Author Salman Rushdie was brutally stabbed on Friday prior to a lecture in New York state in front of a crowd of horrified onlookers. The motive for the attack is, thus far, unclear, but given that Rushdie spent nine years in hiding after Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa authorizing his murder over his authorship of the novel, The Satanic Verses —which the Ayatollah considered blasphemous—and that Rushdie was attacked just as he was about to give a speech, an effort to silence Rushdie permanently through violence seems likely. The message sent by a successful attack on Rushdie is loud and unmistakable: your hurtful speech is the equivalent of violence against me and my values, and you deserve violence in return. It’s a message intended not just for Rushdie, but for anyone who might be tempted to follow in his footsteps. When we began our careers in free speech advocacy in the early 2000s, the conflation of the expression of opinion with physical … [Read more...] about Salman Rushdie’s Stabbing Shows the Danger of Conflating Words With ‘Violence’

Ohio gunman appeared to threaten FBI after Trump home search
By MIKE BALSAMO and SAMANTHA HENDRICKSON COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A gunman who died in a shootout after trying to get inside the FBI’s Cincinnati office apparently went on social media and called for federal agents to be killed “on sight” following the search at former President Donald Trump’s home, a law enforcement official said. Federal investigators are examining social media accounts they believe are tied to the gunman, 42-year-old Ricky Shiffer, according to the official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. At least one of the messages on Trump’s Truth Social media platform appeared to have been posted after Shiffer tried to breach the FBI office. It read: “If you don’t hear from me, it is true I tried attacking the F.B.I.” Another message posted on the same site this week from @rickywshifferjr included a “call to arms” and urged people to “be ready for combat” after the FBI search at … [Read more...] about Ohio gunman appeared to threaten FBI after Trump home search

Op-Ed: Democrats try a new campaign strategy — getting things done
The most worried political junkies in America these days may be those never-Trump former Republicans who put their hopes in the Democratic Party. They’re terrified that Democrats are incapable of winning when and where it matters most. Right now that means every election in 2022 and 2024 that involves Donald Trump as an anti-democracy cheerleader or, worst case, as a candidate himself. I’m not saying my new ex-GOP friends should relax, because I understand their trepidation. The stakes, and Trump’s rhetoric, never stop escalating. The FBI execution of a search warrant at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home has unleashed outright threats of retaliation or violence , some from people who should know much, much better. At the same time, of the many weird dynamics this year, there is this one: Democrats have been acting like Republicans lately. They’ve been strategic, disciplined and tough — racking up accomplishments that will affect people’s lives, jobs and health; strengthen America, its … [Read more...] about Op-Ed: Democrats try a new campaign strategy — getting things done
What we know about Courtney Clenney, the OnlyFans model arrested for murder
OnlyFans and Instagram model Courtney Clenney was arrested on Tuesday for the murder of Christian Obumseli, her boyfriend of over two years, who was fatally stabbed on April 3. The 26-year-old Florida model, who on the day of Obumseli's death called 911 to report that her boyfriend had been stabbed during a violent fight between the two, has now been charged with second-degree murder, despite police at the time ruling the incident self-defense. The arrest and the charge "completely shocked" Clenney's defense lawyer Frank Prieto, who told the Miami Herald that he looked forward to "clearing her name in court." According to the Miami-Dade County's arrest warrant shared with Newsweek , the initial conclusions reached by police were later reviewed after investigators received the medical examiner's findings, which concluded that Obumseli, a 27-year-old cryptocurrency investor, had died of a knife wound that punctured the subclavian artery in the right side of his chest. … [Read more...] about What we know about Courtney Clenney, the OnlyFans model arrested for murder
Never-ending fight: On free speech vs religious and caste groups
In quashing a criminal case against actor Suriya and director T.J. Gnanavel , the Madras High Court has spared them the ordeal of facing vexatious proceedings for allegedly insulting a section of society in the acclaimed film Jai Bhim. The FIR cited Section 295A of the IPC, a provision that makes it a crime to commit “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings” on the basis of a complaint that the film insulted the Vanniyar community. A magistrate had forwarded the complaint to the police for the registration of a first information report by concluding that it disclosed a “cognisable offence”. The High Court has rightly concluded that the magistrate had acted mechanically as the order did not even mention what offence was made out in the complaint. In this case, it is quite strange that a perceived insult to a caste was seen as outraging “religious” feelings. It indicates the perfunctory manner in which caste and religion can be conflated with one another by … [Read more...] about Never-ending fight: On free speech vs religious and caste groups
Pseudonym, 56 Homes Over 6 Months & Loss of Colleagues: How A 33-Yr-Old Fatwa Changed Salman Rushdie’s Life
Thirty-three years after a fatwa was issued against him by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, sentencing him to death for his 1988 novel ‘The Satanic Verses’, Salman Rushdie was brutally attacked on Friday, with his spokesman saying the controversial author was on a ventilator, will likely lose one eye and his liver was “stabbed and damaged”. In the religious decree, Khomeini urged “Muslims of the world rapidly to execute the author and the publishers of the book” so that “no one will any longer dare to offend the sacred values of Islam.” A $2.8-million bounty was put on the writer’s head and the then 89-year-old Khomeini said anyone who was killed trying to carry out the death sentence should be considered a “martyr” who would go to paradise. The fatwa changed Rushdie’s life forever, forcing the author to go into hiding. Over the next 13 years, Rushdie adopted the pseudonym of Joseph Anton and moved between safe houses, changing base 56 times in the first six … [Read more...] about Pseudonym, 56 Homes Over 6 Months & Loss of Colleagues: How A 33-Yr-Old Fatwa Changed Salman Rushdie’s Life
The Absurd Argument Against Making Trump Obey the Law
This article has been updated to include new information about a man who attempted to breach an F.B.I. field office. It took many accidents, catastrophes, misjudgments and mistakes for Donald Trump to win the presidency in 2016. Two particularly important errors came from James Comey, then the head of the F.B.I., who was excessively worried about what Trump’s supporters would think of the resolution of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. First, in July 2016, Comey broke protocol to give a news conference in which he criticized Clinton even while announcing that she’d committed no crime. He reportedly did this because he wanted to protect the reputation of the F.B.I. from inevitable right-wing claims that the investigation had been shut down for political reasons. Then, on Oct. 28, just days before the election, Comey broke protocol again, telling Congress that the Clinton investigation had been reopened because of emails found on the laptop of the former … [Read more...] about The Absurd Argument Against Making Trump Obey the Law
