Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on Sunday, and at our house we’re having the same Greek Easter debate we’ve been having since forever. No, not whether there is a hell. That’s settled. It’s about tradition, and whether to keep the head on the Easter lamb.Tradition!!!Tradition dictates that when you spit roast an Easter lamb, you leave the head on, so guests and other strangers to our Greek ways may witness nature in all its glory. But Betty doesn’t want our guests to see the head and the eyes and the teeth that are exposed when the gums withdraw as the lamb roasts over hot coals.“No way, no, no, no,” says Betty. “You can’t leave the head on. The kids will see it and freak out. You’re the host. You’re supposed to please your guests, not make them sick. So, no.”She gave me her Sicilian look. It wasn’t the best time to remind her that roast lamb head — with garlic and rosemary — is a delicacy in … [Read more...] about The Greek Easter lamb debate: Head on or off?
Who is it between? We all know the face off is between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen, but it's also between two very different visions of France. In short it's pro-globalisation, pro-EU Macron vs a "France first" anti-EU Le Pen. What times does it start? The show will begin at 9pm so we can expect Macron and Le Pen to be going at each other toe to toe by 9.01pm. How long will it last? It is planned to last a full two hours and 20 minutes but organizers suggest it could go on for longer so don't expect to get an early night if you want to watch the debate until the end. Where can I watch it? It will be broadcast live on the French TV channels TF1 and France 2. However, the two channels will allow other broadcast outlets to share their coverage, so it will be on news channels like BFM TV. We will also be live blogging the debate as well as the reaction. Who will be the moderators? The debates were originally going to be hosted by two male journalists but the … [Read more...] about Macron vs Le Pen: All you need to know about tonight’s live TV election debate
LINCOLN — Nineteen state senators gathered in a show of support Wednesday for legislation that would regulate bottle clubs, like the Omaha strip club near 72nd and Dodge where nude dancing is featured.State Sen. Theresa Thibodeau of Omaha, who has been pushing the issue this year, won approval of a compromise amendment on Tuesday that would require bottle clubs to obtain state “bottle club” licenses, which would be reviewed by a local city council or county board and then approved by the State Liquor Control Commission.Currently, bottle clubs — private clubs where members can bring their own “bottle” of liquor or beer — are not regulated by the state. Thibodeau, along with Sens. Patty Pansing Brooks and Suzanne Geist, both of Lincoln, said at a noon press conference that bottle clubs that allow nude dancing and allow customers to touch dancers in private rooms are places ripe for sex trafficking.Thibodeau said she believes it amounts to … [Read more...] about Legislators rally for regulating bottle clubs such as Omaha strip club
LINCOLN — A last-ditch effort to rein in bottle clubs that offer nude dancing was pulled back Wednesday in the State Legislature, a move that may signal the issue’s demise for 2018.Before that happened, lawmakers debated the need to regulate private clubs where members can bring their own liquor, those as young as 18 can be admitted, and law enforcement cannot enter without a search warrant. Some also raised concerns about the exploitation of female dancers who perform at “bottle clubs” operated by Shane Harrington, a controversial adult entertainment entrepreneur who has threatened to sue the Legislature if it passes restrictions on his businesses. State Sen. Theresa Thibodeau of Omaha said she believes that allowing patrons to buy private dances in which they can touch a dancer’s breasts and buttocks — as Harrington has said is allowed at his clubs — meets the legal definition of prostitution. The senator has asked the Nebraska Attorney … [Read more...] about Effort to regulate BYOB clubs with nude dancers hits snag in Nebraska Legislature
Leading Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker was called a “liar” and a “fraud” by two rivals as the billionaire businessman’s ties to secret offshore shell companies became the focus of the final forum of the campaign Wednesday night. For his part, Pritzker avoided getting into specifics of his financial holdings, and claimed the offshore companies were investment instruments of family trusts established long ago and that charity was the beneficiary, not himself.“I have no control over those trusts, the entities that are created. Just like all trusts, they make investments, so they were created by the people who control those trusts. And remember, those trusts are focused on charitable giving,” said Pritzker, who has declined to make available his complete tax returns or any returns from the trusts.Rival Daniel Biss called Pritzker’s explanation an “unbelievable mess of word salad” in contending the Hyatt Hotel fortune … [Read more...] about Pritzker called ‘liar,’ ‘fraud’ during final Democratic governor debate
