Jack Brewer: Cyborg Generation of Fatherless Kids Raised by Big Tech
Fatherless children in the modern era are like a “cyborg generation” and are uniquely vulnerable to moral corruption pushed via mobile digital devices, former NFL player Jack Brewer warned on Tuesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily podcast with host Alex Marlow. Brewer, chairman of the America First Policy Institute’s (AFPI) Center for Opportunity Now, highlighted the vulnerability of children raised without fathers to dysfunction and tragedy, including violent criminality, educational underachievement, and suicide. “This is the cancer of America, unfortunately, and I say that as a true American patriot who loves this country,” he said. “I’m a great-grandson of sharecroppers, and this country has allowed me to live a life that 99.9 percent of the world would never get opportunity to, and I praise God for that. The Bible teaches us that we should defend the fatherless … [and we must] serve the fatherless and the widows and the troubled, or he will hit the earth … [Read more...] about Jack Brewer: Cyborg Generation of Fatherless Kids Raised by Big Tech

The Viral Online Challenge Is Never Coming Back
Ten years ago this month, the Harvard men’s baseball team put a video on YouTube in which they danced and lip-synched to Carly Rae Jepsen’s No. 1 hit, “Call Me Maybe.” It was funny because, well, you know: They were muscle-y boys with serious jawlines, and they were doing choreography that involved punching the ceiling of a van; this was back when a lot of people thought that pop songs were really stupid and for girls. So the video got really popular. Then other groups of people started to film themselves doing their own versions of the song: college students in Idaho; the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders ; the U.S. Olympic swim team . Maybe you, too, were inclined to dance and lip-synch to Carly Rae Jepsen’s No. 1 hit, “Call Me Maybe,” with your friends and post it to the internet. This is how one of the first super-viral “challenges” on social media was born. Planking, where people filmed or photographed themselves lying flat—like a plank—in unexpected places, had already … [Read more...] about The Viral Online Challenge Is Never Coming Back
An ER Doctor’s ‘Third Way’ Approach to the Gun Crisis
Nearly 15 years ago, a young man who had shot himself in the head with his father’s gun was wheeled into the emergency room where Megan Ranney worked. Despite her team’s best efforts, the patient died. “It was the first firearm suicide I’d ever taken care of,” Ranney, an emergency physician and public-health expert in Rhode Island, told me. In the days after, Ranney found herself wondering about the circumstances that had landed that boy in her hospital. What had made that gun so easily accessible? Why had he reached for it? What had failed to stay his hand? In the decade-plus since, many, many more firearm injuries have crossed her path—“truly, I can’t even count the number of folks I’ve taken care of who have been shot,” she said. Each year, guns kill tens of thousands of people in the United States; on Tuesday, an 18-year-old gunman added at least 21 more to 2022’s horrific tally, when he entered an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and opened fire in a fourth-grade … [Read more...] about An ER Doctor’s ‘Third Way’ Approach to the Gun Crisis

This Thai coffin maker kickflips caskets into skateboards
From a final resting place for the dead to a gnarly way to land a trick, a Thai coffin-maker is affixing Buddhist emblems to the dismantled walls of his caskets, and transforming them into skateboards. As the popularity of board sports exploded in Thailand, and the price of a skateboard skyrocketed, Anusorn Yungyearn decided to breathe new life into some of the wooden caskets he had lying around his Bangkok workshop. "I want to give kids who don't really have much chance in life an opportunity to skate," said the 30-year-old. "I also don't want them to ask their parents to buy one for them since the cost of it is really high." In the past year, hordes of young Thais have taken up skateboarding and surf-skating – likely a consequence of most social spaces like bars and gyms being closed for months at a time because of pandemic restrictions. Today, bands of young skaters can be seen cruising through Bangkok's historic quarter and … [Read more...] about This Thai coffin maker kickflips caskets into skateboards
Texas school district bans dresses, skirts to promote ‘workforce skills’
When a North Texas school district returns from summer break in August, many of its students might find themselves looking for new wardrobes knowing that they will be unable to wear dresses, skirts or hoodies as part of the district's effort to promote professionalism. The Forney Independent School District announced this week that it was implementing the new dress code to help improve the children's "future workforce skills" for the 2022-23 academic year. All hoodies, as well as hooded jackets and coats, will be prohibited for all the roughly 15,000 students inside any of FISD's 18 schools. Dresses, skirts and skorts are now allowed only for kids in prekindergarten through the fourth grade in an effort the district says will "help prepare students for a safe and successful future." "The use of a school dress code is established to improve student self-esteem, bridge socio-economic differences among students, and promote positive behavior, thereby enhancing school safety and … [Read more...] about Texas school district bans dresses, skirts to promote ‘workforce skills’
