An Asian man assaulted in the drive-thru of a McDonald's last Saturday said the man who allegedly attacked him hurled racist insults at him. The incident comes as the United States has seen a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes in recent years. Shang Wang drove to the fast food restaurant in Rockville, Maryland, when he passed by a red Nissan SUV that was idling and blocking the drive-thru from other customers, which prompted Wang to drive around the car to order his Diet Coke, local news station WJLA-TV reported. Wang said that he "didn't think anything of it" when he drove around the car, but he soon heard "constant honking" from behind him, adding that he was confused and bewildered. "And then I hear these racial comments. 'Go back to China! Hey, you Chinese MF'er!' And I look up, this guy is at my window and he spits through my window, and the spit lands on my face," he told the news station. Wang then got out of his vehicle to confront the man, who then allegedly began … [Read more...] about Asian man assaulted at McDonald’s drive-thru in “fit of rage”: Police

New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe
New York shut down Olivet University's operations in the state, saying the Evangelical Christian college was still largely run by a group of David Jang disciples linked to a 2018 criminal conspiracy. Jang, a Korean American cleric, founded Olivet in 2000. His followers are now in the crosshairs of Department of Homeland Security investigators probing whether the university was part of a scheme to launder money for criminals in China and the United States. The stinging rebuke by New York's Deputy Commissioner of Education cited "a pattern of mismanagement" at the university and its ties to "criminal activity" in ending Olivet's authorization to operate credit-bearing courses or programs in New York. (Olivet's campuses in Tennessee and California are likely to also come under scrutiny, and DHS may revoke Olivet's authorization to enroll international students.) The education department's decision to close the Olivet campuses in Manhattan and Dover, New York, after a two-year … [Read more...] about New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe

Giuliani associate Parnas sentenced to 20 months in prison
Lev Parnas , an associate of Rudy Giuliani who was a figure in President Donald Trump 's first impeachment investigation, was sentenced Wednesday to a year and eight months in prison for fraud and campaign finance crimes. Parnas, who had helped Giuliani connect with Ukrainian figures as part of a campaign to dig up dirt on President Joe Biden's son, had sought leniency on the grounds that he’d helped the Congressional probe. But prosecutors said the Soviet-born businessman’s aid was in response to a subpoena and deserved little credit. Instead, they asked the judge to focus on a jury’s finding that Parnas used the riches of a wealthy Russian to make illegal donations to politicians who might aid the launch of a legal recreational-marijuana business. Prosecutors had asked that Parnas be sentenced to more than six years. Dowry: what the data says and what it doesn’t
Last week, a Bench of the Supreme Court >instructed the country’s police to not make automatic arrests in dowry harassment cases without first ascertaining viability. “The fact that Section 498-A is a cognizable and non-bailable offence has lent it a dubious place of pride amongst the provisions that are used as weapons rather than shield by disgruntled wives. The simplest way to harass is to get the husband and his relatives arrested under this provision,” the court observed. The order, and its phrasing, has led to a fair amount of outrage; both from men rights’ activists for whom the misuse of 498-A has long been a rallying point and from some women’s rights activists who have argued that popular male perception – and the Court – overstates the problem. But what does the data say? The Court referred to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data to show that 498-A cases are growing very fast. Others, like >Sahil Bhalla at the news website Scroll , have attempted to show … [Read more...] about Dowry: what the data says and what it doesn’t
