The problem is that most of the budget will be spent on one-time expenditures without any contribution to the advancement of the economy. Welfare budgets aimed at promoting public health and curbing unemployment will reach a whopping 200 trillion won next year. It would be much better if the money was spent taking care of the vulnerable class, overcoming our alarmingly low birthrate and creating jobs for the elderly. But the Moon Jae-in administration wants to spend money on creating 1.03 million public jobs — a 10 percent increase from this year — for senior citizens. The government is putting 21.3 trillion won into so-called Korean New Deal projects to help foster digital and green economies along with ratcheting up our social safety net. The colossal projects are already under fire for being replicas of earlier government projects. Besides, the projects have a plethora of loopholes and some are just plain wacky- sounding. These are far from what the Moon administration touted as … [Read more...] about Stop the spending

Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia has opened a long-anticipated new phase of the war in Ukraine , launching its eastern offensive in a bid to seize the country's industrial heartland. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the move Tuesday , saying the Kremlin's goal was to achieve the “full liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” which together make up the Donbas region. The full-scale assault on Ukraine's east came as the last fighters in Mariupol, the besieged port city that is crucial to Moscow's goals, continued to hold out despite a new Russian deadline to surrender. It also followed Russian strikes across the country, hitting supply lines and military infrastructure and killing at least seven people in the western city of Lviv . The United States is expected to announce another package of military aid, which is expected to be similar in size to the $800 million one the administration … [Read more...] about Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
Chicken export ban to be reviewed once domestic supply stabilises, says Kiandee
PUTRAJAYA: The move to halt chicken exports from June 1 will be reviewed once the country's supply becomes stable, says Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (pic). He said a total of 3.6 million birds were exported to several countries every month including Singapore, Vietnam and Pakistan and the government's intervention as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Monday (May 23), was to ensure domestic supply was adequate. Ronald explained that the country was currently facing a shortage of chicken due to several factors as informed by the industry, including disease and weight that did not meet standards to be marketed. "The poultry and egg industry is an industry that should meet the needs of the country because we have achieved 100% in self-sufficiency level (SSL) for poultry and eggs (previously)," he told the media at the ministry's Aidilfitri open house here on Tuesday (May 24). He said the government had intervened … [Read more...] about Chicken export ban to be reviewed once domestic supply stabilises, says Kiandee

EPA plan would force Utah, Wyoming and California to cut harmful air emissions drifting into Colorado
The Environmental Protection Agency for the first time is proposing a measure that would force four Western states to reduce their harmful emissions because of the impact they’re having on air quality in neighboring states — including Colorado. If approved, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada would be required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and industrial manufacturing sites, while California would need to cut emissions from certain industries. National modeling shows those states’ emissions are blowing across the West and into metro Denver, adding to the already bad ground-level ozone pollution. The move would help Colorado because the EPA recently announced plans to downgrade Denver and the northern Front Range to “severe” violators of federal ozone standards, which would mean more stringent emissions limits for industries and higher gas prices for motorists. The EPA unveiled earlier this month its plan to include 26 states in an update of the agency’s … [Read more...] about EPA plan would force Utah, Wyoming and California to cut harmful air emissions drifting into Colorado
Henry Kissinger: Ukraine should give up territory to Russia to reach peace
Former secretary of state Henry Kissinger has said Ukraine should accept giving up part of its territory to reach a peace deal with Russia, and end the now three-month-long war immediately. Talking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Monday, 98-year-old Kissinger said that failing to restart negotiations with Russia and continuing to antagonize Moscow could have disastrous consequences for Europe's stability in the long term. "Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome," he said. "Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante. Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself." Kissinger, who served under the administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford in the 1970s, warned against dragging on the war, and pressed for negotiations. The former secretary of state said Russia has … [Read more...] about Henry Kissinger: Ukraine should give up territory to Russia to reach peace

Korea raises its guard a bit for monkeypox
A traveler talks with a quarantine official at the arrival area of Incheon International Airport on Tuesday. Health authorities said they will boost monitoring to prevent monkeypox cases coming in. [YONHAP] Korea raised its guard at its borders to catch monkeypox cases amid a rise in cases in other countries. “All travelers are required to check their temperatures and fill in a health questionnaire when entering Korea,” the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said in a press release on Tuesday. The KDCA asked arrivals to contact it if symptoms appear within three weeks of arrival, which include fever above 38 degrees, shivering, headache, swollen lymph glands, and a rash that usually starts on the face and then extends to other parts of the body including the genitals. Health authorities stressed that overseas travelers should comply with basic health protocols, such as mask wearing and hand washing. When visiting destinations with monkeypox cases, travelers … [Read more...] about Korea raises its guard a bit for monkeypox
Man banned from keeping animals after cramming puppies into cattle trailer
A man has been banned from keeping animals for two years after dogs were found crammed into a livestock trailer at Appleby Horse Fair. When RSPCA inspectors examined the trailer, they found some of the dogs and puppies, who were confined in cages, were suffering from parasite infections. A German shepherd puppy was in such poor health that sadly a vet decided she needed to be put to sleep to end her suffering. The RSPCA initially took 14 dogs from the trailer into its care, and prosecuted two people for neglecting 10 of the animals. John Lowther, of Kidacre Park, Leeds and Marina Lowther, of Westway, Farsley, Leeds, both pleaded guilty to four charges of causing unnecessary suffering to animals under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 when they appeared for sentencing at Bradford Magistrates’ Court on May 10.
