President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats, with Republican help, are poised to spend $3.5 trillion during decades-high inflation. “Passage of the Inflation Reduction Act will make Biden one of the most legislatively successful presidents of the modern era,” Politico Playbook writers Ryan Lizza and Eugene Daniels wrote . Although congressional Democrats have only a four-member majority in the House and a one-member majority in the Senate, Biden has been able to pass a substantial legislative agenda. It is also notable that Biden has spent so much during the first half of his term in office. This includes: The $1.9 trillion American Recovery Act, Biden’s coronavirus relief bill The $550 billion so-called Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act The $280 billion Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) Act $700 billion Inflation Reduction Act As Politico noted, these expenditures amount to roughly $3.5 trillion and address many leftist … [Read more...] about Democrats Poised to Spend $3.5 Trillion During Historic Inflation with Republican Help

Mitch McConnell plays down midterm impact of Kansas abortion vote
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell batted away a suggestion that the referendum in Kansas which backed protecting abortion rights would impact the November midterm elections . Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked McConnell about the impact of Tuesday's vote in which Kansas rejected a constitutional amendment letting state lawmakers tighten abortion restrictions The Kentucky senator was asked if he agreed that the first electoral test since the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling enshrining federal rights to an abortion, was a "political earthquake with the potential to reshape the entire midterm campaign." In his answer, McConnell both defended the Supreme Court decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Center and called the judges who had made the ruling "unelected." "What the Supreme Court has done is said people who are elected by the American people are going to deal with this highly sensitive issue and it'll be playing out all year," … [Read more...] about Mitch McConnell plays down midterm impact of Kansas abortion vote

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Leora Levy, a first-time political candidate who received a late endorsement from former President Donald Trump, won the Connecticut Republican primary for U.S. Senate in an upset Tuesday that could signal a shift for the state GOP after years of backing moderates. A socially conservative member of the Republican National Committee, Levy defeated the party-endorsed candidate, former state House Minority Leader Themis Klarides, a social moderate, and fellow conservative Peter Lumaj. She appeared stunned by the victory when she appeared before a cheering crowd of supporters in her hometown of Greenwich. “We’re making history here. It’s really exciting,” she said. Levy thanked Trump for last week's endorsement, promising, “I will not let you down. Thank you for having my back.” Klarides, who supports … [Read more...] about Trump-backed Levy wins GOP Senate primary in Connecticut

How Schumer’s messy style delivers for Dems: ‘I persist’
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 WASHINGTON (AP) — Shoes off, an almost-empty container of leftovers, an unfinished glass of wine -- this was the exhausted portrait of one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington after Senate passage of President Joe Biden's sweeping health, climate and economic package. New York's Chuck Schumer effectively moved from minority to majority leader of the U.S. Senate on the morning of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection, and he has helmed the chamber through a tumultuous, messy and yet surprisingly productive run with the longest evenly split 50-50 Senate in the nation's history. Methodical he is not, as the crumbs scattered on the senatorial carpet in his office off the Senate floor attest. But with a willingness to broker politically unpleasant compromises and a New Yorker's drive to keep pestering his colleagues, Schumer is using his party's fragile congrol … [Read more...] about How Schumer’s messy style delivers for Dems: ‘I persist’
Republicans to People With Diabetes: Drop Dead
Republicans probably don’t like being thought of as the party of the callous , inhumane, “ kick the poor ” caucus. Which is weird, because they could have voted to ensure every American suffering from diabetes could procure their life-dependent doses of insulin at $35 a pop, and they chose not to. Thanks to 43 Republican senators voting “nay,” Democrats couldn’t overcome the 60-vote filibuster to cap the price of insulin at $35 for everyone. Mind you, this isn’t “free” or “socialized” health care—it’s insulin . Roughly 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes (37.3 million) and about 1 in 3 (96 million) have pre-diabetes, according to the CDC . In a country with both an obesity crisis and a health-care system where even people with “good insurance” can go bankrupt because of a health crisis, you’d think the GOP would be looking for ways to puff up its supposed “economic populist” credentials, rather than voting against a modest price control that would help keep tens of millions of … [Read more...] about Republicans to People With Diabetes: Drop Dead
House Dems Send Sweeping Spending Bill to Biden’s Desk
The most ambitious Democratic legislation since the Affordable Care Act is now officially on its way to President Joe Biden’s desk. On Friday afternoon, the U.S. House passed a $430 billion bill focused on climate change, health care, and tax reform by a margin of 220 to 207, with all Democrats voting for the bill and all Republicans voting against it. With the U.S. Senate having approved the bill on a party-line margin on Sunday, Democrats are heading into the August recess—and the heart of the 2022 campaign season—invigorated, having finally notched a legislative win that had escaped them for over a year. The bill with the midterm-focused name of the “Inflation Reduction Act” is the culmination of Democrats’ tortured quest to see how much of their agenda they could stuff into a bill without losing a single vote in the Senate and more than a handful of votes in the House. The legislation heading to the White House now does not, contrary to its name, do much to … [Read more...] about House Dems Send Sweeping Spending Bill to Biden’s Desk
Tshibaka Slams Murkowski Before Primary: ‘She Doesn’t Tell Us the Truth’
Trump-endorsed Kelly Tshibaka slammed establishment Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) for being two-faced ahead of the Tuesday Republican primary in Alaska. Speaking with host Matthew Boyle on Breitbart News Saturday, Tshibaka said Murkowski’s 21 year career has been marred by lying to voters about her Senate voting record. “She doesn’t tell us the truth. She says one thing here in Alaska and then does the exact opposite in D.C.,” Tshibaka said. “She’ll talk about writing the infrastructure bill with Bernie Sanders, but she won’t tell us that the radical extremists in the Biden administration are piling up all these new regulations on us [in the bill]. It drives up the rate of inflation so high that we won’t see additional funding, they’ve got all these regulations and permits we’ve got a jump through that we’re gonna see barely any infrastructure.” Tshibaka continued to point to Murkowski’s politics of flip-flop. “It’s all about the Green New Deal. She ran ads just a couple of … [Read more...] about Tshibaka Slams Murkowski Before Primary: ‘She Doesn’t Tell Us the Truth’

Biden to sign massive climate, health care legislation
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — President Joe Biden will sign Democrats’ landmark climate change and health care bill on Tuesday, delivering what he has called the “final piece” of his pared-down domestic agenda, as he aims to boost his party’s standing with voters less than three months before midterm elections. The legislation includes the most substantial federal investment in history to fight climate change — some $375 billion over the decade — and would cap prescription drug costs at $2,000 out-of-pocket annually for Medicare recipients. It also would help an estimated 13 million Americans pay for health care insurance by extending subsidies provided during the coronavirus pandemic. The measure is paid for by new taxes on large companies and stepped-up IRS enforcement of wealthy individuals and entities, with additional funds going to reduce the federal deficit. The House on Friday approved the measure on a party-line 220-207 vote. It passed the Senate days earlier with Vice … [Read more...] about Biden to sign massive climate, health care legislation
