Nearly 100 shots rang out near a recreation center in Mayor Jim Kenney’s (D) Philadelphia at approximately 7:00 p.m. Tuesday after at least two suspects opened fire. 6 ABC reported that “children were practicing sports” when two suspects exited a white SUV and opened fire. Five people were injured as a result. A teenage witness said, “We were just sitting there laughing and talking and after that, we heard two gunshots. We thought it was fireworks at first, so we didn’t run, but after that the automatic gun started going off, we all started running.” FOX 29 noted that there may have been more than two shooters and that “police believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud between two groups in the neighborhood”: NEW: Law enforcement sources tell me video appears to show SIX shooters, not 4. 3 in custody, 3 got away. Motive believed to be ongoing feud b/w 2 groups in neighborhood. 2 of shooting victims were innocent bystanders, sources say @FOX29philly … [Read more...] about Nearly 100 Shots Ring Out as Gunmen Open Fire in Jim Kenney’s Philadelphia

Most Democrats Don’t Want Biden in 2024, New Poll Shows
President Biden is facing an alarming level of doubt from inside his own party, with 64 percent of Democratic voters saying they would prefer a new standard-bearer in the 2024 presidential campaign, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll, as voters nationwide have soured on his leadership, giving him a meager 33 percent job-approval rating. Widespread concerns about the economy and inflation have helped turn the national mood decidedly dark, both on Mr. Biden and the trajectory of the nation. More than three-quarters of registered voters see the United States moving in the wrong direction, a pervasive sense of pessimism that spans every corner of the country, every age range and racial group, cities, suburbs and rural areas, as well as both political parties. Only 13 percent of American voters said the nation was on the right track — the lowest point in Times polling since the depths of the financial crisis more than a decade ago. Voters on the Direction of … [Read more...] about Most Democrats Don’t Want Biden in 2024, New Poll Shows

With President Biden’s approval rating mired in the 30s and with nearly 80 percent of voters saying the country is heading in the wrong direction , all the ingredients seem to be in place for a Republican sweep in the November midterm elections. But Democrats and Republicans begin the campaign in a surprisingly close race for control of Congress, according to the first New York Times/Siena College survey of the cycle. What is your preference for the outcome of the 2022 congressional elections? Democratic control Dem. control 41% Republican control Rep. control 40% Other Other 19% Overall among registered voters, 41 percent said they preferred Democrats to control Congress compared with 40 percent who preferred Republican control. Among likely voters, Republicans led by one percentage point, 44 percent to 43 percent, reflecting the tendency for the party out of power to enjoy a turnout advantage in midterms. Will the Real AIADMK Please Stand Up? EPS-OPS Tug-of-War Will Weaken Dravidian Citadel, Give Ammo to BJP Following the death of J Jayalalithaa in December 2016, the AIADMK has been constantly buffeted by internal challenges. One after other — in a constant thrum of discontent — senior leaders of the party have been at war with one another. At any given point after her death, Jayalalithaa’s party had two factions; when VK Sasikala’s nephew was up and about in the daily news cycle, AIADMK had three factions: one led by himself, and the other two by O Panneerselvam and Edappadi Palaniswami. Raigad Redux? Boat with Weapons Surfaces in Maharashtra, along with Memories of 1993 Blasts
As reports of a suspicious boat with guns, bullets, and explosives being found off the Raigad coast in Maharashtra emerged on Thursday, a familiar fear coursed through the district and neighbouring areas, including Mumbai. On March 12, 1993, a series of bomb blasts brought India’s financial capital, then known as Bombay, to a wailing stop. Twelve bombs went off within a span of two hours and ten minutes that rocked several parts of the city, killing over 250 people. The explosions were the first large-scale coordinated terror attack to be carried out in the world and were the first terror attack where RDX was used as an explosive. Between 1:29 pm and 3:40 pm, a series of well-planned blasts ripped through the commercial and most crowded spots across the city. An over 150-member team of the Mumbai police force cracked the case within 48 hours. Set up under the order of Rakesh Maria, the then deputy commissioner of police, they discovered an abandoned scooter in Mahim. It … [Read more...] about Raigad Redux? The 2022 Summer Movie Season Affirmed That Movies Are Here to Stay
