A privacy expert has quit the Google-owned Sidewalk Labs smart city project, citing fears of constant surveillance within the proposed city. Ann Cavoukian, the former privacy commissioner of Ontario and a consultant to Sidewalk Labs, a company owned by Google which aims to develop a “smart city” in Toronto, has quit the project according to Gizmodo . Cavoukian was recruited to join the project as a consultant but handed in her resignation letter recently, stating: “I imagined us creating a Smart City of Privacy, as opposed to a Smart City of Surveillance.” In 2017, Waterfront Toronto enlisted the help of Sidewalk Labs, which is linked to Google’s parent company Alphabet, to develop a plan for a smart city in the town’s Quayside area. As part of this development, Cavoukian created a plan called Privacy by Design which aimed to protect the data privacy of the citizens of the smart city. But the smart city has faced a growing level of criticism since it’s announcement. Jim … [Read more...] about Privacy Expert Leaves Google-Backed ‘Smart City’ Project over Surveillance Fears

Musk tweet joking about buying Manchester United causes stir
LONDON (AP) — Elon Musk caused a stir by tweeting that he was buying the English soccer team Manchester United — whose current owners are opposed by many fans — then saying several hours later that it was a joke. It comes as the billionaire Tesla CEO faces a legal battle in the U.S. after backing out of a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion. He is a prolific user of the platform, often musing about social issues or joking with his 103 million followers and occasionally getting into trouble with U.S. regulators. Early Wednesday, Musk sent a tweet about his political affiliations and then added in a second tweet: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” That came as shocking news in the Manchester United world — albeit welcome to many — after nearly a decade of sub-par performances. Asked by a follower whether he was serious, Musk later tweeted, “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams.” It wasn't Musk's first joke about buying a … [Read more...] about Musk tweet joking about buying Manchester United causes stir
Rudy Giuliani expected to testify before Georgia grand jury
ATLANTA - Rudy Giuliani is set to testify Wednesday morning before a Georgia special grand jury as part of a criminal probe into efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The former New York mayor, who was informed Monday that he is a target of the investigation, will be the highest-profile member of Donald Trump's inner circle to appear before grand jurors. His expected testimony marks a victory for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who has faced challenges in recent weeks as her office has worked to hear under oath from elected public officials and other Trump allies. Giuliani was one of the most committed and outspoken advocates for Trump's false assertions about the 2020 election, claiming before Georgia lawmakers multiple times that he possessed evidence of widespread voter fraud. State election officials quickly debunked those claims. Giuliani was subpoenaed July 5 alongside others involved in the Trump campaign who were active in spreading false claims, … [Read more...] about Rudy Giuliani expected to testify before Georgia grand jury
A different angle on Pelosi’s trip
Nam Jeong-ho The author is a columnist of the JoongAng Ilbo. There has been much discussion about President Yoon Suk-yeol not making time to meet visiting U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who flew to Seoul on Aug. 3 after she defied Beijing to make a visit to Taiwan where she lambasted China for human rights violations. Critics speculated that Yoon had avoided a problematic meeting with Pelosi citing his summer break so as not to irk Beijing. They say that Yoon not meeting with Pelosi impairs the South Korea-U.S. alliance. Although they have a point, Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan must not be interpreted as a move representing the U.S. government. President Joe Biden as well as his foreign and security aides, military and mainstream U.S. media like the New York Times and the Washington Post have all opposed her visit to Taiwan. They did not think it was wise to unnecessarily provoke China at a time the U.S. was engaged indirectly with a war with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. … [Read more...] about A different angle on Pelosi’s trip

Little talk of rainforest protection in the Brazilian Amazon
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — In the Brazilian Amazon these days, it's nearly impossible to run for office talking up the environment. More common is a scene like this: A candidate for Congress parades a helicopter — the symbol of illegal gold mining — painted with the Brazilian flag, through the streets of the Amazon city of Boa Vista. He defends a gold rush that has devastated Indigenous territories and contaminated rivers. In a neighboring state an Indigenous candidate stops wearing green clothing in public out of fear of violence. Like all Brazilians, residents of the vast Amazon region will elect governors and lawmakers in October’s general elections. But as the campaign takes the streets, few candidates or voters are talking about current record-breaking deforestation rates or other environmental problems. Instead, many politicians vie for who has a bolder … [Read more...] about Little talk of rainforest protection in the Brazilian Amazon
‘Superpower in Its Downfall’: China Celebrates Anniversary of Biden Afghanistan Disaster
China’s state-run Global Times took a victory lap on Monday, the one-year anniversary of President Joe Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, hailing the debacle as the death of American “hegemony” and a humiliation the United States will never overcome. One editorial from the Global Times excitedly claimed the “international community” was permanently turned off by “the U.S.’ irresponsible hasty withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan,” leaving the unfortunate residents of that country to suffer “endless trauma” caused by the botched American occupation. The Global Times and its stable of “Chinese experts” argued the “Kabul moment” showed that America’s playbook of “democratic transformation” will never work anywhere, the American “strategy of hegemony” is a bust, and while Biden might have thought he was escaping from a quagmire, he instead made the United States perpetually responsible for the misery of the Afghan people. The Chinese paper … [Read more...] about ‘Superpower in Its Downfall’: China Celebrates Anniversary of Biden Afghanistan Disaster
Google Cancels ‘Smart Town’ Plan Criticized as ‘Data Surveillance Test Bed’
Google-affiliated company Sidewalk Labs has reportedly abandoned its plan to build a high-tech “smart town” on Toronto’s waterfront due to “unprecedented economic uncertainty.” The project had already faced controversy around the tech giant’s data collection plans, with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association called it a “data surveillance test bed.” CBC reports that the high-tech Toronto neighborhood planned by Google-affiliated firm Sidewalk Labs has been abandoned, with the company citing “unprecedented economic uncertainty” motivating the decision. The project, dubbed Quayside, didn’t have the government approvals it needed to go ahead regardless and has been consistently questioned about the privacy aspects of the proposed neighborhood by Toronto citizens and civic leaders. The “smart city” planned to feature cutting edge technology including heated sidewalks, autonomous cars, and residential towers constructed from timber. The project planned to create 44,000 jobs and … [Read more...] about Google Cancels ‘Smart Town’ Plan Criticized as ‘Data Surveillance Test Bed’
New Hulu documentary reveals dark discoveries about Victoria’s Secret
Sign up for our Remote Control newsletter to receive the best of streaming in your inbox every week. For decades, mallgoers, slightly confused teenage girls and horny teenage boys have wondered what secret this mysterious Victoria is hiding. The new three-part Hulu docuseries “Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons” explores these secrets and, well, they are less “she only wears thongs (wink)” and more “wait, was this brand just a lot of pink thongs covering up the very real exploitation of underage girls?” The media has long covered the shift in our awareness of the retouching and beyond-unreal expectations of women’s bodies, but what was going on behind the scenes at Victoria’s Secret has somehow remained mostly under wraps. You will be stunned to know that a brand built under the guise of female empowerment was created by very powerful men, who hired mostly other powerful men, who were allegedly secretly exploiting young girls, and then sold that manufactured “brand” … [Read more...] about New Hulu documentary reveals dark discoveries about Victoria’s Secret
