Struggling families are being "cut off from the internet" as the soaring cost of broadband outstrips wage rises, Labour has warned. Latest figures show that between 2015 and last year, broadband prices rose by more than 30% - while salaries went up by around 17%. One in 20 households are struggling to pay for the service, with Labour blaming the government for allowing Openreach - the main broadband infrastructure provider - to charge companies more for network rental. This meant providers like BT, Talk Talk, Vodafone and John Lewis increased charges by over 9% in just a year. Shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell said: “Families face being cut off from the internet as a result of the Conservative cost of living crisis. Higher broadband bills are piling pressure on household budgets, on top of rising food, energy and fuel prices. “Instead of fixing the cost-of-living crisis, the Conservatives are fighting with each other. Labour's Lucy Powell has warned that squeezed … [Read more...] about Families being ‘cut off from internet’ as broadband costs rise twice as fast as wages

‘A Quiet Place Part II’ Review: Sequel Offers Some Scares but Mostly Treads Water
A Quiet Place Part II opens marvelously with a shot of small town America. Main Street is dead. Nothing moves, other than the American flag flapping in a lonely breeze. Then a pickup in a real hurry zooms into frame, parks, and out jumps Lee Abbott (John Krasinski), who’s supposed to be dead. Instead, he does a fast walk down an empty sidewalk and enters a store to … buy some snacks. This is Day 1 of the alien invasion. We’re watching a short prequel, a flashback, and even though we know who lives and who doesn’t, the sequence is still a stunner. At a precise moment that leaves us wanting more (in a good way), we leap to day 474, to the exact moment 2018’s out-of-nowhere, smash-hit original ended. Lee is dead, the family farm is ravaged, and in order to survive in a world where noise equals a grisly death, the Abbott family has no choice other than to swallow their grief and move on. The “family,” of course, is matriarch Evelyn (a terrific Emily Blunt), daughter Regan … [Read more...] about ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ Review: Sequel Offers Some Scares but Mostly Treads Water

United Nations chief urges nuclear powers to abide by no-first-use pledge
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on August 8 urged countries with nuclear weapons to stick to their no-first-use commitment of their atomic arsenals, warning that the nuclear arms race has returned amid growing international tension. “This is the moment … to ask the nuclear-armed countries to commit to the principle of non-first-use and to commit to not use and not threaten the non-nuclear countries,” Mr. Guterres said at a news conference in Tokyo, two days after he visited Hiroshima to commemorate victims of the August 6, 1945, atomic bombing. “I think that nobody, nobody can accept the idea that a new nuclear war would happen. This will be the destruction of the planet," Mr. Guterres said. "What is clear is if nobody uses for the first time then there will be no nuclear war.” Fears of a third atomic bombing have been on the rise amid Russia's threats of a nuclear attack since its war on Ukraine began in February. Four people were killed and nine others injured in a flash flood in southwest China on Saturday, local authorities said.
