The problem is that most of the budget will be spent on one-time expenditures without any contribution to the advancement of the economy. Welfare budgets aimed at promoting public health and curbing unemployment will reach a whopping 200 trillion won next year. It would be much better if the money was spent taking care of the vulnerable class, overcoming our alarmingly low birthrate and creating jobs for the elderly. But the Moon Jae-in administration wants to spend money on creating 1.03 million public jobs — a 10 percent increase from this year — for senior citizens. The government is putting 21.3 trillion won into so-called Korean New Deal projects to help foster digital and green economies along with ratcheting up our social safety net. The colossal projects are already under fire for being replicas of earlier government projects. Besides, the projects have a plethora of loopholes and some are just plain wacky- sounding. These are far from what the Moon administration touted as … [Read more...] about Stop the spending

20,000 migrant Lao workers register with Thai authorities
VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): Improved cooperation between Lao and Thai labour authorities has enabled Thailand’s labour ministry to register almost 20,000 undocumented Lao migrant workers. Lao nationals working in Thailand have encountered difficulties in getting information about proper registration with Thai authorities because of the Covid-19 outbreak, which has slowed their registration on the Thai government’s books, labour officials say. However, Lao labour authorities expect the registration process to move at a faster pace following an employment cooperation agreement between the two countries. Over the next month, labour authorities in both Laos and Thailand will do more to register and provide assistance to Lao workers in Thailand who do not have legal documentation, following an announcement on the matter by the Prime Minister’s Office. Officials from Laos’ Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare plan to go to Thailand to help register and formalise … [Read more...] about 20,000 migrant Lao workers register with Thai authorities

PUTRAJAYA: The move to halt chicken exports from June 1 will be reviewed once the country's supply becomes stable, says Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (pic). He said a total of 3.6 million birds were exported to several countries every month including Singapore, Vietnam and Pakistan and the government's intervention as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Monday (May 23), was to ensure domestic supply was adequate. Ronald explained that the country was currently facing a shortage of chicken due to several factors as informed by the industry, including disease and weight that did not meet standards to be marketed. "The poultry and egg industry is an industry that should meet the needs of the country because we have achieved 100% in self-sufficiency level (SSL) for poultry and eggs (previously)," he told the media at the ministry's Aidilfitri open house here on Tuesday (May 24). S.F. schools could get $70 million per year more if voters back proposal
San Francisco voters may decide this fall whether to set aside $70 million per year to finance new programs in the city school system that backers hope will boost enrollment and improve the quality of public pre-K-12 education. Supervisor Hillary Ronen and five colleagues on the Board of Supervisors are proposing a City Charter amendment that would fund public school initiatives designed to enhance academic achievement or student wellness. Those could include accelerated math and literacy curriculum as well as academic specialists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, after-school programs, athletic or artistic offerings, and more. The 25-year fund would use money from existing state property taxes — voters would not be asked to raise any new public dollars if the charter amendment makes it to the November ballot. The proposal is also an effort to shore up the San Francisco Unified School District after it was battered by the pandemic and a series of controversies that … [Read more...] about S.F. schools could get $70 million per year more if voters back proposal

Why Amber Heard was compared to Zendaya, Gal Gadot during trial
Amber Heard was compared to a number of other movie stars including Zendaya and Gal Gadot during Monday's court proceedings as an entertainment industry consultant testified about her career trajectory. The multimillion-dollar defamation trial between Heard and her ex-husband Johnny Depp resumed on Monday in what is the final week in the Fairfax, Virginia, court room. Ana De Armas, Jason Momoa and Chris Pine were also mentioned in the list of celebrity names by an expert witness and entertainment industry consultant Kathryn Arnold. Arnold testified that Heard's career success would be on par with those big names if it weren't for Depp's alleged "smear campaign" against her. "When you look at the time frame of when the Waldman statements came out, and you look at what was going on with Ms. Heard's career prior to the statement and what happened after the statement, it's very clear to make that correlation," Arnold said. What happened to Johnny Depp’s finger? Experts can’t agree
A pivotal dispute emerging from the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial is the case of the severed finger. Depp has accused Heard of cutting off the tip of his finger during a heated argument they had in Australia in August 2015. Heard, her legal team and now expert witnesses have disputed Depp's account of events. Depp and Heard are currently embroiled in a $50 million defamation suit after Depp's team argued Heard's 2018 op-ed resulted in loss of career earnings for the actor. Depp was never mentioned by name in the article in which Heard stated she was a survivor of domestic violence, but his team argue the insinuation was damaging enough. The claim has become a big part of the trial amongst the public too. An Australian bakery sent a box of cakes shaped like a hand and a Smirnoff vodka bottle to Heard. Depp alleges that the injury occurred when Heard threw a bottle at him. But what actually happened to Johnny Depp's finger? Newsweek have compiled the evidence we've … [Read more...] about What happened to Johnny Depp’s finger? Experts can’t agree
Hope amid challenges for acid attack survivors
“The acid attack ruined my life,” said Nasreen, who was abandoned by her parents in 2007 after her husband, against whom she had filed a divorce case for domestic violence, attacked her. Life changed for the better when the Delhi High Court employed Nasreen and she could afford a roof over her head. In 2017, the Delhi High Court provided contractual employment to five acid attack survivors and a transgender person after their struggles were highlighted before the then Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal. The Delhi State Legal Services Authority had proposed to explore job opportunities for acid attack survivors and the court’s decision enabled six women to live with dignity.
