The Aurora city manager fired the city’s police chief Wednesday, saying he had general concerns about her leadership and that areas of the department needed “refocused attention.” The decision follows weeks of speculation as to the future of Chief Vanessa Wilson, who took over the leadership of the Aurora Police Department in 2020 as it careened through a series of high-profile controversies under its former chief. Wilson pledged to restore community trust in the department and implement reforms, even as the agency was thrust into the national spotlight following the death of Elijah McClain during a violent arrest by Aurora police. But she faced growing criticism and pressure as an increasing number of officers left the department and crime in the city spiked. “It is clear that Chief Wilson has prioritized community involvement,” City Manager Jim Twombly said in a news release announcing her firing. “However, the police chief also needs to effectively manage the … [Read more...] about Aurora fires police Chief Vanessa Wilson; chief was subject of “smear campaign,” her attorney says

Drew Brees Weighs Hanging Up His NBC Mic, Returning to the NFL
After only one season behind the mic, former NFL quarterback Drew Brees is weighing his options for the near future and is thinking about putting his broadcast career on hold and going back to the NFL. Brees spent the past season as an NBC Sports analyst, but NBC is less than thrilled with his first year, according to some reports. According to the New York Post , “NBC soured on Brees’ potential after originally believing he could develop into the heir apparent to Cris Collinsworth on Sunday Night Football games.” Indeed, Brees’ performance during the Bengals-Raiders playoff game was panned. But Brees denies the reports that his broadcast career is in jeopardy, and NBC refused to reply to the paper’s requests for comment. On Sunday, Brees tweeted, “Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided. I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf … [Read more...] about Drew Brees Weighs Hanging Up His NBC Mic, Returning to the NFL
The tantalizing possibilities of the Knicks’ best-case lottery scenario
It’s always dangerous to get conclusive about a draft class before the picks are called, let alone before the players step on the court, but the preliminary consensus among scouts and experts is that 2022 is top heavy. Specifically, there are four players that sit as the cream. So for the Knicks, who enter the draft lottery at No. 11, the drawing of Ping Pong balls Tuesday night in Chicago is consequential. Potentially franchise altering. There is a decent enough chance for them to crack the top-4 (9.4%) to pay attention, and the reaction of the always demonstrative William Wesley, who is sitting for the Knicks on the dais , will be worth a view regardless of the outcome. And if the Knicks’ lottery luck changes and the franchise moves up in the lottery for the first time since 1985, here’s a breakdown of the four prospective rewards (we’re ignoring that the team could also use such a lucrative pick to trade for a star. Ahem, Donovan Mitchell): JABARI SMITH JR. AGE: … [Read more...] about The tantalizing possibilities of the Knicks’ best-case lottery scenario
Will Nazem Kadri be a marked man against St. Louis? The Avalanche isn’t overly concerned about the bad blood from the past
Nazem Kadri is prepared for whatever shenanigans might develop in Game 1 Tuesday of the Western Conference semifinals against St. Louis. The Avalanche center might be asked to fight for the third time in four meetings against the Blues this season. Or, he could be targeted for big hits and taunted. What is known is that St. Louis will try to take Kadri off his game. Just as the Avs will try to make it uneasy for the Blues’ stars. There is no forgetting in hockey, however, and for TNT/Blues analyst Darren Pang, the bad blood between Kadri and the Blues is a juicy storyline heading into Game 1 at Ball Arena. “No question about it. Every single time there is a skirmish or a hit, it’s one of those individual battles you don’t take your eyes off of, and you wonder if there’s anything more, is something else going to happen?” Pang said in a phone interview. The anniversary of Kadri’s check-to-the-head of Blues defenseman Justin Faulk is Thursday, which will be Game 2 of the … [Read more...] about Will Nazem Kadri be a marked man against St. Louis? Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups. YouTube's recommendation algorithm, they say, … [Read more...] about Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
Facebook, Twitter Battling Buffalo Shooting Video 48 Hours On
The gruesome video filmed by a gunman during a mass shooting at a supermarket that left 10 people dead could still be found on social media two days after the attack. The shooter's footage was still being shared on Twitter on Monday, 48 hours after he filmed the violent deaths of his victims at the Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday. Facebook 's moderators have also been battling to remove links to the violent footage on their platform. Police described the mass shooting as "racially motivated violent extremism," after 11 of the 13 victims were revealed to be Black. Officers arrested 18-year-old Payton Gendron of Conklin, New York, outside the store on suspicion of murder. Facebook and Twitter have been criticized for not making sure that the footage hasn't been fully removed from their sites. Newsweek was easily able to find and view the footage via the two sites; it has reported the posts to moderators. A Meta spokesperson for Facebook told Newsweek … [Read more...] about Facebook, Twitter Battling Buffalo Shooting Video 48 Hours On
Pro-Trump pastor slams GOP for Rittenhouse sympathy amid Buffalo shooting
Republican reactions to the Buffalo mass shooting on Saturday have drawn harsh criticism from an unlikely source: a notably pro-Trump religious leader. Dr. Darrell Scott, an Ohio pastor and one of the earliest Evangelical Christian leaders to back former President Donald Trump 's 2016 campaign, released a statement Monday on Twitter , slamming the lack of sympathy that GOP lawmakers have shown for the victims of the Buffalo shooting. Scott also called out the positive reactions that Kyle Rittenhouse and Nicholas Sandman received on the Right. "The lack of expressions of sympathy for 10 dead AMERICAN victims of a mass shooting by the 'Leaders' of the Right is bad," Scott wrote on Twitter. "They expressed more sympathy for Kyle Rittenhouse, who killed 3 people, and Nicolas Sandmann, who got stared at, than for the 10 dead innocents in Buffalo." Scott co-founded the New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland and later served as an advisor for Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. … [Read more...] about Pro-Trump pastor slams GOP for Rittenhouse sympathy amid Buffalo shooting
