Japan high court rejects paternity harassment allegations
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese High Court on Thursday rejected an appeal by a former brokerage manager alleging on-the-job harassment and unlawful dismissal after he took parental leave while working at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley. The case of Glen Wood, a Canadian who has lived in Japan for more than three decades, has come to symbolize concerns over “paternity harassment,” or “pata hara.” Wood's is a rare case, for Japan, of a father seeking to take parental leave. Maternity harassment is more common. Wood began his fight in 2017, alleging he was harassed and forced from his job after taking parental leave when his son was born in 2015. The company rejected Wood's request for parental leave. His son was born prematurely and he rushed to see him though the company told him to just keep working, according to the lawsuit. When Wood returned to work in 2016, he was stripped of some … [Read more...] about Japan high court rejects paternity harassment allegations
Democrats’ chances of beating Ron Johnson in Wisconsin, according to polls
Wisconsin Democrats are aiming to flip Ron Johnson 's seat blue in November's midterm race, with recent polls showing the GOP senator may face an uphill battle for reelection. Johnson announced in January that he would seek a third Senate term despite previously pledging not to serve more than two terms. Meanwhile, recent polls show that more Wisconsin voters view the senator unfavorably than those who view him favorably. President Joe Biden won the swing state in the 2020 presidential election after Democrats flipped the governor's mansion blue for Tony Evers in 2018. It's still unclear which Democrat will face off against Johnson on November 8. Wisconsin's primaries will be held August 9, with the top four Democratic contenders being Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, state Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, businessman Alex Lasry and Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson. A new poll released this week and conducted from June 14 to 20 by Marquette Law School showed the … [Read more...] about Democrats’ chances of beating Ron Johnson in Wisconsin, according to polls
What Facebook and Google Can Learn From America’s First Major News Hoax
In the age of the platform, how can anybody be sure that the news they read is true? Last week, lies, hoaxes, and rumors prevailed on Facebook and Google following the mass murder in Las Vegas. The sites promoted stories claiming that the killer was a Rachel Maddow fan, or an ISIS follower—both false. As gatekeepers of valuable information, the platforms failed , The Atlantic ’s Alexis Madrigal wrote. This was a familiar story. After the 2016 election, Russian propaganda and false memes on Facebook elevated “fake news” in the national lexicon. Today, with two-thirds of Americans getting their news from editor-free social media sites , the veracity of news stories is, itself, a major news story. For Facebook and Google, the rise of misinformation is a Frankenstein monster unleashed by their own technology. How can these companies rein in their dangerous creation? The briefest and most honest answer today is it won’t be easy. But some key lessons of the intractability of bad … [Read more...] about What Facebook and Google Can Learn From America’s First Major News Hoax
Paris Saint-Germain Chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Jerome Valcke Trials Begins on Monday
FIFA’s disgraced former secretary general Jerome Valcke and Paris Saint-Germain chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi go on trial in Switzerland on Monday in the latest chapter of football’s seemingly endless corruption saga. The two men have been indicted for alleged corruption in the attribution of football broadcasting rights — Al-Khelaifi is also the boss of beIN Media. The hearing, which has already been delayed because of the coronavirus, is scheduled to last until September 25 at the Federal Criminal Court of Bellinzona. But it will open under another cloud as suspicions of collusion between the Swiss prosecution and FIFA have undermined its credibility. Centre stage is Valcke, former right-hand man of ousted FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who appears in two separate cases of television rights corruption — he faces up to five years in prison if found guilty. The 59-year-old Frenchman stands accused of wanting to transfer the Middle East and North Africa rights for screening the … [Read more...] about Paris Saint-Germain Chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Jerome Valcke Trials Begins on Monday
TV Rights Trial of PSG Chief Al-Khelaifi and Ex-FIFA official Valcke opens
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and FIFA ‘s former secretary general Jerome Valcke went on trial in Switzerland on Monday accused of corruption in the attribution of World Cup TV rights. Al-Khelaifi, who is also chairman of Qatar-owned broadcaster beIN Media, is charged with inciting Valcke to commit “aggravated criminal mismanagement.” The hearing, which has already been delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, is scheduled to last until September 25 at the Federal Criminal Court of Bellinzona. If the hearing runs its course, it will be the first judgement handed down in Switzerland, the seat of most international sports organisations, on the 20 or so proceedings opened in the last five years surrounding FIFA. Nigeria’s meningitis epidemic has killed eight times more people this year than last year
More than 260 people have died in Nigeria as a result of the African country's recent meningitis outbreak—eight times more than the number of deaths caused by the disease in 2016. In a series of tweets, Nigeria's Center for Disease Control (NDC) said there were 1,828 suspected cases of meningitis reported so far in 2017. Across the country's 15 states, 269 Nigerians had died as of Monday compared to the 33 people killed by the disease back in 2016. Although there is a meningitis vaccine, Nigerian officials are concerned there could be a new strain of the disease being transmitted from neighboring countries and refugees who have flocked to Nigeria. The country's Minister of Health Isaac Adewole told BBC News that the potential foreign strain of meningitis that is affecting Nigerians could be resistant to the vaccine usually administered to prevent the spread of the disease; that may explain the relatively high number of fatalities from the virus this year. Meningitis, which … [Read more...] about Nigeria’s meningitis epidemic has killed eight times more people this year than last year
