Coheed and Cambria's “Vaxis II” is a sprawling 13-track prog-rock symphony, out Friday. Edinburgh Castle bar’s parrot dies at 38, 1990
Here’s a look at the past. Items have been culled from The Chronicle’s archives of 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago. 1990 June 20: The subject of an impromptu wake last night was a parrot, Winston by name, who died in May. He was 38. The bird was a fixture at Edinburgh Castle, a bar at 950 Geary that is a home away from home to English, Scottish and Ulster Irish expatriates. “He was the last of the original employees,” said Read Gilmore , one of 11 owners who bought the bar from founders Douglas Kirk and Robert Johnson in 1987. Perhaps predictably for a bird whose diet included many martinis, Winston died of kidney trouble. Any secrets he had were taken with him to the grave — for the past eight years, the bird was silent. “He was Australian, and one day an Aussie came in here and spoke to him at length,” said Paul Toulmin , an insurance manager, amateur actor and one of the bar’s owners. “We don’t know what the fellow said, but Winston retired to the back of his cage for … [Read more...] about Edinburgh Castle bar’s parrot dies at 38, 1990
How to remove the NRA’s cold, dead hands from the republic’s neck | Opinion
The news defies belief, even in these unbelievable times: The Supreme Court just overturned New York State's 100-year-old law that requires showing a specific need for protection in order to get a permit to carry a concealed gun in public. This comes even as the Senate is on the verge of passing a bipartisan deal on gun safety, which highlights just how out of touch this decision is with the overwhelming majority of Americans who support common-sense gun safety measures. To say this couldn't come at a worse time is an understatement. Last year was one of the deadliest on record in the United States, with the highest rate of gun homicide since 1994 . The situation is especially dire for people of color, with Black Americans 10 times more likely to die by gun homicide than white Americans. Young people are also bearing a heavy burden — in 2020, gun violence overtook car crashes as the leading cause of death for American children and teens. And of course, when gun crime rises, … [Read more...] about How to remove the NRA’s cold, dead hands from the republic’s neck | Opinion
White Power, White Violence
The mass shooting of Black grocery shoppers in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday follows a string of similar attacks. Gunmen have targeted worshippers at synagogues and mosques and temples and Bible study; they have opened fire on summer camps and people at festivals. We know the names of these places: Charleston; El Paso; Poway; Pittsburgh; Oak Creek; Christchurch, New Zealand. We know the names of the shooters, too, although I won’t list them here, because adding to their notoriety deepens the problem. Some of us also know by now that although we might think these are attacks on specific victim groups—and they are attacks on Black, Jewish, Islamic, Sikh, Latino, and immigrant populations—the aforementioned examples have all been part of one movement. In each event, a white-power activist was the perpetrator. Several of the assailants wrote extensively about their motivations in manifestos that outlined a coherent political ideology. And in the United States, they have been backed … [Read more...] about White Power, White Violence

Mike Pence Slams Biden Administration in Visit with Iranian Dissidents: ‘Appeasement Has Never Worked and Never Will’
The Biden administration threatens to “unravel all the progress” the Trump administration made in marginalizing the Iranian regime, according to former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who expressed undying support for Iranian resistance while blasting the Biden team’s new concessions to the “tyrants” in Tehran, its “virtual abandonment of our ally Israel,” and the “disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan,” which have emboldened the “adversaries of freedom” that now sense “weakness” in the American administration. Pence, who is currently visiting Albania to meet with the Iranian opposition MEK (Mujahadin-e Khalq) and its political leader Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), at their “Ashraf-3” headquarters, delivered a major foreign policy speech focusing on Iran on Thursday. He began by calling it a “great honor” and “privilege” to be at the site “where the eternal flame of freedom in Iran burns bright.” Hon. Mr. and Mrs. … [Read more...] about Mike Pence Slams Biden Administration in Visit with Iranian Dissidents: ‘Appeasement Has Never Worked and Never Will’
