The attack on a nuclear power plant by Russia is "suicidal" and risks sparking a devastating disaster, the UN has warned. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on inspectors to be given access to a nuclear plant after the "suicidal" attacks. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station was hit by shelling over the weekend, but is reported to be operating "in normal mode" according to Russian occupiers. Ukraine and Moscow have blamed each other for the dangerous attacks on the plant and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it "Russian nuclear terror". Russia accused Ukraine of blasting the site with a rocket launcher, hitting administrative buildings nearby. Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said: "I'm extremely concerned by the shelling at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which underlines the very real risk of a nuclear disaster that could threaten public health and the environment in … [Read more...] about Nuclear power plant attack ‘suicidal’ and risks sparking devastating disaster

Russians shell nuclear power plant twice within hours: Energoatom official
Ukraine's state nuclear power company says that Russian forces opened fire at the Zaporizhzhia energy plant, raising the risk of fire and radioactive substance leaks. Energoatom said in a Telegram post on Friday that Russian forces opened fire twice within a matter of hours against the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, located on the Dnipro River in a southern region that has seen heavy fighting during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. While Russia has accused Ukraine of attacking the plant, international monitors now worry that the conflict will produce a nuclear disaster. The second round of shots came in the form of rocket-propelled grenades that struck Zaporizhzhia "near one of the power units where the nuclear reactor is located," Energoatom said in its post. The attack seriously damaged the plant's nitrogen-oxygen station and "combined auxiliary building." "There are risks of hydrogen leakage and sputtering of radioactive substances. Fire danger is high," the company said. … [Read more...] about Russians shell nuclear power plant twice within hours: Energoatom official
Russian general threatens to bomb nuclear power plant: “We warned” you
A major Russian general said that nuclear warfare is on the table in the ongoing war with Ukraine, ushering in a new heightened sense of security nearly six months into the conflict. Major General Valery Vasiliev, according to a Telegram post published on Monday by Ukrainian state nuclear agency Energoatom, said that Russia has mined the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and that he has command of the garrison. Vasiliev bluntly stated that "there will be either Russian land or a scorched desert." "We do not hide it from the enemy. We warned them," Vasiliev said, according to the post. "The enemy knows that the station will be either Russian or no one's. We are ready for the consequences of this step. And you, warriors-liberators, must understand that we have no other way. And if there is the toughest order, we must fulfill it with honor!" The threats have reportedly been confirmed by Ukrainian officials—including Andriy Yusov, press representative for Ukraine's Ministry of … [Read more...] about Russian general threatens to bomb nuclear power plant: “We warned” you
State TV Accused of Editing in Black Smoke Over Nuclear Power Plant
German state television has been accused of editing in black clouds of smoke over a nuclear power station in a report on the ongoing energy crisis. State-owned broadcaster Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) has come under fire for an image used in a recent broadcast on the continued use of nuclear power in Germany, with many accusing the TV station of editing in black clouds in post over an image of a nuclear power station. With an ongoing energy crisis partly brought about by the country’s climate crazy agenda causing havoc in the country, many are now calling for a planned decommissioning of the country’s remaining nuclear power stations — which are due to be turned off by the end of the year — to be halted in order to help alleviate the situation. In a report on this question aired by ZDF however, according to an article published by Bild , the broadcaster appears to have edited in post an image of a nuclear power station to include black clouds, despite such stations … [Read more...] about State TV Accused of Editing in Black Smoke Over Nuclear Power Plant
Scholz opens door to extend nuclear power
Yann Schreiber and Sebastien Ash (Agence France-Presse) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany ● Fri, August 5 2022 German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has raised the possibility of keeping nuclear plants going as he accused Russia of blocking the delivery of a key turbine in order to throttle gas supplies to Europe. The continent's biggest economy has been scrambling for energy sources to fill a gap left by a reduction in gas supplies from Moscow. Standing next to the turbine, Scholz said on Wednesday that extending the lifetime of Germany's three remaining nuclear power plants "can make sense". to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged access to our events and programs Subscription to our newsletters We accept Register to read 3 premium articles for free Already … [Read more...] about Scholz opens door to extend nuclear power
Federal bill seen as spark for Colorado’s renewable energy industry, economy
