Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker of Georgia quoted a Bible verse when recently asked about past domestic violence allegations. Walker, a Republican endorsed by former President Donald Trump , was asked by Atlanta-based magazine Rolling Out about domestic abuse allegations that occurred between 2001 and 2008. He never answered the question and instead attacked his opponent, incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock . "You know, he without sin cast the first stone," Walker said , quoting Jesus in John 8:7. "Does my opponent believe in redemption, being a pastor? That's what's so funny. "And I say that because I'm not gonna get into what happened with him in his past. I want him to do—what's going on with his policy. He's talking about something I was a part of over 15 years ago, maybe even longer." The allegations were initially brought up in Walker's primary race against Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black in a March 16 campaign ad posted online, … [Read more...] about Herschel Walker quotes Bible verse to dismiss question about domestic abuse
A 15-year-old girl from California was shot and killed by police after fleeing from her kidnapper , according to authorities. Earlier this week, the Fontana Police Department in California issued a press release about the abduction of 15-year-old Savanna Graziano. Police said she had been taken by her 45-year-old father Anthony John Graziano. The father was also a suspect in the shooting and killing of his wife and Savanna Graziano's mother, Tracy Martinez, on Monday. Savanna Graziano was wearing body armor when she was shot by police, and authorities have launched a wider investigation into whether she was also armed when she raced towards police. "On Monday, September 26, 2022, at approximately 7:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to a shots fired call in the area of Cypress Avenue/Mallory Drive," the press release read. "Officers arrived and found an adult female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The morning that more than 25 percent of Italian voters decided they wanted a woman to lead them, that woman— Giorgia Meloni —posted a video on her social media holding two melons more or less in front of her breasts with a wink and a smirk. That the 45-year-old Roman native, whose last name in Italian indeed means “melons,” chose to start election day with that photo was nowhere near the most controversial part of her campaign . Nor is the fact that her party has shortened the timeframe for legal abortion—which she refers to as a tragedy—from nine weeks to seven weeks in the Italian regions they govern. Or that she seeks to re-examine the legality of same-sex unions and same-sex adoption. It could be argued that her biggest affront is joining a coalition with Silvio Berlusconi, who has singlehandedly done more to hurt any hope of equality and empowerment in Italy than any other person. As prime minister, he once pleaded with foreign firms to invest in Italy because the … [Read more...] about The Most Powerful Woman in the European Union Is Anti-Woman
Many Republicans in Congress agree with Representative Matt Gaetz that the Second Amendment “is about maintaining within the citizenry the ability to maintain an armed rebellion against the government, if that becomes necessary.” This purported right to overthrow the government means that the people must enjoy access to weapons that are wholly unnecessary for hunting or self-defense, such as military-style assault weapons. As Representative Chip Roy, a Republican, argues, the Second Amendment was “designed purposefully to empower the people to resist the force of tyranny used against them.” Some champions of this insurrectionist theory of the Second Amendment seem to glorify violence against public officials. Two weeks before the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection overran the U.S. Capitol, Representative Lauren Boebert declared that the Second Amendment “has nothing to do with hunting, unless you’re talking about hunting tyrants, maybe.” Statements such as these were irresponsible … [Read more...] about The Second Amendment Gives No Comfort to Insurrectionists
More from our inbox: Women, ‘Stay Loud’ A Childhood Home Get a Living Will To the Editor: Re “ Democracy Challenged ,” by David Leonhardt (front page, Sept. 18): Your excellent, and frightening, article suggests that our democracy is facing two simultaneous crises: Republicans who refuse to accept defeat in an election, and a growing disconnect between political power and public opinion. But there is a third, equally serious danger. While it is critical to get rid of dark money (reversing Citizens United) and gerrymandering, and to set term limits on the Supreme Court, an equally significant element of the current nightmare is coming from social media. Indeed, the degree to which social media has not only ginned up but actually created some or much of the current social-cultural-political zeitgeist is not well understood or acknowledged. For all the positives it provides, social media has become a cancer on society — one that has metastasized and … [Read more...] about Will U.S. Democracy Survive the Threats?
