STORM Florence has left 12 people dead and experts have warned the next few days could bring the most destructive round of flooding in North Carolina history. The deadly storm made landfall on the east coast of the US on Friday bringing with it "biblical" flooding on what's been described as a "thousand-year rain event". The slow-moving storm is heading west, but on Sunday it is due to turn north towards Ohio. Forecasters warned that rivers are swelling to record levels and thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate. Authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of up to 7,500 people living within a mile of a stretch of the Cape Fear River and the Little River, about 100 miles from the North Carolina coast. The evacuation zone included part of the city of Fayetteville, population 200,000. Tropical Storm Florence is expected to weaken into a depression soon but flash flooding and major river flooding are expected to continue over significant portions of the Carolinas.With rivers rising toward record levels, thousands of people were ordered evacuated for fear the next few days could bring the most destructive round of flooding in North Carolina history.The National Hurricane Center says excessive amounts of rain are still being dumped in North Carolina and the effect is expected to be "catastrophic." (AP) — The Latest on Florence (all times local): 8 p.m. The center of Tropical Storm Florence has moved into South Carolina, and both it and North Carolina continue to face powerful winds and catastrophic flooding. Florence’s top sustained winds remain at 70 mph (110 kph) as it crawls west at just 3 mph (6 kph). At 8 p.m. Friday, Florence was centered about 15 miles (25 kilometers) north-northeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and about 55 miles (90 kilometers) east-southeast of Florence, South Carolina. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 kilometers) from its center.
