June 24, 2022 by www.news18.com

The Delhi High Court on Friday expressed hope that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) would consider the inclusion of high jumper Tejaswin Shankar and four other athletes in the national squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games by increasing the quota of the squad. “This court is hopeful that the IOA would increase the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) quota for participation in the Commonwealth Games so that all five additionally selected athletes (including Shankar) are included in the Commonwealth contingent,” said Justice Jasmeet Singh slating the matter for further hearing on July 4. The court’s observation was following the submission of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), in which it was informed that Shankar can be included in the squad if the AFI quota is increased by IOA. Shankar, India’s high jump national record holder, was knocking the doors of the Delhi High Court following his exclusion from the 2022 Commonwealth Games squad. 2020 Delhi Riots: Khalid’s Speech in Bad Taste but Doesn’t Make it Terrorist Act, Observes HC

May 30, 2022 by www.news18.com

The Delhi High Court on Monday observed the speech delivered by former JNU student Umar Khalid, arrested in a UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the riots here in February 2020, in Amravati, Maharashtra was in bad taste but it does not make it a terrorist act. The high court’s observation came while hearing the bail plea of Khalid who has challenged a trial court’s March 24 order dismissing his bail application in the case. “That the speech is in bad taste, does not make it a terrorist act. We understand that extremely well. If the case of the prosecution is premised on how offensive the speech was, that by itself would not constitute an offence. We will give them (prosecution) the opportunity, a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagar said. The bench further said that the speech was “offensive” and “distasteful” and “may tantamount to defamation but it will not tantamount to a terrorist activity.” The court was hearing the submissions advanced by … [Read more...] about 2020 Delhi Riots: Khalid’s Speech in Bad Taste but Doesn’t Make it Terrorist Act, Observes HC

June 24, 2022 by www.news18.com

Veteran sports administrator Narinder Batra was on Friday ordered to stop functioning as Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president by the Delhi High Court “in a contempt proceeding”, a month after it asked him to relinquish the top job. A vacation bench of Justice Dinesh Sharma passed the order on a contempt petition filed by Olympian and hockey World Cup winner Aslam Sher Khan. “The court ordered that Mr. Narinder Batra should stop from functioning as IOA president with immediate effect,” advocate Vanshdeep Dalmia, who appeared on behalf of Khan, told PTI. “It was a contempt proceeding as Mr. Batra was continuing to attend meeting as IOA president despite an earlier order of this court. “The court also said Mr. Anil Khanna, senior vice-president, will be the acting president of the IOA,” he added. On May 25, Batra was removed as IOA chief after the Delhi High Court struck down the post of ‘life member’ in Hockey India, courtesy which he had contested and won the apex body … [Read more...] about Delhi High Court Orders Narinder Batra to Stop Functioning as IOA Chief

Delhi HC Asks AFI to Reconsider High Jumper Tejaswin Shankar’s Inclusion in CWG Squad

June 22, 2022 by www.news18.com

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to reconsider its decision and include high jumper Tejaswin Shankar in the national squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Shankar, India’s high jump national record holder, was knocking the doors of the Delhi High Court following his exclusion from the 2022 Commonwealth Games squad. He was not included in the list of 37 names picked by the federation that held a selection committee meeting last week. “The court has recorded that he is the major contender for this year and only two people above him have the better jumps in the world. He met the qualification marks set by the AFI itself. The federation has been actively told to consider his participation in the selection meet,” his counsel Adv Malak Bhatt told IANS. He further said: “It’s a progressive order today…let’s see what happens on Friday because the AFI was saying they have a quota of 36 people which they can’t exceed but the high … [Read more...] about Delhi HC Asks AFI to Reconsider High Jumper Tejaswin Shankar’s Inclusion in CWG Squad

What The Appointment of Tapan Deka as IB Chief And Samant Goel’s Extension as R&AW Head Signal

June 24, 2022 by www.news18.com

In two extraordinary decisions, the Narendra Modi government has given charge of the Intelligence Bureau to Tapan Deka, a 1988-batch Himachal Pradesh-cadre IPS officer, and a second extension as R&AW chief to Samant Goel, a 1984-batch IPS officer from the Punjab cadre. Deka has superseded seven officers from the 1987 and 88 batches, and this is being seen as a revolutionary step by the Modi government. With his appointment, the IB is going to lose seven officers of special director-level who are much senior to many of the state director generals of police. Deka joined the IB earlier as assistant director, has wide expertise, and has dealt with challenges in the Northeast, said sources. He was even posted in the region. He has been associated with anti-terror operations for more than a decade and a half. Deka was involved in counterterror operations in Kashmir as well and is known as a trusted man of union home minister Amit Shah. He was also incharge of the … [Read more...] about What The Appointment of Tapan Deka as IB Chief And Samant Goel’s Extension as R&AW Head Signal

Letters to the Editor — June 23, 2022

June 23, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Presidential candidate The decision made by the ruling NDA government to nominate Droupadi Murmu as its presidential candidate for India’s presidential elections in July is laudable. Ms. Murmu represents real empowerment as her journey in life is very inspiring. Despite personal setbacks she dedicated her life to public service. Let us hope that she will do justice to the post. Mejari Mallikarjuna, Visakhapatnam It is certainly a smart move and the NDA has stolen a march over the Opposition. Ms. Murmu’s background is sure to send a message of pride and hope to Adivasis. On the other hand, the Opposition must blame itself for failing to rise to the occasion. If Ms. Murmu wins, it is hoped that it does not remain a development of mere optics. It should infuse an urgent sense of direction and spirit in the Government to protect the rights of, and deliver justice to, Adivasis, many of whom are oppressed for trying to defend their constitutional and human rights.
