The Latest: Prosecutor wants corruption report made public

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Latest on a Statehouse corruption probe in South Carolina (all times local): 4:10 p.m. A South Carolina prosecutor is asking a judge to release a State Grand Jury report on political corruption, saying it has information of great public interest. In a court filing Thursday, Solicitor David Pascoe wrote the grand jury finished its two-year term in June and the main suspects in the Statehouse corruption probe have been indicted. Four Republican lawmakers have pleaded guilty, although none served prison time. Two more are awaiting trial. Most of the charges were for using their offices for personal gain or converting campaign money to their own use. Pascoe says releasing the report is the best way to fight public corruption. He also the report suggests specific actions the Legislature can make. Corporate Reporting on Anti-Bribery and Corruption Measures

Transparency International (TI), the global organisation against corruption, has published a policy study,  Transparency in Corporate Reporting: Assessing the World’s Largest Companies  (the study). The study ranks 105 of the top publicly-traded companies, based on their advertised commitment to transparency. Overall, these companies showed improvement in their level of anti-bribery and corruption reporting when compared with a similar TI study conducted in 2008. Despite the improvements, TI urges these companies to take additional action to further increase the transparency of their operations.The Study Although transparency does not necessarily equal a good anti-bribery and corruption performance, TI believes that reporting demonstrates a company’s commitment to countering bribery and corruption and increases the accountability of the board of directors. A red sky at morning is the traditional harbinger of ill weather. From our vantage point in Brussels, we’ve scanned the horizon for signs of the future of anti-bribery enforcement activity in Europe. We’ve identified four factors that are starting small, but may build into heavy seas.In particular, there are signs that companies that sell to governments in Europe may be well advised to shore up compliance procedures so they can remain dry if a wave of anti-corruption sentiment breaks over the public procurement sector. 1.     Corruption Reports: The Issue SurfacesIn February 2014, the European Commission published its first detailed report on public corruption in the EU. The European Commission Anti-Corruption Report states that corruption may be adding 20-25% to the cost of public procurement in Europe. Former NY lawmaker who was paid $3.7M in law firm referral fees gets 12 years in corruption case

Former longtime New York legislative leader Sheldon Silver was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in federal prison, following his jury conviction last year in a corruption case that included charges of money laundering, fraud and extortion.Among other issues, prosecutors said Silver, then a practicing attorney, received $3.7 million in law firm referral fees as a quid pro quo for exerting his influence as a top Democratic lawmaker.Although not a record term, the former New York Assembly speaker’s prison sentence is one of the most severe ever imposed on a politician in the state, according to the New York Times (reg. req.) and the Washington Post (reg. req.).U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni said she wanted Silver’s stiff sentence in the Manhattan case to be a deterrent to other politicians tempted by opportunities for corruption, reports Reuters.“Mr. Silver, those are not the actions of a basically honest person,” she told the 72-year-old, after recapitulating … [Read more...] about Former NY lawmaker who was paid $3.7M in law firm referral fees gets 12 years in corruption case