Click here to read the full article. Not very long into the pandemic, a collective tremor of dread passed through the movie industry: Was this the beginning of the end? It wasn’t the first time Hollywood had been roiled by a crisis mentality. The most obvious precursor was the rise of television in the late ’40s and ’50s, which resulted in movies turning themselves into over-the-top widescreen spectacles — a frantic race to be big, bigger, biggest. But I think it’s fair to say that for much of 2020 and 2021, the fear about what was going to happen to movies was nothing less than existential. Would they survive? Would movie theaters, those seductive mass cocoons that ruled for a century, now dwindle and die, their marquees standing as relics of a lost civilization, like something out of a zombie film? Would audience enthusiasm for movies wither on the vine? Not because it had disappeared, but because it had evolved toward a new mode of entertainment consumption, a revolution … [Read more...] about The 2022 Summer Movie Season Affirmed That Movies Are Here to Stay
Parentless Florida girl whom court deemed not ‘sufficiently mature’ is nearing Florida’s cutoff to seek an abortion
The window for getting an abortion in her home state is closing for a parentless, pregnant 16-year-old Florida girl who was deemed not “sufficiently mature to decide whether to terminate her pregnancy” by a panel of appeals court judges. Florida bans all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy under a law that Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, signed in April . And the teenager, identified in court papers as Jane Doe 22-B, was 11 weeks pregnant as of Monday. She is parentless and a ward of the state until she turns 18. “They are essentially forcing her into parenthood,” state Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, said at a news conference Wednesday . “She’s not mature enough to say, ‘I’m not ready to be a parent.’ But she’s mature enough to be forced to give birth.” When asked how the three-judge panel of the state’s First District Court of Appeal could have reached such a contradictory conclusion, Jeri B. Cohen, a retired Miami-Dade child welfare judge, said: “That’s the … [Read more...] about Parentless Florida girl whom court deemed not ‘sufficiently mature’ is nearing Florida’s cutoff to seek an abortion
Ansel Adams at 100
As a boy, I watched the epochal photo exhibit "This Is the American Earth" come together in 1955 at Ansel Adams's studio in Yosemite Valley. Three years later, at the photographer's house in San Francisco, I witnessed the exhibit's transformation into a book. My vantage point in San Francisco was the edge of the big, image-strewn table where the book's layout was done. My strategy was to keep quiet. I remember the clarity of Adams's original prints. I can still see the gradations of his grays—no other darkroom maestro had his control of halftones—and the darkness of his darks. Of all the great black-and-white photographers, Ansel Adams was the blackest and the whitest. Those strong contrasts, his trademark, seem to have fixed themselves indelibly in my memory. I remember the creative electricity among the three collaborators: Adams; the exhibit designer Nancy Newhall, who wrote the text; and my father, David Brower , who edited the book. Adams was even then recognized as the … [Read more...] about Ansel Adams at 100
You Have No Idea How Good Mosquitoes Are at Smelling Us
Nothing gets a female mosquito going quite like the stench of human BO . The chase can begin from more than 100 feet away , with a plume of breath that wafts carbon dioxide onto the nubby sensory organ atop the insect’s mouth. Her senses snared, she flies person-ward, until her antennae start to buzz with the pungent perfume of skin. Lured closer still, she homes in on her host’s body heat, then touches down on a landing pad of flesh that she can taste with her legs . She punctures her victim with her spear-like stylet and slurps the iron-rich blood within. The entire ritual is intricate and obsessive—and nearly impossible to disrupt. Of more than 3,500 mosquito species that skulk about the planet, fewer than 10 percent (and only the females, at that) enjoy nibbling on humans. But once they’re on the prowl for people, neither rain nor zappers nor citronella candles will deter them. From the tips of their antennae to the bottoms of their little insect feet, these … [Read more...] about You Have No Idea How Good Mosquitoes Are at Smelling Us
Alleged Capitol rioter wants out of house arrest to visit renaissance faire
A Pennsylvania woman accused of stealing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 's laptop during the Capitol riot with the intent of selling it to Russia wants out of her house arrest so she can attend a renaissance fair, according to court documents. Riley Williams, of Mechanicsburg, made a request to a federal court to allow her to visit the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Manheim this weekend, according to The Patriot-News, a Pennsylvania newspaper. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is a longstanding event where hundreds of people dress up as figures from the 16th century and visitors can buy wares and food presented in the theme of the time period. Williams was charged with trespassing as well as violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, 2021, both of which are misdemeanors. Other charges presented against Williams include theft of government property and obstruction of an official proceeding, which carry possible sentences of 20 years in jail.
