The White House’s response to last week’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade , which in 1973 established a constitutional right to abortion, once again has exposed the tension between the conciliatory instincts President Joe Biden developed during his long career in Washington, D.C., and the ferocity of the modern combat between the two major political parties. An array of frustrated Democrats this week openly complained that Biden and other administration officials had failed, in their initial reactions to the ruling, to reflect the urgency and anguish of abortion-rights supporters. Although Biden quickly denounced the decision last week, he has avoided any broader condemnation of the Court’s direction or legitimacy and dismissed proposals for changing its structure. Biden’s aides have stressed the limits of what the executive branch can do to mitigate the impact of the ruling. Most notably, Biden initially refused to endorse rolling back the Senate filibuster in … [Read more...] about Is Biden a Man Out of Time?

Chappie Stars Discuss Robot Fights, Animated Butlers and Mullets
At a press conference for media who had just watched a screening of Neill Blomkamp's movie Chappie , some bizarre questions were traded on what would make an ideal robot, the art of creating the most stereotypical Australian character, and which comic book hero or robot would win in a fight. Why do themes like artificial intelligence keep resonating with humanity as we advance? Neill Blomkamp: My point of view on AI, which ties into the nature for humans constantly looking into the reasons for why we exist and why consciousness exists, changed during the making of Chappie . I'm not actually completely sure that humans are going to be capable of giving birth to AI in the way that films fictionalize it. You have weak artificial intelligence which is like a robot or computer system that follows a list of protocols that are yes, no answers that can be as complex as you want. And then you have strong AI, which is basically like a human, something that can think up a thought … [Read more...] about Chappie Stars Discuss Robot Fights, Animated Butlers and Mullets
Director Neill Blomkamp Wants to Break Your Heart With Sweet, Gun-Toting Robot Chappie
Culture Films Robots Hugh Jackman Watching Chappie , the latest sci-fi-film-with-a-moral by South African director Neill Blomkamp, will be a disorienting experience for some viewers. Superhero Hugh Jackman stomps through scenes as a baddie with cargo shorts, a thick Australian accent and a thicker mullet. South African rap-hip-hop band Die Antwoord play musicians-gangsters. And the film's title character is an eerily life-like robot who makes E.T. look like a hardass. Bring on the weird. But Chappie also touches on a few issues that give it an air of seriousness, including crime, automated warfare, police brutality and artificial intelligence. Beneath the film's explosive visual effects, comic elements and frenetic pace, lies a disillusionment with how cruel humanity can be. As Blomkamp puts it, are robots "capable of being more human than the humans around them?" Chappie , which opens in theaters March 6, depicts a dystopian Johannesburg driven to desperation … [Read more...] about Director Neill Blomkamp Wants to Break Your Heart With Sweet, Gun-Toting Robot Chappie

ICE imposters are defrauding the frightened U.S. families of detainees
This story is co-published with Capital & Main On April 5, Mariana was at her usual spot on a Miami sidewalk selling hot dogs and grilled corn when her phone rang. She did not recognize the 1-800 number, and the caller said he was an Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) official named Marcos Cruz. He knew Mariana's name, as well as the names of two of her nephews, brothers who had fled Nicaragua. Cruz knew they were being held at the Stewart Detention Center in rural Georgia. He said that a judge had granted her nephews a bond of $3,900. If she paid it, they would be set free the following day. The call was an answer to her prayers. Mariana had agonized over the fate of her nephews since they had arrived at the U.S. border seeking asylum. They had left Nicaragua fearing persecution for participating in protests and marches against Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, a fear that escalated after a relative was murdered and the nephews learned their names were on a … [Read more...] about ICE imposters are defrauding the frightened U.S. families of detainees
Machine Gun Kelly calls Eminem beef a “battle between past and future”
Cleveland-based rapper Machine Gun Kelly continues to drag Eminem after debuting his diss track, "Rap Devil," on Monday. As he made a stop Thursday on his The M A N I A Tour with Fall Out Boy in Eminem's home state of Michigan, Kelly continued the feud with his nemesis. "This is not a battle between Michigan and Ohio," Kelly said before performing "Rap Devil" at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "This is a battle between the past and the motherf***ing future!" Kelly's beef with Eminem first surfaced in 2012. At the time, the "Bad Things" rapper tweeted about his thoughts on the "Love The Way You Lie" artist's then-teenage daughter, Hailie Scott. Kelly suggested Scott was "hot as f***," and Eminem wasn't amused. Flashing forward to 2018, Eminem decided to reignite his drama with Kelly on his newly released Kamikaze album. On "Not Alike," Eminem called out Kelly for his inappropriate comments about his daughter. "He wants to keep up his tough demeanor / So he … [Read more...] about Machine Gun Kelly calls Eminem beef a “battle between past and future”

The breakdown of Prince William and Prince Harry's relationship has played out very publicly on the world's stage following constant comments made about the state of their bond. GOP Group Hits Vulnerable Dems on ‘Most Expensive’ July Fourth
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the GOP’s main campaign arm, released a new series of digital ads hitting 25 vulnerable Democrats for the negative impact inflation has had on Americans’ holiday plans. The NRCC’s ads are a continuation of its strategy from last year’s Fourth of July when they initially highlighted the impact Democrats had on inflation, affecting the price of goods and travel plans in 2021. This year’s ad emphasizes that “last year was the most expensive Fourth of July, ever” and that “this year it’s even worse.” It showed that buns are up in price nine percent since last year, in addition to burgers being up 14 percent, propane being up 28 percent, and gas being up 49 percent. “Democrats’ harmful economic policies are making everything more expensive, and there’s no end in sight,” the ad stated. The NRCC Chairman, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), said, “Democrats promised they’d get record inflation under control, but prices have only gone … [Read more...] about GOP Group Hits Vulnerable Dems on ‘Most Expensive’ July Fourth
