Over 1,000 beds allocated in Vellore, nearby districts for COVID-19 patients
With the sudden surge in the daily cases of COVID-19, the district administrations of Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Tirupattur have allocated more than 1,000 beds with adequate oxygen-supported beds and ICU beds to take care of the affected people, with a team of medical staff, on Thursday. Vellore has allotted the highest number of beds 500, followed by Ranipet (350). Tiruvannamalai and Tirupattur have 200 beds each. In other words, the government taluk hospital in each block, on an average, has at least 10 beds. “We have only three cases admitted in hospital in the district. Most of the cases are under home isolation,” R. Selvakumar, Deputy Director of Health Services (DDHS), Tiruvannamalai, told The Hindu . Health officials said that the surge in cases was mainly due to the floating population, especially those travelling for work and studies to big cities like Chennai, Bengaluru and Coimbatore. Screening has been stepped up with more people being tested in these districts … [Read more...] about Over 1,000 beds allocated in Vellore, nearby districts for COVID-19 patients
As G7 Nations Come Together to Corner Russia, PM Modi Bats for Dialogue and Diplomacy
Six of the G7 countries are members of NATO, while the seventh, Japan, is dependent on its defence on the United States. All, including Japan, can be broadly classified as the West. If the narrative in recent years has been that political and economic power has decisively shifted towards Asia and the West no longer dominates the world as it did traditionally, that recognition seems to be missing from the inordinately long communiqué that the G7 summit in Germany has issued. It is imperial in tone, carrying a sense that the G7 has the power to decide and dispense. After the 2008 financial crisis the G7 led by the US felt the need to enlist the cooperation of major economic powers outside the West to stabilise the global financial system through coordination of national policies. Besides India, China, the second largest economy, was included in a G20, which was raised from the existing Finance Minister to Summit level. Today, China is treated as an adversary, and the harshness of G7 … [Read more...] about As G7 Nations Come Together to Corner Russia, PM Modi Bats for Dialogue and Diplomacy

‘I tried Nigella Lawson’s 42p Marmite pasta for first time – then she messaged me’
Marmite: you either love it or hate it or so the spread's advertising campaign famously claims. Well, the yeast-flavoured food is dividing opinions once again thanks to none other than Nigella Lawson. The celebrity chef sparked a fiery debate about cooking with Marmite after she incorporated it into a spaghetti recipe. Originally featured in her 2010 book Kitchen, the now infamous dish has become an internet sensation. It sparked outrage in 2020 when pasta lovers branded the mix of ingredients "an abomination", and it is doing the rounds online again - as nobody can quite decide what to think. Eager to see what all the fuss was about, Mirror journalist Amber O'Connor gave the recipe a try. Here's what she thought... Get the news you want straight to your inbox. Plane passenger says Jet2 ‘did them dirty’ with ’embarrassing’ sandwich they served
A passenger slammed Jet2 after the airline served her a sandwich that looked very different to the one that had been advertised. Sharing her disappointment, the woman posted a video to TikTok captioned: "Jet2 did us dirty with our food on the plane." In the short clip, the passenger then shows the menu versus the sandwich she claims she received. On the one hand, the first sandwich pictured looks full to the brim. The second, which had just a smattering of food inside, is hard to recognise as the same order. Posted by @teganinsleyox , the passenger implored the airline to "please explain this." The woman shared a photo of the sandwich on the menu ( Image: teganinsleyox/Tiktok) The woman says she received this sandwich instead ( Image: teganinsleyox/Tiktok) Get the news you want straight to your inbox. No star, no problem: Rogue planets could incubate life for billions of years
Scientists once assumed that the best place to look for extraterrestrial life would be planets within their star ’s habitable, or “Goldilocks” zone, that narrow range of orbits where water remains liquid on a planet ’s surface. Around our Sun , the habitable zone stretches from just outside the orbit of Venus to just outside the orbit of Mars, with Earth squarely in the middle. But new research suggests scientists searching for habitable planets should look outside habitable zones — way outside. In a paper published Monday in the journal Nature astronomy, researchers from the universities of Bern and Zurich conclude that certain super Earth exoplanets — rocky planets between 2 and 10 times Earth’s mass — could remain habitable for forms of life at distances 10 times that of Earth from the Sun. Some planets could even remain habitable for tens of billions of years after getting expelled from their solar system, becoming strange oases wandering interstellar … [Read more...] about No star, no problem: Rogue planets could incubate life for billions of years
Astronomers discover closest rocky ‘super Earth’ planets yet, per Nasa
Nasa ’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or Tess , recently spotted two new rocky, Earth-like planets around nearby stars, among the closest ever discovered near our Solar System . The two exoplanets orbit a red dwarf star just 33 light years away from Earth known as HD 260655. The planets derive their name from their star: HD 260655 b and HD 260655 c. The planets are “super Earths,” rocky planets like our own, but somewhat larger, with HD 260655 b coming in at 1.2 times the size of Earth and HD 260655 c at 1.5 times the size of our planet. The planets were discovered in Tess data by an international team of astronomers led by Rafael Luque of the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia, Spain, and the University of Chicago, and the discovery was first presented earlier in June at the 240th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Pasadena California. Launched in 2018, Tess hunts the sky for exoplanets using the transit method, that is, staring at … [Read more...] about Astronomers discover closest rocky ‘super Earth’ planets yet, per Nasa
China has a new mission to look for alien life
China is launching a new mission to look for potentially habitable alien worlds. The mission, called the Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey (CHES), will take ultraprecise measurements of the movement of stars and compare whether they are under the influence of a gravitational pull; if they are, it is more likely they have exoplanets orbiting around them. This mission would also be able to provide estimates of the masses of exoplanets and the distance between them and their host stars, which could provide more information about whether these planets could home life. Currently, the mission is targeting 100 stars similar to our own Sun within a radius of 10 parsecs (33 light years) of our own planet. "CHES would be a fabulous addition to exoplanet exploration," said Elizabeth Tasker, an associate professor at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, told Space .
