LOS ANGELES — Authorities say the 19-year-old gunman who opened fire on a California food festival died from his own bullet, not those of police. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's office said Friday that Santino William Legan shot himself in the mouth on Sunday at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. That contradicted earlier accounts that police killed him. Legan's assault with an AK-47-style semi-automatic rifle killed three people — including two children — and injured 13 others. Authorities are still trying to determine his motive. Gilroy's police chief had said three officers killed Legan within a minute of his attack, saving additional lives. World Germany A wine festival suffered an agonizing interruption when a swarm of hornets descended on the crowd, stinging and hospitalizing over a dozen attendees. The incident took place in the southwestern German town of Weingarten at the Wein-Wander-Tag event in the region’s vineyards near the Swiss border, where wine lovers had gathered to mark the final few weeks of summer over the weekend. Emerging from a hollowed cherry tree, hornets attacked the group, injuring 18 people. Two rapid response units arrived on the scene shortly after. Thirteen people were admitted to hospital for treatment. No children were hurt in the incident and none of those hospitalized are suffering from life-threatening injuries. A pest control expert ensured the nest was properly moved to a safe location, public broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported. World A paddleboarder was knocked into the ocean when a leaping dolphin parted from its pod and struck him in mid air. Andrew Hill, a stand-up paddleboarder, was heading out to sea in Gracetown, Western Australia, when the incident happened. A pod of dolphins caught a wave and were heading towards Hill. “Eight or nine of them decided to catch that wave and surf straight at me,” he told Seven News. And, as footage which has gone viral across social media shows, one decided to leap out of the water and sends Hill flying off his board.
