Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. Cops Confuse ‘ANTHRAX’ With ‘ANTIFA’ in Hunt for Violent Protester
A man who drew a gun and put a protester in a headlock at a “Back The Blue” rally during the peak of police-brutality protests last year openly displayed anti-fascist sympathies, according to a confidential police bulletin circulated months later. “‘ANTIFA’ is a patch on the right shoulder of the subject,” reads the bulletin, a copy of which was obtained by The Daily Beast. But the patch does not say “ANTIFA” at all. It’s a logo patch for the heavy metal band Anthrax. Last June, even as racial-justice protests swept the country, one pro-police event in Everett, Washington, made national headlines. There, in what critics described as an unequal application of justice , a teenager was arrested for taunting police with a doughnut, while a pro-police demonstrator was not arrested after putting a man in a headlock and drawing a gun. But two months after the protest, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office did circulate an internal bulletin about the gun-wielding man, according … [Read more...] about Cops Confuse ‘ANTHRAX’ With ‘ANTIFA’ in Hunt for Violent Protester
Senate Democrats’ bill to keep abortion legal nationwide falls to GOP-led filibuster
WASHINGTON — The Senate failed to advance a Democratic-led bill Wednesday that would enshrine broad protections for legal abortion nationwide, a vote triggered by a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that indicates Roe v. Wade is likely to be overturned. The Women's Health Protection Act , which has passed the House , won 49 votes, falling far short of the 60 senators needed to break a filibuster. All 50 Republicans and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., voted against proceeding to debate. The vote was 49-51. Moments before the vote, a group of House members appeared at the Senate side of the Capitol and chanted "my body, my decision!" as they walked along the halls outside the chamber. ‘We’ve got to go to work’ — Mario Cristobal welcomes alumni, high school recruits to Hurricanes’ Legends Camp
There weren’t any flashy cars or sets for elaborate photo shoots laid out for recruits at Miami’s Legends Camp on Saturday morning. Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal told the hundreds of high school players, coaches and family members on UM’s campus that they were there to work. The returning Miami alumni, with numerous Super Bowl rings and Pro Bowl selections on their resumes, brought the flash. “It’s not time for paradise yet,” said Cristobal, referring to the previous name of the team’s flagship summer camp. “We’ve got to go to work.” “Work” was the theme of the camp, as former Hurricanes and Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin followed Cristobal’s opening speech with a similar message. “Who’s going to make a commitment to one day be coming back here with a black shirt that says, ‘Legends’?” Irvin said, referring to the shirts Miami alumni were wearing. The camp was part of a busy weekend for Cristobal and UM’s coaching staff. In addition to the camp, the Hurricanes … [Read more...] about ‘We’ve got to go to work’ — Mario Cristobal welcomes alumni, high school recruits to Hurricanes’ Legends Camp
