RUSSIA is “indisputably” a bigger threat to the UK than Islamist extremists like ISIS, the new army chief has warned. Chief of the General Staff, Gen Mark Carleton-Smith, 54, believes the security landscape has changed as Russia is targeting the UK in unconventional ways such as cyber and space warfare, not just a military threat. Speaking during a visit to British troops in Estonia, he said: “Russia today indisputably represents a far greater threat to our national security than Islamic extremist threats such as al-Qaeda and Isil. “Russia has demonstrated that it is prepared to use military force to secure and expand its own national interests. The Russians seek to exploit vulnerability and weakness wherever they detect it.” He believes crushing defeats of ISIS and al-Qaeda mean the biggest threat to British security has changed. Cyber threats to national security
MINISTERS were accused of a “wholly inadequate” response to the threat of cyber warfare from Russia last night in a damning verdict by a top parliamentary committee. The influential Joint Committee on National Security Strategy (JCNSS) said the Government had failed to act with “a meaningful sense of purpose or urgency” to shut down the threat of cyber attacks on Britain’s critical national infrastructure (CNI). In a rebuke to the Prime Minister, the report concluded that “identifiable political leadership is lacking” on cyber security. The committee called on Theresa May to appoint a single cyber security minister in the Cabinet Office to take charge of the efforts to build national resilience. World International Relations Despite sweeping statements from President Donald Trump accusing China of election interference, new research from the Washington, D.C.-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) shows that over 80 percent of cybersecurity experts consider Russia the main threat to the 2018 midterm elections. The biggest risk experts identified is Russian-led online influence operations and espionage against political candidates, but at least one-third of the analysts surveyed claimed that Russia could also target voting systems and voter registration lists. Meanwhile, far fewer experts are concerned about Chinese influence operations. While exactly 81 percent of the experts surveyed said Russian influence operations are “the greatest cyber threat to U.S. elections”, only 10 percent said the same about Chinese influence operations. Iran came in a distant third, with only 2 percent of experts claiming that the Islamic Republic … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s Wrong: Russia’s, Not China’s, Influence Operations Are the “the Greatest Cyber Threat to U.S. Elections,” Experts Warn
