The supposed “land of the free” is the latest of a growing list of countries who have infantilised women, as no longer having the right to control their own bodies, thanks to the overturning of Roe v Wade . This once-landmark decision making it clear that the US constitution protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose an abortion has been eschewed in favour of individual states deciding their own abortion laws. As a barrister, I am sometimes criticised for supposedly “not respecting” the integrity of the rule of law. Well, it is my view that the criminalisation of abortion shows that we are not all accountable to the same laws. The law is made by men, for men: to control, dominate and subjugate women. A bride-to-be has declared she's charging her wedding guests £100 each to attend her upcoming ceremony - as she wants to try and " save money " on the event, which already has a budget of £40,000. Carla Bellucci , 40, is set to tie the knot with her 52-year-old fiancé Giovanni but has said that her 30 guests won't be able to get into the venue for free on the day, as they'll all have to contribute £100 if they want to see her get married . That price tag is on top of the cash each guest will have to pay for flights and accommodation to Carla's destination wedding, as the ceremony will take place in Cape Verde, Africa, in July next year. Who bears responsibility for government-sanctioned forced birth? How about the anti-abortion legislators in 26 states who have either banned abortion entirely or made it so onerous for women to end a pregnancy that we are entering a new medieval era of state-imposed reproduction with all the hardship that comes from bringing an unintended child into the world. Conservative politicians who worked so hard to overturn Roe v Wade blithely say women can give up their newborns for adoption, no questions asked, and they’ll put more money into foster care. More wishful thinking than realistic policy, these fixes don’t come anywhere near meeting the needs. We already have a foster care system that is near the breaking point with more than 400,000 kids waiting to be placed or reunited with their parents, many of them with special needs. Researchers have suggested that ‘space bubbles’ the size of Brazil could be an effective way to slow the effects of global warming. A raft in space of small, inflatable bubbles could shield the Earth from solar radiation and reflect a faction of the light coming from the Sun. Astronomers believe that unlike other attempts to geoengineer our planet , such as dissolving gases in the stratosphere, this method does not interfere with ecosystems on Earth and therefore would have less of an impact on wildlife and plants.
