The hit series from Spain entitled “Money Heist” tells the story of a well-coordinated hijacking and robbery of a Madrid mint, in which the thieves use the negotiation process for hostage release to buy enough time to print millions worth of unmarked bills for their own use after escape. At one point, the thieves embarrass the police by releasing a recording of a compromised bargaining process involving a politically connected hostage. The fallout weighs heavily upon the lead negotiator. “I care about what my mother and daughter think of me,” she laments to a cynical colleague. He advises, “When this part is over, nobody will remember it…if you finally get them a happy ending, you’ll be the country’s hero.” This fictional Spanish agent’s reminder to see the forest for the trees should not be lost on observers of American politics today: be they fans of President Donald Trump or detractors. A Catalan pro-independence 'estelada' flag flutters as thousands of people participate in a demonstration in Barcelona. Photo: AFP Spain's constitutional court on Wednesday forbade the pro-separatist region of Catalonia from promoting its interests abroad through a foreign policy "secretariat." Madrid wants to rein in the wealthy northeastern region's unilateral drive for independence from the rest of Spain and the court judgment found that only Spanish diplomacy has the right to engage in "foreign affairs". Any attempt by a region to do the same is therefore "unconstitutional and void" as it could lead to "confusion," given foreign policy is the unique preserve of Madrid, the court stated. The court added, nonetheless, that the Catalan regional government may engage in activities abroad if it avoids policy areas where the national government has unique authority. The Catalan administration created its secretariat early last year as it sought support abroad for a referendum on … [Read more...] about Spanish court reins in Catalan foreign policy ambitions
Get the Think newsletter. SUBSCRIBE CIA Director Mike Pompeo, with his hawkish views, skepticism of diplomacy and Islamophobic positions, struck most observers as a shoe-in to replace Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. And, despite a contentious confirmation hearing marred by evasive responses and contradictory statements about Iran, Russia and North Korea, Pompeo’s future appears to be certain. Democrats are skeptical about how his tenure will play out, and that skepticism is warranted. Senator Bob Menendez — the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — strongly opposed Pompeo’s nomination, citing his lack of candor, alarming outlook on human rights and preference for military action over diplomacy. “I believe our nation’s top diplomat must be forthright, and, more critically, his past sentiments do not reflect our nation’s values, and are not acceptable for our nation’s top diplomat,” said Menendez in a … [Read more...] about Democrats are skeptical of Mike Pompeo.
