The supposed “land of the free” is the latest of a growing list of countries who have infantilised women, as no longer having the right to control their own bodies, thanks to the overturning of Roe v Wade . This once-landmark decision making it clear that the US constitution protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose an abortion has been eschewed in favour of individual states deciding their own abortion laws. As a barrister, I am sometimes criticised for supposedly “not respecting” the integrity of the rule of law. Well, it is my view that the criminalisation of abortion shows that we are not all accountable to the same laws. The law is made by men, for men: to control, dominate and subjugate women. The law has no place regulating our bodies. Yet thanks to Roe v Wade , women are now seen as little more than “living wombs”. This week, 13 US states made abortion illegal – and that figure is predicted to rise to 26 out of the 50 states. The ruling … [Read more...] about Women are now seen as little more than ‘living wombs’

As G7 Nations Come Together to Corner Russia, PM Modi Bats for Dialogue and Diplomacy
Six of the G7 countries are members of NATO, while the seventh, Japan, is dependent on its defence on the United States. All, including Japan, can be broadly classified as the West. If the narrative in recent years has been that political and economic power has decisively shifted towards Asia and the West no longer dominates the world as it did traditionally, that recognition seems to be missing from the inordinately long communiqué that the G7 summit in Germany has issued. It is imperial in tone, carrying a sense that the G7 has the power to decide and dispense. After the 2008 financial crisis the G7 led by the US felt the need to enlist the cooperation of major economic powers outside the West to stabilise the global financial system through coordination of national policies. Besides India, China, the second largest economy, was included in a G20, which was raised from the existing Finance Minister to Summit level. Today, China is treated as an adversary, and the harshness of G7 … [Read more...] about As G7 Nations Come Together to Corner Russia, PM Modi Bats for Dialogue and Diplomacy
Indian Boxers Simranjit Kaur and Ananta Chopade Off to Winning Starts in Elorda Cup
Indian boxers Simranjit Kaur and Ananta Chopade kickstarted their campaigns with contrasting victories in the opening round at the inaugural edition of Elorda Cup in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan on Wednesday. The 2018 World Championships bronze medallists Simranjit lived up to favourite’s tag with a dominating start in the tournament. She pulled off a comprehensive win against the local boxer Ischanova Nazym by unanimous decision in the women’s 60kg encounter. Whereas, in the country’s first bout of the day, Ananta dealt with a stiff challenge from the Mongolian pugilist Dorjnyambuu Ganbold. However, the Indian kept his cool during an intensely fought men’s 54kg thriller and eventually managed to tilt the result in his favour by a narrow 3-2 verdict. Rick Astley looks back at “Never Gonna Give You Up” turning thirty-five
The first time British singer Rick Astley was introduced to what would become his smash pop hit, 1987's "Never Gonna Give You Up," was when Mike Stock of the production team Stock Aitken Waterman sang the song's melody and worked out the chords in the recording studio. At the time, Astley was not only a signed artist to SAW but also served as their tea boy—a sort of apprentice or intern who did odd jobs for them. "I'm literally brewing the coffee while this is happening," Astley tells Newsweek . "I kind of thought, 'Oh that's interesting,' because it's super catchy. As I heard it being built, I said to myself, 'If I was in a club with my friends, I'd dance to that.'" Released 35 years ago, "Never Gonna Give You Up," which appeared on Astley's debut album Whenever You Need Somebody , became the blue-eyed soul singer's first No. 1 smash in the U.S., followed by the hit singles "Together Forever" and "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man." Not only "Never Gonna Give You Up" has … [Read more...] about Rick Astley looks back at “Never Gonna Give You Up” turning thirty-five
How Proliferation of Battery Swapping in EV Market Will Benefit Customers, Provide Level-Playing Field
In telecommunication, India lagged to adopt newer technology. However, once the technology entered India, it disrupted the market, making India the world’s largest and cheapest telecom market, with world-class infrastructure and connectivity. India, today, is amongst the largest telecom markets in the world with over a billion subscribers and more than 80% mobile penetration. Similarly, Electric Vehicles (EVs) picked up in India 2021 onwards, with catapulted support from the much-strategized FAME II. On an average, India accounts for more than 1.5M new 2wheeler (2w) retail sales every month, which is around 80% of overall automotive sales. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to transition to clean mobility. In terms of oil dependency, 2ws are responsible for around 62% of total petrol demand in India. With focused policy interventions and emerging technologies in the space of EVs, innovative business models will lead the transition and disrupt traditional markets. We believe … [Read more...] about How Proliferation of Battery Swapping in EV Market Will Benefit Customers, Provide Level-Playing Field
