Explained: What happened to Armenians in 1915?
The story so far: U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday officially recognised the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915-16 as “an act of genocide”. Mr. Biden’s announcement on the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day could infuriate Turkey, America’s NATO ally. Up to 1.5 million Armenians are estimated to have been killed in the early stage of the First World War within the territories of the Ottoman Empire. In 2019, the U.S. Congress passed resolutions calling the slaughter a genocide, but the Donald Trump administration stopped short of officially calling it so. Was it a genocide? According to Article II of the UN Convention on Genocide of December 1948, genocide has been described as carrying out acts intended “to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group”. Raphael Lemkin, the Polish lawyer who coined the term “genocide” in 1943, had written that he had been influenced by atrocities against Armenians as well as the Nazi killings of … [Read more...] about Explained: What happened to Armenians in 1915?
BJP Arm-twisting Opponents Is a Myth; Congress Still Has Greater Leverage Across India
“The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is perfecting the art of losing elections, but forming governments,” wrote CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, commenting on the current political crisis in Maharashtra. This is a rather ironic statement from a party which has perfected the art of not fighting elections, but managing Rajya Sabha seats through political networking. Nevertheless, this charge is repeated by Opposition parties, sections of the media and political commentariat. The BJP is able to arm-twist its opponents, and destabilise governments. Just see what they appear to be doing in Maharashtra. Is this ‘democracy’? Of course, none of this commentary takes into account what the people of Maharashtra actually voted for. In the 2019 Assembly elections, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance won a comfortable majority of 161 out of 288 seats. The vote share of the winning combine was 42%, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress together scored only 32%. A closer analysis of the … [Read more...] about BJP Arm-twisting Opponents Is a Myth; Congress Still Has Greater Leverage Across India

Munawar Faruqui has been making headlines ever since he emerged as the winner of Kangana Ranaut’s controversial reality show Lock Upp. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the comedian will be participating in the stunt-based reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi 12. However, if recent reports are to be believed, Munawar has now backed out from Rohit Shetty’s show. The shooting for Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 has already begun and all contestants are in Capetown (South Africa) for the same. While celebrity contestants including Shivangi Joshi, Mohit Malik and Pratik Sehajpal among others have been dropping behind-the-scenes pictures and videos on social media, Munawar is nowhere to be seen. Amid all this, Munawar Faruqui held an Instagram live session for his fans on Wednesday (June 8). While the comedian thanked fans for showering love on his new song, he did not mention anything about Khatron Ke Khiladi. Boris Johnson says it would be ‘crazy’ for him to quit even if he LOSES crunch by-elections
Defiant Boris Johnson has said it would be “crazy” for him to quit - even if he loses BOTH of today’s crunch by-elections. Polls opened at 7am in Wakefield, which Labour are tipped to regain, and Tiverton and Honiton where Lib Dems claim to be “neck and neck”. The PM admitted the Tories could suffer a double defeat in the Red Wall and ‘Blue Wall’ - despite a 24,000-strong majority in Tiverton. But he rebuffed suggestions the results would be his personal responsibility - or that he would finally throw in the towel. The Prime Minister will be 5,000 miles away at the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting when the results roll in. Moments after the verdict that could doom his premiership, he will speak to 54 nations alongside Prince Charles in Kigali, Rwanda - followed by a press conference. ( Image: Getty Images) The Mirror asked how much he would be personally responsible for the results - and whether he’d throw in the towel if he lost both. … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson says it would be ‘crazy’ for him to quit even if he LOSES crunch by-elections
