When you groggily roll out of bed and make breakfast, the government edges up to your kitchen table, too. Unlike you, it's perky. It's an unseen force in your morning. The government makes sure you can see the nutrients in your cereal. It fusses over your toast, insisting that the flour it comes from has no more than 75 insect fragments and one rodent hair per 50 grams. The government also tends to your coffee, mandating that no more than 10% of your beans be moldy. Its satellites inform the weather forecast on your phone for the day ahead. The government weighs in on the water consumption in your bathroom and controls the fluoride in your toothpaste. That’s all before you leave home. The government is going to be hanging with you on and off, mostly on, until you turn off the lamp last thing at night — no new incandescent bulbs, please, under a new rule. The world of federal regulation seems both boundless and microscopic. It touches what you touch. It lends a helping … [Read more...] about From AM to PM, the fickle force of government is with you

Jon Stewart: This Is the Moment GOP Ditches Trump for DeSantis
On the same day that Joe Rogan endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for president in 2024, Jon Stewart convened a “special emergency session” of the podcast that seems to have replaced his Apple TV+ show to explain why he believes this week’s bombshell Jan. 6 Committee hearing will be the last straw for Donald Trump in the Republican Party. “I think the larger development from yesterday,” Stewart said, referring to Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, “is that more Republicans have decided Ron DeSantis is a better option. This is just too much.” While there was “nothing surprising” about how we now know Trump behaved on the day of the insurrection, the host said the difference now is that Republicans have a clear alternative. “Now they know where they’re going,” he said. “And they can steer away from Trump feeling confident. He’s lost his utility. They never fucking liked him. But he’s starting to lose his utility.” “They’re starting to realize they’ve got a guy who they … [Read more...] about Jon Stewart: This Is the Moment GOP Ditches Trump for DeSantis
Danai Gurira on Starring in Robert O’Hara’s ‘Richard III’: ‘It Should Be a Historical Play, But It’s Actually a Political Thriller’
Click here to read the full article. Robert O’Hara , the Tony Award-nominated director and acclaimed playwright, sat beneath a tree near the side of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. On the opening night of “ Richard III ,” a searing adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy mounted by O’Hara and The Public Theater in Central Park this summer, the director shied away from the photographers and the spotlight. Before taking his seat in the back of the house, watching restlessly as directors do on opening nights, he sat beneath a tree in the quiet and talked about Richard. A look at how income affects consumption habits
Last week, the National Sample Survey Office, India's official source of regular large-sample survey statistics on consumption, employment and other core socio-economic issues, put out its 558th report. The report is based on a nationally representative sample of over 1 lakh households in every state and UT, and measures the levels of consumption of various goods and services. As we've noted in the paper, the data points to a >big revival in the functioning of India's Public Distribution System. We also looked at how >income circumscribes India's food choices. That second story is the one we wanted to look at a little more closely today. 1. As people and countries get richer, they tend to eat fewer cereals and more processed foods - from bread to chips. The richest 5% of urban India each consumes two bags of chips per month on average. As people get richer, they also distinctly consume more meats, fish, milk, eggs and other nutrient-rich food; every individual in the top … [Read more...] about A look at how income affects consumption habits
Eating habits vary across classes: NSSO
Less cereals and more bread, fewer potatoes and more meats, fewer bidis and more cigarettes, less country liquor and more beer — food habits in India are sharply circumscribed by class, new data shows. The newly released 558th round of the National Sample Survey Office, India’s official source of consumption, employment and others statistics, shines a light on India’s consumption habits as of 2011-12. An analysis of data on food and non-food consumption by income group reveals how much of an effect class has on what Indians eat. The top 5 per cent of urban India spends Rs. 3,000 per capita per month on groceries and eating out on average. This class spends nearly Rs. 800 per head per month on eating out (“served processed food”) and another Rs. 206 per person per month on chips, chocolates and other packaged processed foods. At the other end of the spectrum, the bottom 5 per cent of India spends just over Rs. 400 per person per month on food, over a quarter of this on cereals … [Read more...] about Eating habits vary across classes: NSSO