You Want Forced Births? Then We Want Forced Socialism
Who bears responsibility for government-sanctioned forced birth? How about the anti-abortion legislators in 26 states who have either banned abortion entirely or made it so onerous for women to end a pregnancy that we are entering a new medieval era of state-imposed reproduction with all the hardship that comes from bringing an unintended child into the world. Conservative politicians who worked so hard to overturn Roe v Wade blithely say women can give up their newborns for adoption, no questions asked, and they’ll put more money into foster care. More wishful thinking than realistic policy, these fixes don’t come anywhere near meeting the needs. We already have a foster care system that is near the breaking point with more than 400,000 kids waiting to be placed or reunited with their parents, many of them with special needs. If we’re going to have forced births, it is not unreasonable to ask the government to cover the costs. We can call it forced socialism with the burden … [Read more...] about You Want Forced Births? Scientists want to build huge ‘space bubbles’ to protect the Earth from overheating
Researchers have suggested that ‘space bubbles’ the size of Brazil could be an effective way to slow the effects of global warming. A raft in space of small, inflatable bubbles could shield the Earth from solar radiation and reflect a faction of the light coming from the Sun. Astronomers believe that unlike other attempts to geoengineer our planet , such as dissolving gases in the stratosphere, this method does not interfere with ecosystems on Earth and therefore would have less of an impact on wildlife and plants. However, this proposal is only meant to supplement – not replace – current attempts by humans to mitigate climate change. "Geoengineering might be our final and only option, yet most geoengineering proposals are earth-bound, which poses tremendous risks to our living ecosystem”, Carlo Ratti , who is the head of MIT’s Senseable City Lab, told Dezeen . Recommended Election win should trigger Scottish independence, says Sturgeon … [Read more...] about Scientists want to build huge ‘space bubbles’ to protect the Earth from overheating
Satire | Some ideas to improve Agnipath
I have only two regrets in life: turning back just short of the summit while climbing Mt. Everest; and not joining the military when young. For an ultra-nationalist patriot like me, not having defended my country in Siachen is hard to digest. So I had my hopes pinned on the Jalpath scheme. But it drowned in government lethargy. Then I thought I would enlist when the Vayupath scheme is announced. But that one never took off. When I heard about Agnipath , I thought I’d finally get my chance to join the army and shoot the momos out of the bad guys across the border. Unfortunately, the Agnipath scheme’s upper age limit is 23. So once again, I’ve had to submerge my idli of anticipation in the sambar of disappointment and swallow the kashayam of frustration. ALSO READ: IAF receives over 1.83 lakh applications under Agnipath scheme in six days But I am not alone. Millions of young patriots feel the same way. Don’t get me wrong — I believe Agnipath is a great scheme. But that … [Read more...] about Satire | Some ideas to improve Agnipath
London Mayor Sadiq Khan Calls for UK to Rejoin EU’s Single Market
London’s leftist mayor and arch-Remainer Sadiq Khan has called for the United Kingdom to ignore the democratically expressed will of the people and rejoin the European Union’s Single Market. Rather than focus on the violent crime wave that has characterised his tenure in office, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has once again decided to relitigate the 2016 Brexit referendum and call for the UK to rejoin the EU’s Single Market. While he said that he could not speak for the entire Labour Party he said that the left-wing opposition should be campaigning to rejoin the trading bloc, LBC reported . “I believe we should. Spot on,” Mr Khan during the annual State of London debate, saying that he believes the decision to leave the European Union was the “biggest piece of self-inflicted harm ever done to a country.” The statements came amid the ongoing dispute over the Northern Ireland Protocol which essentially kept the British country inside the EU’s Single Market ostensibly to prevent the … [Read more...] about London Mayor Sadiq Khan Calls for UK to Rejoin EU’s Single Market
