A man accused of being abusive has revealed his last conversation with his ex-partner claiming they were "very much in love" when she was found dead the next day. An inquest into the death of Jessica Laverack, known as Jessie, heard how she had moved to East Yorkshire from Rotherham in 2017 to escape her ex-boyfriend Patrick Walsh. But Mr Walsh, who described Jessie as his fiancé, is said to have found out where she lived and sent her a letter before turning up at her home unannounced, Hull Live reports. Jessie, 34, was found dead at her home in Beverley on February 2, 2018, with a handwritten note which read "I'm sober and will stay that way. I also know I'm scared of you and that's so hard to say out loud and tell you that." The inquest at Hull Coroners Court heard how police had charged Mr Walsh with assaulting Jessie, but the case was dropped at court when she withdrew the claim. Jessie Laverak had moved to Beverley to escape her ex, but he denies these allegations … [Read more...] about Man accused of being abusive shares last conversation with partner day before she died

Govt urged to implement stockpile policy to address food crisis
PETALING JAYA: The government should consider implementing the stockpile policy and restructure various ministries to better address supply shortages, says Rafizi Ramli (pic). The PKR deputy president said the stockpile policy, which has proven to be successful during the 1970s food crisis, empowers the government to purchase and store food supplies and basic necessities including petrol and diesel, in bulk. "The stored items then can be injected into the market when there is a supply disruption that causes a sharp price increase. "The stockpile can help to reduce the impact of supply shortages similar to what we are experiencing recently, and allow the government to control the increase of price for food items and basic necessities," he said in a statement. Rafizi said the government can build up the stockpile using various fiscal instruments such as hedging and purchasing future contracts. The government, Rafizi said would also need to establish an independent "National … [Read more...] about Govt urged to implement stockpile policy to address food crisis
Fifth of food-related greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation: Scientists
A fifth of food-related greenhouse gas emissions come from transporting it across the planet, as scientists say we should eat local. Researchers in Australia say transporting food around the world causes three gigatons of gasses to be emitted every year, and 6 six percent of all greenhouse gas emissions are food emissions linked to transport. The amount of food emissions linked to trucks, ships, trains, and planes is seven times higher than previously believed. It also far exceeds the transport emissions of other commodities - for example, transport accounts for only 7 percent of industry and utilities emissions. Food transport emissions are almost half as high as direct emissions from road vehicles. Fruit and vegetables make up a third of food transport emissions because they need twice the amount of emissions to transport than to produce. The researchers say their findings mean people must make it a priority to eat locally-grown produce. For the new study, the team … [Read more...] about Fifth of food-related greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation: Scientists
More Than 100 Executed In Iran In Between January And March: UN
Iran executed more than 100 people in the first three months of 2022, continuing a worrying upward trend, according to a report by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that was presented Tuesday. Speaking before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN deputy human rights chief Nada Al-Nashif presented Guterres’ latest report on Iran, decrying that executions in the country were on the rise. “While 260 individuals were executed in 2020, at least 310 individuals were executed in 2021, including at least 14 women,” she said, adding that the trend had continued this year. Between January 1 and March 20, she said, “at least 105 people were executed,” many of whom belonged ing to minority groups.” Guterres’s report had noted with deep concern the increase of executions for lesser crimes, including for drug-related offences, Nashif said. “The death penalty continues to be imposed on the basis of charges not amounting to ‘most serious crimes’, and in ways incompatible with fair … [Read more...] about More Than 100 Executed In Iran In Between January And March: UN
Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates
Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. French lawmakers to propose bill inscribing abortion rights in constitution
PARIS — A group of lawmakers belonging to French President Emmanuel Macron’s party will propose a bill to inscribe abortion rights into the country’s constitution, according to the statement by two members of parliament on Saturday. The move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 50-year-old ruling and stripped women’s constitutional protections for abortion. The right to abortion in France is already inscribed in a 1975 law relating to the voluntary termination of pregnancy within the legal framework that decriminalized abortion. A constitutional law will cement abortion rights for future generations, said Marie-Pierre Rixain, a member of parliament and of Macron’s The Republic on the Move party. “What happened elsewhere must not happen in France,” Rixain said. The bill will include a provision that would make it “impossible to deprive a person of the right to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy,” according to the statement, released by two members of the … [Read more...] about French lawmakers to propose bill inscribing abortion rights in constitution
