I dug for ‘The Secret’ buried treasure in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and it broke my heart

May 24, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

Just a few feet from the morning traffic on Fulton Drive, I drove a sharp metal probing rod 3 feet into the soil of Golden Gate Park ... and hit something. I reached for my shovel and excavated the flower bed in search of an ornate plexiglass box that was rumored to be buried in the park 40 years ago. Dirt accumulated under my fingernails as I dug deeper and deeper, hoping this would be the most exciting day of my life. My hunt began over a year ago when a stranger from Oklahoma named Larry Gladd sent me an email with the subject line “Buried Treasure.” To the dismay of SFGATE’s IT department, I opened it, and Gladd shared his theory about a book called “The Secret.” Published in 1982 by Byron Preiss and illustrated by John Jude Palencar, “The Secret” looks like the type of fantasy novel you might find on the bookshelf of a 13-year-old boy who is not particularly popular. The book features tarot-influenced illustrations and cryptic poems that offer clues to the whereabouts of 12 … [Read more...] about I dug for ‘The Secret’ buried treasure in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and it broke my heart

“I discovered red ‘dots’ on my skin, a day later I was diagnosed with a rare cancer”

May 24, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

I want to be a dentist in the future, so in late 2021 I was at college in Florida doing pre-dental courses. I was balancing a lot because I was also on the basketball team and often had practice right after class. Originally, I was going to study closer to home, in Iowa, so I was juggling a lot with a new state and new friends. I hadn't been doing a good job of time management, so I was not getting much sleep and I was feeling run down but I wasn't really thinking anything of it. I had swollen lymph nodes and a little bit of a cold that I couldn't get over and I was getting easily bruised, but I'm a basketball player, so again, so I didn't think much of it. What happened next is kind of crazy; I really think it was God. I had been bruised and feeling fatigued for weeks, and in early November, my sister and brother-in-law came to Florida to visit me and watch my first home basketball game. We went out to dinner on Thursday November 11, after practice, and that's when I noticed the … [Read more...] about “I discovered red ‘dots’ on my skin, a day later I was diagnosed with a rare cancer”

The Sue Gray report should bring Boris Johnson’s administration to an end

May 24, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

On the eve of publication of the long-awaited Sue Gray report on Downing Street parties, the historian Peter Hennessy has described current British political standards as being a “bonfire of decencies”.  A system of government which ultimately rests on the willingness of “good chaps” to “do the decent thing” is going up in flames. The match which is lighting the fire is seeing that egregious misdemeanours at the very top of government can be publicly identified and evidenced but then go unpunished, while the offender-in-chief “moves on”. If the public’s desire for a blood sacrifice is required, some official or other can be offered up . The public seemingly understands the drill and “moves on” too. There is, after all, a cost of living crisis. Though it seems petty and obsessive to go on about the details of Partygate , the issue matters (as does the wider conduct of the prime minister). Serious damage has been done to the British system of democratic government … [Read more...] about The Sue Gray report should bring Boris Johnson’s administration to an end

You Can Get a Quarantine Haircut if You Know the Right Barber—and Have the Money

April 24, 2020 by www.thedailybeast.com

As the new socially distant reality drags on, hair has become a major topic of conversation on Zoom dates and phone calls. Videos of at-home buzz cuts are inescapable on social media. Celebrities from Ricky Martin to Elle Fanning have dyed their hair pink. Anderson Cooper revealed on air that he accidentally gave himself a bald spot. But not everyone’s feeling the DIY spirit. As cabin fever—and split ends—reach an apex, barbers have begun to offer house calls for those unwilling to pick up scissors themselves. Last month, The Washington Post described a growing “black market of hairstylists” ready to “risk it all” with such visits, but those who spoke to The Daily Beast are not trying to hide their services. Many have taken to advertise on Craigslist and Instagram, charging a bit more than usual for appointments. It helps them keep food on the table and rent paid as salons remain shuttered. “As a professional barber [before coronavirus], I took the risk of getting … [Read more...] about You Can Get a Quarantine Haircut if You Know the Right Barber—and Have the Money

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s latest California tweet has all sorts of problems

May 24, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is no stranger to tweeting inflammatory things about California, and her latest attempt to skewer the state is full of both factual and logical errors. Trying to make a point about a national baby formula shortage , as well as high-profile California shoplifting incidents, Greene tweeted a picture of a can of baby formula with a security sensor taped on it. "If this was California you could steal baby formula up to $900 worth with no consequences, but in Georgia where we respect law and order, there are now security censors [ sic ] on the very few cans of baby formula that can be found." she wrote . NEET PG 2022: Students Say Exam Was ‘Easy’, Lost Revision Time in ‘Fiasco’

May 21, 2022 by www.news18.com

After months long protest, the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test postgraduate (NEET-PG) 2022 was conducted today, May 21. According to some students on social media platforms, the exam was easy for those who had prepared, while for others it was lengthy. While some students felt that they could have revised more, others said the questions were standard adding that a lot of time was lost in the ‘fiasco’, which could have been used for revision. The exam was held in a single shift from 9 am to 12:30 pm. The exam was conducted amidst protest from students to postpone it. The Supreme Court had rejected the plea of a group of doctors seeking postponement of the postgraduate level medical entrance exam. A large section of medical aspirants had over the past month launched multiple protests stating ‘justice for doctors’ on social media that garnered support from a lot of people including politicians, and student bodies. “A straight-forward exam but there were a few tricky … [Read more...] about NEET PG 2022: Students Say Exam Was ‘Easy’, Lost Revision Time in ‘Fiasco’

While Bernie and Biden fought, Elizabeth Warren shone — and Julian Castro made an obvious bid for VP

September 13, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

The third Democratic debate started and ended with Julian Castro . “I worked under President Obama too!” the former secretary of housing and urban development reminded the crowd, when Joe Biden got a little too carried away with his own record under the popular former Democratic president; later, he made the charge that “Biden wants to take credit for the good things Obama did” while ignoring the bad. “Our problems didn’t start with Trump,” Castro said in his opening statement, “and we won’t solve them by going back to old ideas.” To hammer the point home, he called for an administration of “young, diverse Americans” — and then, an hour or so later, he said directly to Joe Biden, “I’m fulfilling the legacy of Barack Obama and you’re not.” There were audible gasps from the crowd. The man America once knew as Uncle Joe has been leaning on his record as Obama’s VP for a long time, and his opponents have now begun to dismantle that crutch. When he spoke about the … [Read more...] about While Bernie and Biden fought, Elizabeth Warren shone — and Julian Castro made an obvious bid for VP
