Sitting roughly 700 metres away from Chennai’s Island Grounds, the place where India’s first flight, a plane commandeered by Giacomo D’Angelis, took off in 1910, history enthusiast Ramanujar Moulana unveils many other not-so-secret tidbits about Chennai’s rich cultural history. Following the set of four heritage tours conducted in early 2022, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), along with Ramanujar’s organisation Cycling Yogis, is launching a second series of six themed tour trails, beginning on June 26. World Wars trail Prominent among these is the recently concluded World Wars trail, that revisits Madras’ tryst with the wars. “Lots of people aren’t aware of Chennai’s involvement in World Wars, so the World Wars trail will cover the Emden bombing plaque, air shelters used in the Second World War in Kasimedu, the Madras War Cemetery in Nandambakkam and the Victory War Memorial,” says Ramanujar. Woman with face tattoo says “racist” nightclub refused her entry
An Australian woman is blasting a nightclub that she claims denied her entry over facial tattoos that represent her cultural heritage. In a Facebook post on June 25, Moale James said she was turned away at the door of Hey Chica!, a Latin American club in Brisbane, Australia. The 23-year-old was going out with a group of friends for her partner's birthday. She had no problem entering multiple other clubs—until what she termed "discriminatory and racist" treatment at Hey Chica!. "The security guard said he wouldn't allow me in because of my face tattoos," she wrote. "I said these are cultural, are you still not going to let me in? No, you can't come into the venue." The facial tattoos that James calls "reva reva" are a marking of her indigenous Papua New Guinean heritage, she told local news outlets . The marks were handed down through generations—her great-grandmother had the same tattoos—and she got hers just before graduating university. Outraged, James said on Facebook … [Read more...] about Woman with face tattoo says “racist” nightclub refused her entry

British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed
Historic British-era Patna District Magistrate's office building, part of the centuries-old Collectorate campus, which was featured in key scenes in Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi' has been demolished, sending a wave of grief among heritage lovers and Gandhians. Bulldozers gnawed at the elegant two-storey main Patna Collectorate building, situated on the banks of the river Ganga, a couple of days ago, reducing it to a skeletal state. The building was felled as part of the redevelopment project of the Bihar government. On Wednesday, labourers carried away bricks from the mountains of rubble that lay deposited next to what remained of the old building, which once was the seat of the district administration and was said to have been constructed in the early 20th century. The building was also adorned with an ornate iron-made spiral staircase mounted on its western facade. Heritage lovers of the city had earlier appealed to the authorities to rescue its historical artefacts, such as … [Read more...] about British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed
The Powerful Authority of Cute Animals
More than likely than not, you’ve already been propositioned by the beckoning cat. Its barren, glimmering eyes are commonplace in the storefront windows of most American Chinatowns and many sushi restaurants—vacantly wooing passers-by on the street. You might also know this object as the maneki neko —a Japanese term that roughly translates into English as “beckoning cat.” This animal-shaped object comes in various sizes, and might be constructed from a host of materials: plaster, plastic, porcelain, vinyl. Its raised and beckoning paw, not waving “hello” but coaxing you to come a bit closer, may or may not be moving—robotically, hypnotically—back and forth. Typically, the beckoning cat will be white (sometimes calico) and chubby. It’s usually domesticated with a red collar, and clutching a shiny golden coin. The ubiquity of the beckoning cat is due, in no small part, to the fact that it’s alleged to have qualities that verge into the murky and obscure territory of the magical. Vampire-slaying kit from 1800s goes to auction
A vampire-slaying kit that belonged to a 19th century English lord who kept guns, crucifixes, holy water, and a wooden stake in case of an attack, is going under the hammer. The creepy wooden box of anti-vampire weapons was owned by Lord William Malcolm Hailey, a British peer and former British colonial administrator of India. The tools and holy objects are stamped with his initials and the lockable box contains his full name and address. It also features two brass crucifixes on the lid that act as a sliding secret locking device. Inside are more crucifixes, a matching pair of pistols, brass powder flask, holy water, Gothic Bible, wooden mallet, stake, brass candlesticks, rosary beads and Metropolitan police paperwork from the period. It is set to fetch between $2,400 to $3,600 when it is sold at Hansons Auctioneers. Auctioneer Charles Hanson said: "Items like this always capture the imagination of the world. "Belief in vampires, an undead creature said to need human blood … [Read more...] about Vampire-slaying kit from 1800s goes to auction
