Wordle is the viral word game open to all to solve for just one day on The New York Times website. Wordle's aim is very basic, with the puzzle demanding participants figure out a five-letter word in six guesses or fewer. Working out how to give oneself an edge in Wordle is easy; requiring people to simply focus only on the tiles' color while guessing the solution. When a tile turns gray following each guess, it suggests this particular letter won't feature anywhere in the answer. If the specific letter is included in the word, but in another position, the tile turns a mellow yellow color. But if you strike gold and the tile turns green, you can rest easy in the knowledge the letter is not only included in the word, but it's also sitting in exactly the right place. Wordle players have every right to feel smug should they arrive at the correct answer, and the viral game caters to this sense of achievement by tracking people's vital statistics. The puzzle not … [Read more...] about Today’s Wordle word of the day: #338 answer and hints – May 23

New permanent nucleus created for Rajasthan’s folk artistes
Having emerged as a permanent and well-constructed nucleus for the famed folk artistes of western Rajasthan, a new centre situated deep in the Thar desert is helping the Langa-Manganiyar and other singers in honing the skills of their youngsters. The centre has also provided a permanent platform to the artistes from about 50 villages in Barmer and Jaisalmer districts. The new campus of Dharohar Lok Kala and Gramin Vikas Sansthan, situated over two-bigha land in Sheo village, 55 km from Barmer, will function as sanctum sanctorum of the vocal and instrumental ensemble of Langas and Manganiyars and help save their rapidly disappearing narrative traditions. The initiative has been taken by two brothers belonging to the Manganiyar community. While three business houses extended financial support to Bhutte Khan and Bhungar Khan for constructing rooms, toilets, training hall and a vast open air performing dais at the centre, a two-day festival titled “Singing Sands” was organised there … [Read more...] about New permanent nucleus created for Rajasthan’s folk artistes
A question of K-pop
LEE YOUNG-HEE The author is a Tokyo correspondent of the JoongAng Ilbo. “KCON 2022 Premier in Tokyo” held at the “Makuhari Messe” in Event 32 Hall near Tokyo on May 14 and 15 was a unique event. The event, hosted by Korean company CJ ENM, was to introduce Korean culture to Japan, but interestingly, none of the participating artists were Korean. The 6 idol teams that appeared in the concert and fan meeting were all formed through Mnet’s audition program “Produce 101 Japan,” season 1 and 2 winners JO1 and INI and 4 teams made of participants who did not make the final round. All the members were Japanese, and only INI had one Chinese member. The reporters who came to cover the event were in agony. Should I refer to these teams as “K-pop idols” or “J-pop idols”? Watching the performance, I felt more confused. They presented hip-hop-based strong beats, perfectly synced choreography and typical Korean idol music and performances, but the lyrics were in Japanese. It is quite … [Read more...] about A question of K-pop

This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia began a new offensive Monday in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Russia in recent days had been building up its forces for an attack on what is Ukraine’s industrial heartland, where Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Kyiv for eight years. “We will not give away anything Ukrainian, and we do not need anything that is not ours,” Zelenskyy said. Explosions also rocked Lviv on Monday in a rare and deadly attack on the western Ukrainian city — up to now a safe hub for refugees , Western officials and the media — as the world braces for a major Russian offensive farther east . At least seven people were killed in the Russian missile strikes, Ukrainian officials said, with Russian forces striking areas across Ukraine while readying a new ground offensive in the east. In Mariupol, the strategically crucial southeastern port city … [Read more...] about Russia begins new offensive in the Donbas region

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. (AP) — A chihuahua puppy shot through the neck with an arrow in Southern California was expected to survive after veterinarians removed the projectile, authorities said. A woman reported to 911 that she found the wounded dog Monday in a neighborhood near Desert Hot Springs after hearing it “screaming,” Riverside County Animal Services said in a statement. A sheriff's deputy picked up the 4-month-old female and transferred it to an animal services officer who brought the pup to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms. Veterinary staff determined that the arrow did not strike the puppy's vital arteries and it was removed. “For someone to willfully shoot this poor pup with an arrow is disgusting,” Animal Services Director Erin Gettis said in the statement. “We are shocked and we hope someone can provide us any information as to who did this." … [Read more...] about Chihuahua puppy shot with arrow is expected to survive
Let’s talk about what we’d be talking about if Julian Castro was white
Though he did not have what many would categorize as a “breakout moment” during the most recent Democratic presidential primary debate, Julián Castro did offer another reminder of why his candidacy has been essential to the primary itself — even if most observers have failed to recognize it. When one of the moderators, CNN’s Anderson Cooper, asked Castro about handgun violence, he offered much-needed nuance to the debate with the invocation of the police and how their collective behavior influences his views on gun policy. Explaining why he doesn’t support mandatory buybacks, Castro said, “I’m not going to give these police officers another reason to go door-to-door in certain communities because police violence is also gun violence.” Castro then cited Atatiana Jefferson , a 28-year-old who was in her bedroom when she was shot and killed by Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean. Jefferson’s neighbor, James Smith, dialed the Fort Worth Police Department’s non-emergency line after … [Read more...] about Let’s talk about what we’d be talking about if Julian Castro was white

All hands on deck: On Centre’s duty cut on petro products
The Union government’s decision on Saturday to cut the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹8 and ₹6, respectively, is a belated acknowledgement that April’s multi-year highs in inflation were spurred in significant measure by high fuel prices. Coming more than six months after its last duty reduction — on Deepavali eve — the latest cut is a welcome step to ease the burgeoning cost burden on producers and consumers. With the price of the Indian basket of crude oil having risen by more than 33% since November, and with a bulk of the surge coming in the wake of the Ukraine war in February, state-run oil marketing companies had raised retail fuel prices sharply over a 16-day period starting March 22. Largely as a result of the higher fuel prices and quickening food costs, inflation based on the Consumer Price Index accelerated to a 95-month high of 7.8% last month, while wholesale price gains soared to a multi-decade high of 15.1%. S&P Global’s April PMI surveys showed that both … [Read more...] about All hands on deck: On Centre’s duty cut on petro products