Federal legislation that would invest about $375 billion to deal with climate change could mean “gigawatts and gigawatts” of new renewable energy and thousands of new jobs in Colorado and across the county, industry representatives say. The bill that passed the Senate along partisan lines Sunday is on its way to the U.S. House, which is expected to vote on it Friday. The measure, called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, would extend solar-energy tax credits for a decade and provide incentives to expand domestic production of solar panels and other equipment. “For the first time in our history as an industry, we have a clear, decade-long and firm policy that allows business owners to evaluate where they’re at and make investments accordingly,” said Mike Kruger, president and CEO of the trade group Colorado Solar and Storage Association. Without the bill, the investment tax credit for solar will expire in 2024. With the bill, Kruger predicted that “gigawatts and gigawatts” of … [Read more...] about Federal bill seen as spark for Colorado’s renewable energy industry, economy
Climate Crazies Launch Legal Assault Against Plan for New Nuclear Plant
Despite the ongoing energy crisis, climate crazies have launched a legal challenge aimed at preventing the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the UK. Legal proceedings have been launched against the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the United Kingdom by a number of climate crazy activists who do not see the project as being green enough. Together Against Sizewell C (TASC), the group that has launched the legal action with the backing of green agenda-loving NGO Friends of the Earth, is challenging the construction of the Suffolk despite the ongoing energy crisis in the UK. According to a report on the matter by The Guardian , the group is challenging the government plan on the basis that there is not a secure water supply for the plant currently on site, while also arguing that nuclear energy as a whole is inappropriate in the modern age. “Even to consider building a £20bn-plus nuclear power plant without first securing a water supply is a measure of … [Read more...] about Climate Crazies Launch Legal Assault Against Plan for New Nuclear Plant
India should use small modular reactors to meet energy demands: NITI Aayog member V. K. Saraswat
NITI Aayog member and scientist V. K. Saraswat on Sunday suggested that the government should focus on setting up small modular reactors as it would help meet India’s energy needs and also in replacing aging thermal power plants. Saraswat also said nuclear power plant projects which have been set up under the fleet mode production, should be accelerated, so that India is able to meet base load requirements at the earliest. “We are suggesting that in future we should go for small modular reactors which will be able to meet this (energy) requirements in a distributed manner.” “And we are also thinking that it will be the best approach for replacing the aging thermal power plants,” he told PTI in an interview. Small modular reactors (SMRs) are advanced nuclear reactors that have a power capacity of up to 300 MW(e) per unit, which is about one-third of the generating capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors. Under the fleet mode, a nuclear power plant is expected to be … [Read more...] about India should use small modular reactors to meet energy demands: NITI Aayog member V. K. Saraswat
Ukraine warns hit to nuclear plant could equal “use of an atomic bomb”
Ukraine warned that Russian strikes against a nuclear power plant could equate to "the use of an atomic bomb" after Russian shelling caused damage to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) on Friday. Russia launched its invasion of the Eastern European country in late February, claiming it was to "liberate" the separatist Donbas region and rid the Ukrainian government of Nazis —even though Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is Jewish. More than five months into the war, the stronger-than-anticipated Ukrainian defense has forced fighting to be concentrated in Eastern Ukraine, which is home to Europe's largest nuclear facility, the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Concerns the Russian military may cause damage to the plant, therefore raising the risk of a nuclear crisis, have been ongoing since March , when Moscow's troops seized the plant and shelling began. These concerns were renewed Friday when troops allegedly opened fire at the plant again. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign … [Read more...] about Ukraine warns hit to nuclear plant could equal “use of an atomic bomb”
Germany Rushes End Nuclear, France Breaks Rules to Keep Them Open
Germany can’t close its nuclear plants quick enough despite the surging energy crisis gripping Europe, but France is working hard to keep theirs online, temporarily setting aside green rules to keep the reactors working. France has given exemptions to some nuclear plants to avoid heat-related environmental restrictions that would entail load reductions in the present summer season weather in a bid to keep electricity production as high as possible as Europe plunges into an energy crisis. Germany Phasing Out Nuclear Power During Energy Crisis Labelled ‘Complete Nonsense’ https://t.co/BJFqXhGyJ5 — Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) June 21, 2022 Nuclear plants which use river water for cooling are normally bound by rules which prevent the water being put back into the river from being too warm, so not to harm marine wildlife. If those limits are reached, the nuclear plants have their processes slowed: they produce less heat, but also less electricity. Yet because of … [Read more...] about Germany Rushes End Nuclear, France Breaks Rules to Keep Them Open
