Cyberattack forces Iran steel company to halt production
One of Iran’s major steel companies said on June 27 it was forced to halt production after being hit by a cyberattack, apparently marking one of the biggest such assaults on the country’s strategic industrial sector in recent memory. The state-owned Khuzestan Steel Company said experts had determined the plant had to stop work until further notice “due to technical problems” following “cyberattacks.” The company’s website was down on Monday. The company’s CEO, Amin Ebrahimi, claimed that Khuzestan Steel managed to thwart the cyberattack and prevent structural damage to production lines that would impact supply chains and customers. “Fortunately with time and awareness, the attack was unsuccessful,” the semiofficial Mehr news agency quoted Ebrahimi as saying, adding that he expected the company’s website to be restored and everything to return to “normal” by the end of Monday. A local news channel, Jamaran, reported that the attack failed because the factory happened to be … [Read more...] about Cyberattack forces Iran steel company to halt production
The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Just six weeks before the 2020 presidential election — game day for vote-counting bureaucrats — Tina Peters was so proud of her operation at the Mesa County clerk’s office that she invited a film crew in to show it off. There’s no chance of mishap here, she boasted. “The Russians can’t hack into and start casting votes for someone,” she said, as a few in the office chuckled. By May 2021, it was Ms. Peters, not the Russians, who had helped engineer an audacious breach of voting machines, according to an indictment charging her with seven felonies. Ms. Peters arranged to copy sensitive election software from county voting machines in an attempt to prove the 2020 presidential election was rigged, according to court records. Prosecutors said she committed identity theft and criminal impersonation, and violated the duties of her office in the process. Ms. Peters has pleaded not guilty. The strange tale of Tina Peters — a once-ordinary public servant … [Read more...] about The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
Webcamming: The sex work revolution that no one is willing to talk about
The development of the internet has completely transformed the way we do business; and the “oldest profession” is no exception. In a world of online chatrooms, webcam performers can market anything from conversation to explicit sex acts. And unlike pornography or prostitution, there are virtually no laws regulating this form of sex work. Webcamming is an easy market to enter. All it takes is a computer, a decent webcam, access to a high-speed internet connection and a webcam hosting site. The hours are flexible, the working environment is safe and the salary can be very rewarding. The majority of performers are women, but there are also male and transgender performers. On sites such as Chaturbate and MyFreeCams, a tipping system operates in public chatrooms. Here, payment is voluntary, and performers are tipped for performing sexual and non-sexual acts. This makes a show profitable for the performer, at a relatively low cost to the viewer. Recommended Mother … [Read more...] about Webcamming: The sex work revolution that no one is willing to talk about
From great resignation to great rethink
OFF the back of Covid-19, the great resignation is here to stay – with CEOs ranking a labour and skills shortage as the number one external issue expected to influence or disrupt their business strategy in the next 12 months. Every nation and region faces different labour trends and challenges. Workers everywhere are interested in exploring alternatives, under differing circumstances. For Malaysia, 85% of companies are focusing on internal mobility versus external hiring, with a focus on soft skills, including problem solving, communication and strategic thinking skills. Recent research also suggests that women, non-white employees, and those in lower-wage jobs are the workers most likely to consider making job changes. Both Deloitte Global’s Women at Work study and more recently, our economics team study findings support this, indicating that globally, the pandemic had a disproportionate adverse effect on women. Whether driven by a wave of restlessness, fresh opportunities, or … [Read more...] about From great resignation to great rethink
Government ‘misleading’ over role in rail strikes, legal advice suggests
The Government is being accused of “misleading” the public by insisting it does not have a role in negotiations to resolve the bitter rail dispute. The TUC said an independent legal opinion undermined the Government’s claims that the dispute is just between the train operators and unions. The union organisation said the legal opinion it has received clarifies that the contracts between rail operators and Government allow the Government to apply financial sanctions if operators do not follow its directions in the current dispute. The legal opinion, commissioned by the TUC from Michael Ford QC of Old Square Chambers, advises that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has “very extensive powers” over what can be agreed between rail operators and unions, and “very significant contractual power” to direct how industrial disputes are handled, the TUC said. Recommended By-elections show voters have run out of patience with Boris Johnson Rail operators are … [Read more...] about Government ‘misleading’ over role in rail strikes, legal advice suggests
At this school for the deaf, the alumni are a source of inspiration
Since the 1990s, Balavidyalaya - The School for the Young Deaf Children in Shastri Nagar, Adyar, has been diligently following a practice: Maintaining what is called a “Cumulative Book” for each student. Each of these Books would primarily track the pitter-patter footsteps of a tiny tot, as Balavidyalaya is an early intervention centre admitting hearing-impaired children below three years of age. Once the children complete the early intervention programme they are moved to the pre school programme. However, the footsteps are followed even after they get firmer. Meera Suresh, honorary vice-principal, Balavidyalaya, notes that the “Cumulative Book” has complete history of a child while they were being taught at Balavidyalaya, which includes the progresses they made, and also lists their achievements after they had left the school. For this reason, the school stays in touch with the parents. “We have to make a little extra effort sometimes to call a parent and ask for updates … [Read more...] about At this school for the deaf, the alumni are a source of inspiration

From Semiconductor to Gaming, Applications of 5G Will be Huge in India
Since finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement of 5G rollout by private telecom operators in this year’s Budget, speculations have been made on how the technology would change the digital landscape of India. There is a clear demand for improved and better infrastructure related to the 5G rollout. But in the 5G era, things cannot stay the same as they were in the 4G period. For example, to lay fibre or put up other infrastructure, telecom carriers must pay different amounts of money in different states. But most of the time, clearance for infrastructure deployment takes a longer time. So, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working on a nationwide right of way (RoW) site for speedier infra approvals to ensure that these issues do not arise with 5G. 5G and Semiconductor Recently in a report released by the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), it was predicted that the introduction of 5G in India will raise demand for semiconductors. … [Read more...] about From Semiconductor to Gaming, Applications of 5G Will be Huge in India
‘LeT handlers guided attackers watching Mumbai attack on TV’
Watching the 2008 Mumbai carnage live on TV from Pakistan, terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) handlers guided the attackers on phone and even asked them to change tactics to challenge the advancing commandos. The strategy followed during the 60-hour siege of Mumbai emerged during the testimony of the 26/11 co-accused David Headley in a Chicago District Court on the third day of the trial of his childhood friend and Pakistani-Canadian Tawahhur Rana. Rana has been slapped with a dozen charges in connection with the November 2008 attack in which 166 persons were killed, while Headley, a Pakistani-American and a star prosecution witness, has pleaded guilty. Headley told the court that his LeT handler Sajid Mir was in Karachi during the Mumbai attack. Sajid Mir told Headley that a couple of people were with him. Sajid Mir was in contact with the attackers via phone and he was watching TV coverage of the siege and seeing what was going on in India, he said. Sajid Mir was praised by … [Read more...] about ‘LeT handlers guided attackers watching Mumbai attack on TV’
