What Do Tattoos and Knitting Say About U.S.?
Here are some factoids to take to the "Jeopardy" audition: Over the past two generations, the number of left-handed Americans has nearly doubled. Between 2004 and 2005, the purchase of fashion yarn increased 56 percent. The fastest growing group of knitters are teens and twentysomethings. The fastest growing group of videogamers? Moms over the age of 45. People making more than $75,000 a year are much more likely to be among the 30 million Americans with tattoos than members of lower-income groups. Of young Californians surveyed last year, 1 percent aspire to become military snipers. Only 77 of Harvard's 6,700 undergraduates are majoring in math. At Yale, that number is 38 out of 5,300. These seemingly random bits of trivia of American life are the stuff of "Microtrends," a new book by pollster Mark Penn, which, he says, reveal the often baffling "under the radar" shifts that are reshaping American society—from one based on group identity and forces of circumstance such as race, … [Read more...] about What Do Tattoos and Knitting Say About U.S.?
US newspapers continuing to die at rate of 2 each week
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 NEW YORK (AP) — Despite a growing recognition of the problem, the United States continues to see newspapers die at the rate of two per week, according to a report issued Wednesday on the state of local news. Areas of the country that find themselves without a reliable source of local news tend to be poorer, older and less educated than those covered well, Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media and Integrated Marketing Communications said. The country had 6,377 newspapers at the end of May, down from 8,891 in 2005, the report said. While the pandemic didn't quite cause the reckoning that some in the industry feared, 360 newspapers have shut down since the end of 2019, all but 24 of them weeklies serving small communities. An estimated 75,000 journalists worked in newspapers in 2006, and now that's down to 31,000, Northwestern said. Annual newspaper revenue slipped … [Read more...] about US newspapers continuing to die at rate of 2 each week
Ben & Jerry’s returns to Israel despite ice cream maker’s objections
JERUSALEM — A new agreement in Israel will put Ben & Jerry’s ice cream back on shelves in annexed east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank despite the ice cream maker’s protest of Israeli policies , according to Unilever, the company that owns the brand. The Vermont company, which has long backed liberal causes, said it does not agree with the decision, and it’s unclear if the product — which would only be sold with Hebrew and Arabic labeling — would have the same appeal to customers. Israel hailed the move as a victory in its ongoing campaign against the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. BDS aims to bring economic pressure to bear on Israel over its military occupation of lands the Palestinians want for a future state. July 2021: Ben and Jerry’s to stop selling ice cream in Israeli settlements July 20, 2021 03:06 Unilever, which acquired Ben & Jerry’s in 2000 but distanced itself from the ice … [Read more...] about Ben & Jerry’s returns to Israel despite ice cream maker’s objections
California’s gas-tax hike takes effect Friday. Why did efforts to stop it fail?
California drivers will pay about 3 cents more per gallon in gas taxes starting Friday after state legislators rejected a push to suspend the increase amid soaring costs at the pump. Drivers will now pay about 36 cents more to refuel a typical sedan, with a 13-gallon tank, from empty. The annual inflationary adjustment to the gas tax will increase the rate from 51.1 cents per gallon to 53.9 cents per gallon. The tax is built into the price of gas in California, which is hovering around $6.30 per gallon on average — by far the highest in the nation. The sales tax hike comes after some Democratic state legislators earlier rejected Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposal to suspend the increase for one year to help drivers cope with sky-high gas prices due to inflation and the war in Ukraine. Instead, Newsom and lawmakers agreed to send stimulus payments to state income tax filers to help them deal with the effects of soaring inflation. “To help cover the costs of inflation and rising … [Read more...] about California’s gas-tax hike takes effect Friday.
