Starling Marte is going through it. He was placed on the bereavement list, retroactive to May 16, after his grandmother died. Marte has returned to his home in Dominican Republic to be with his family during this difficult time, one that is taking an extra emotional toll on the Mets right fielder. “It was heart wrenching talking to him yesterday,” manager Buck Showalter said on Tuesday. “I don’t think people realize, he’s had a tough go.” Marte’s grandmother took care of him after his mother passed away when he was just 10 years old. To further compound an already unimaginable loss, the two-year death anniversary of his wife, who also died suddenly from a heart attack, is on Wednesday. The Mets have told Marte to take all the time he needs. Technically, placement on the bereavement list can last anywhere from three to seven days, depending on the circumstances, and the number of days cannot be set in advance. As of Tuesday, the Mets were unsure how many games Marte would … [Read more...] about Starling Marte placed on bereavement list; James McCann has hand surgery

76-year-old Russian artist is proud to be voice of protest on Ukraine
Yelena Osipova barely slept ahead of Russia's pomp-filled Victory Day celebrations on May 9. The 76-year-old artist was up late, making placards to protest about the conflict in Ukraine. But the moment she stepped out of her home in Saint Petersburg on her way to demonstrate, two unknown men snatched the work from her and ran off. "It was upsetting. I'd worked half the night and really liked those placards," the white-haired painter told AFP. "It's obvious that it was an organised attack." Indefatigable as ever, within an hour, the tiny, stooped woman, who moves with difficulty, already had a new poster and was heading out again to protest. Osipova is well-known in her home town. She has been called the "conscience of Saint Petersburg," Russia's second city, after two decades spent publicly opposing the rule of President Vladimir Putin. Since the Kremlin's forces rolled into Ukraine, she has also become a symbol of Russians standing up against the conflict. Heartbroken widower pays tribute to murdered PCSO Julia James who ‘couldn’t do enough’
A heartbroken husband has paid tribute to a PCSO who “couldn’t do enough” for others as a “strange, highly sexualised” loner was found guilty of her brutal murder. Speaking outside court, widowed Paul James fought back tears as he spoke of his “amazing” wife Julia who was ambushed in the woods while walking her dog in April 2021. Jurors took just over an hour to convict Callum Wheeler, 22, of bludgeoning the 53-year-old grandmother to death with a 3kg railway jack handle. Mr James described his wife, who worked supporting victims of domestic abuse, as the “funniest person I have ever met”, adding: "She just helped everybody, she just couldn't do enough." In Buffalo, Biden to confront the racism he’s vowed to fight
By CHRIS MEGERIAN WASHINGTON (AP) — When Joe Biden talks about his decision to run against President Donald Trump in 2020, the story always starts with Charlottesville. He says it was the men with torches shouting bigoted slogans that drove him to join what he calls the “battle for the soul of America.” Now Biden is facing the latest deadly manifestation of hatred after a white supremacist targeted Black people with an assault rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and left 10 people dead, the most lethal racist attack since he took office. The president and first lady Jill Biden are to visit the city on Tuesday, where their first stop will be a makeshift memorial outside the supermarket. They’re also expected to meet privately with families of the victims, first responders and local officials before the president delivers public remarks. In a speech at a nearby community center, Biden plans to call for stricter gun laws and urge Americans to reject racism and embrace … [Read more...] about In Buffalo, Biden to confront the racism he’s vowed to fight
Terrifying sighting of huge shark sparks debate about if megalodons still exist
A giant shark caught on camera scouring the bottom of the Mariana Trench has sparked debate about if megalodons still exist. The huge predator can be seen swimming over what seems to be an abandoned shark cage. The giant prehistoric shark, called a megalodon, ate everything in its path and was said to lurk in the Earth’s deepest oceans. Some believe this footage, which has remerged after being filmed in 2018, is proof the sharks are not extinct and it has sparked a debate online. One wrote: “I think they went deeper into the seas like the giant squid which is why we never see them." Another added: “Our oceans are huge and there are vast areas that are still unexplored. I wouldn't be surprised if there are megs outs there.” The shark was seen in the Mariana Trench Get the news you want straight to your inbox.
