United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths
The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 hit 1 million on Monday, a once-unimaginable figure that only hints at the multitudes of loved ones and friends staggered by grief and frustration. The confirmed number of dead is equivalent to a 9/11 attack every day for 336 days. It is roughly equal to how many Americans died in the Civil War and World War II combined. It’s as if Boston and Pittsburgh were wiped out. It is hard to imagine a million people plucked from this earth, said Jennifer Nuzzo, who leads a new pandemic center at the Brown University School of Public Health in Providence, Rhode Island. Its still happening and we are letting it happen. Some of those left behind say they cannot return to normal. They replay their loved ones' voicemail messages. Or watch old videos to see them dance. When other people say they are done with the virus, they bristle with anger or ache in silence. 'Normal.' I hate that word, said Julie Wallace, 55, of Elyria, Ohio, who lost her husband to … [Read more...] about United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths
COVID-19 Crisis: CII Calls for Strongest National Steps, Curbs on Economic Activity
New Delhi: Industry body CII has urged the government to take “strongest” national steps including curtailing economic activity to contain the spike in COVID-19 cases in the country. CII President Uday Kotak has asked for highest-level response measures to address the rising wave of COVID-19 cases, as currently safeguarding lives is key to cut the transmission links. “The healthcare infrastructure and supply build-up are being undertaken on an emergency basis by the governments at the centre and states, but will take time. “At this critical juncture when the toll of lives is rising, CII urges the strongest national steps including curtailing economic activity to reduce suffering,” the President has said in a statement. The chamber said that the current pace of daily caseloads, the requirement for hospital beds and ICU beds, oxygen, and medicines will continue to escalate. “Healthcare and frontline workers are giving their best efforts to tackle the influx of patients, but it may … [Read more...] about COVID-19 Crisis: CII Calls for Strongest National Steps, Curbs on Economic Activity
Lacking vaccines, North Korea battles Covid-19 with antibiotics and home remedies
SEOUL, May 16 (Reuters): Standing tall in bright red hazmat suits, five North Korean health workers stride towards an ambulance to do battle with a Covid-19 outbreak that - in the presumed absence of vaccines - the country is using antibiotics and home remedies to treat. The isolated state is one of only two countries yet to begin a vaccination campaign and, until last week, had insisted it was COVID-free. Now it is mobilizing forces including the army and a public information campaign to combat what authorities have acknowledged is an "explosive" outbreak. In an interview on state television on Monday, Vice Minister of Public Health Kim Hyong Hun said the country had switched from a quarantine to a treatment system to handle the hundreds of thousands of suspected "fever" cases reported each day. The broadcaster showed footage of the hazmat team, and masked workers opening windows, cleaning desks and machines and spraying disinfectant. To treat Covid and its symptoms, state … [Read more...] about Lacking vaccines, North Korea battles Covid-19 with antibiotics and home remedies

Emerging markets: Philippine stocks posts best session in two months; Asian stocks rise even as weak China data casts gloom
MANILA, May 16 (Reuters): Emerging stock markets in Asia kick-started the week on a firmer footing, even as shockingly weak data from China stoked further concerns about a slowdown in the world's second-largest economy. Philippine stocks closed 1.9% higher to record their best session in two months. That follows five straight sessions of losses and a 5.6% decline last week. Data released last Thursday showed the Philippine economy grew at a better-than-expected 8.3% in the first quarter, increasing the likelihood of a rate hike to tackle inflation as early as the next central bank meeting on May 19. Shares in India, which rose more than 1% in early trade, pared gains to be up 0.3% after five consecutive weeks of losses. Taiwanese stocks advanced 0.4%. Equity and currency markets in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia were closed for holidays. Singapore's stock market was also closed. The Indian rupee did not trade for the day. Economic activity in China cooled sharply in April … [Read more...] about Emerging markets: Philippine stocks posts best session in two months; Asian stocks rise even as weak China data casts gloom
COVID-19 vaccination for adults: 16 districts in Karnatakaachieve 100% second-dose coverage
Sixteen districts in Karnataka have achieved 100% second-dose coverage, while 14 have crossed 95% coverage as of Sunday. Overall, 99% of the adult population in Karnataka is now fully vaccinated. These 16 districts include Bengaluru Rural, Kodagu, Mandya, Hassan, Chickballapur, Kolar, and almost all north Karnataka districts. From 51% on November 16 last year, the second-dose coverage in the State shot up to cross 80% on January 6 this year. It took over a month to cover another 10% and cross 90% by February 10. Subsequently, the second-dose vaccination slowed down and touched 99% only on May 15. The first-dose coverage has stood at 102%, exceeding the target population of 4.89 crore. Officials said this is because the target population is only an estimate of the 2011 census. According to data from CoWIN and the State Health Department, the second-dose coverage in 16 districts is above the State average of 99%. While Kolar and Bidar have achieved 106% coverage, Gadag has … [Read more...] about COVID-19 vaccination for adults: 16 districts in Karnatakaachieve 100% second-dose coverage
The tantalizing possibilities of the Knicks’ best-case lottery scenario
It’s always dangerous to get conclusive about a draft class before the picks are called, let alone before the players step on the court, but the preliminary consensus among scouts and experts is that 2022 is top heavy. Specifically, there are four players that sit as the cream. So for the Knicks, who enter the draft lottery at No. 11, the drawing of Ping Pong balls Tuesday night in Chicago is consequential. Potentially franchise altering. There is a decent enough chance for them to crack the top-4 (9.4%) to pay attention, and the reaction of the always demonstrative William Wesley, who is sitting for the Knicks on the dais , will be worth a view regardless of the outcome. And if the Knicks’ lottery luck changes and the franchise moves up in the lottery for the first time since 1985, here’s a breakdown of the four prospective rewards (we’re ignoring that the team could also use such a lucrative pick to trade for a star. Ahem, Donovan Mitchell): JABARI SMITH JR. AGE: … [Read more...] about The tantalizing possibilities of the Knicks’ best-case lottery scenario

Good things seem to happen to Daisy Edgar-Jones while she’s busy doing something else. Her breakout role as Marianne in the popular Hulu miniseries “Normal People" came about while she was on another production. She read the book in between takes and filmed her audition on set. Several years later, she was on that same set when she found out that she had a shot at starring in the big screen adaptation of Delia Owens’ “ Where the Crawdads Sing ” (in theaters July 15). “It was so wild to me that they were thinking of me for it,” Edgar-Jones said last week from London . “I think I was surprised to be in consideration considering the popularity of the book and just how important it was.” “Where the Crawdads Sing" is about a girl named Kya who grows up alone in the marshes of North Carolina after her family abandons her.
