Associated Press Published 7:25 p.m. UTC Aug 31, 2018 Cincinnati — For the second year in a row, the Bengals lost a backup quarterback in the final preseason game. Matt Barkley’s left knee was injured by a low hit after he threw a pass during Cincinnati’s 27-26 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night, giving Jeff Driskel the inside track for the backup spot. “It’s a bummer Matt went down,” said Driskel, who knows how it feels. Last year, Driskel broke the thumb on his passing hand during the final preseason game at Indianapolis, sidelining him for the season. He and Barkley were competing for the No. 2 job heading into the final game. The Bengals (3-1) also have seventh-round pick Logan Woodside. Coach Marvin Lewis had no further information about Barkley’s injury after the game. It was the most high-profile job up for grabs in a game that featured few starters. The Colts’ Andrew Luck and the Bengals’ Andy Dalton … [Read more...] about Thursday’s NFL: QB Barkley injured in Bengals’ loss

FAU safety Jalen Young, returning an interception in the Conference USA Championship game, was a standout at Seminole Ridge. (Photo by Rob Foldy/Getty Images) BOCA RATON — The end of an era is quickly approaching for Florida Atlantic, although the last ride for All-Conference USA safety Jalen Young figures to be his best yet. A former star at Seminole Ridge, Young ranks third in program history with 12 interceptions and eighth in tackles (246). Young has grown from a safety in on every play to a shutdown defensive back, one who mixes an attacking mentality with precision – and, as he acknowledged when speaking to The Post this spring, a young man who can acknowledge what the “crazy ride” has been like. “It’s been up and down, but I feel like every year has taught me a lesson,” Young told The Post this spring. “I’m just trying to prove my game and take it to the next level.” After three standout seasons at FAU, Young … [Read more...] about Seminole Ridge graduate Jalen Young headlines Florida Atlantic’s veteran safety group
The NFL cornerback story entering training camp this month centers on established faces in new places. Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters are in Los Angeles (Rams). Richard Sherman is in San Francisco. Trumaine Johnson is in New York (Jets). And Vontae Davis is in Buffalo. As camp approaches, here is a team-by-team ranking of the cornerback duos: 1. Jacksonville: Jalen Ramsey is arguably the NFL’s top shutdown corner. A.J. Bouye led the Jaguars with six interceptions last year (tied for second in the league) after being acquired in free agency. The Jaguars’ 21 interceptions in 2017 were second-most. 2. Los Angeles Rams: The Rams traded for Kansas City’s Marcus Peters and the Broncos’ Aqib Talib. Peters’ 19 interceptions from 2015-17 are most in the NFL and Talib, despite a career-low one interception last year, can still change games. 3. Minnesota: The Vikings were second in pass defense last year (192.4 yards per game) and their cornerback depth chart includes … [Read more...] about NFL Summer Series: Ranking top cornerback duos after offseason changes
Editor’s note: One in a four-part summer series. Is the NFL re-emphasizing the running game? Last year, nine of the top 10 teams in rushing offenses made the playoffs, including the final four: Jacksonville (first), Philadelphia (third), Minnesota (seventh) and New England (10th). And in the last three drafts, a tailback has been selected among the top four: Dallas’ Ezekiel Elliott (fourth in 2016), Jacksonville’s Leonard Fournette (fourth in 2017) and the New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley (second this year). From 2009-15, only one tailback – Cleveland’s Trent Richardson (second in 2012) – was drafted in the top four. But that doesn’t mean every team is sinking big-time resources (draft or free agent money) into the position. The Denver Post’s NFL Summer Series kicks off with a look at each team’s tailback situation: THEY HAVE TWO NO. 1s (1) New Orleans: Last year, Mark Ingram was fifth in the league with 1,124 yards rushing and … [Read more...] about NFL Summer Series: Which teams have a true No. 1 tailback?
