Why Viktor Orbán’s Racism Matters in the U.S.
This is an edition of Up for Debate, a newsletter by Conor Friedersdorf. On Wednesdays, he rounds up timely conversations and solicits reader responses to one thought-provoking question. Later, he publishes some thoughtful replies. Sign up for the newsletter here. Question of the Week What do you want to know about my views or how I’d answer particular challenges to them? I’ll be on vacation next week, so instead of a normal “question of the week,” I’d be grateful if you took this opportunity to “ask me anything” about any subject of public interest—including but not limited to any subject that I’ve ever written about here at The Atlantic —so that I can accumulate some questions that I will answer in future newsletters. Trump-aligned challengers ousting GOP legislative incumbents
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 MADISON, Wis. (AP) — As Wisconsin's longest-serving Assembly speaker, Republican Robin Vos has presided over efforts to restrict abortions, weaken unions, expand gun rights and push back against COVID-19 mandates. Despite that, he's facing a primary challenger who claims he's not conservative enough. The challenger's argument: Vos should do more to respond to former President Donald Trump's unfounded allegations of fraud in the 2020 election. Primary challengers like the one facing Vos next Tuesday have been successfully targeting incumbent state lawmakers across the country, and Republicans are taking the brunt of it. With more than half the state legislative primaries concluded, Republican incumbents this year have been losing at nearly twice the average rate of the past decade, according to data compiled for The Associated Press by the election tracking organization … [Read more...] about Trump-aligned challengers ousting GOP legislative incumbents
WATCH — Delingpole: Farage’s Brexit Party Launches Its Secret Weapon…
Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party launched today with its new secret weapon: Annunziata Rees-Mogg, sister of leading Conservative Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg is standing as one of its candidates. Annunziata has herself stood twice as a Conservative party candidate. Conservatism and the Conservative party is in this family’s blood, so it’s not a decision she undertook lightly. Farage’s Secret Weapon: Annunziata Rees-Mogg Defects from Tories to Join New Brexit Party https://t.co/APvMr4mSw2 — Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) April 12, 2019 As she told me at the party’s launch – held, not in Remain stronghold London, of course, but in Coventry in the heart of industrial England – she had been driven to despair by the Conservative government’s failure to deliver on the result of the 2016 Referendum. “So many voters I know feel their voices have not been listened to, have been completely ignored and their wishes have been betrayed. I felt I had to stand up and do … [Read more...] about WATCH — Delingpole: Farage’s Brexit Party Launches Its Secret Weapon…
Ex-RNC head Steele rips Cruz, Bannon over war-like rhetoric in CPAC speech
Senator Ted Cruz and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon were criticized on Sunday by Michael Steele, former head of the Republican National Convention (RNC), over war-like comments the two made over the weekend. Cruz and Bannon spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas on Saturday, with both delivering speeches many viewed as war-like and eager to incite violence. Bannon in his speech said that conservatives "are at war" with the Left, while Cruz said conservatives have to "go fight the barbarians." "It's like the old Roman Colosseum where you slam on a breastplate and you grab a battle ax and you go fight the barbarians," the Texas senator said. "As they say in the military world, it is a target-rich environment." Steele, who served as RNC chairman from 2009 to 2011, appeared on MSNBC 's The Katie Phang Show on Sunday where he was critical of the comments made by Republican leaders at CPAC. "It is more fascism than farce," he said. "It is … [Read more...] about Ex-RNC head Steele rips Cruz, Bannon over war-like rhetoric in CPAC speech
The number of LGBTQ AAPIs running for office has doubled in the past few years. Candidates share some reasons why.
Janani Ramachandran, 30, says she’s always lived at the intersection of two isolations. As an openly gay South Asian woman growing up post-9/11, she felt that few people could understand her specific experience — and that representation was nonexistent. “I think it definitely is difficult for LGBTQ South Asians to feel their full selves in different spaces,” she told NBC Asian America. “I can feel uncomfortable in predominantly LGBTQ spaces, because I see very few people that look like me. In predominantly South Asian spaces, I also sometimes feel uncomfortable in not being reflected.” Running for Oakland City Council this year, Ramachandran hopes to change that. If she’s successful, she'll be the city’s first South Asian councilmember and the only LGBTQ woman councilmember in the state. Her run is reflective of what experts say is a demographic shift in the country’s politics. Since 2018, the number of LGBTQ Asians running for office has more than doubled. This year, … [Read more...] about The number of LGBTQ AAPIs running for office has doubled in the past few years. Candidates share some reasons why.
I’m a Conservative, and I Don’t Know What the GOP Stands For
You’ve got to stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything (at least according to the great country and western philosopher Aaron Tippin). But it also happens to be true. Take the Republican Party. Instead of turning on Donald Trump following the devastating revelations in the Jan. 6 hearings (or, at least, exercising strategic silence), the party’s reaction was to immediately fall in line. Again. Trump, himself, is full of contradictions. The obvious hypocrisies include: “ You can’t resist ” (a police officer); “ Lock her up !” (back when he thought it was OK to suggest using the government to jail his political opponents); and “If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth?” (before he invoked the Fifth Amendment nearly 450 times this week). Clearly, this is an unprincipled man, whose positions are a matter of convenience. But his impact on the Republican Party transcends his own moral flexibility. Look no further than the FBI’s search of Trump’s … [Read more...] about I’m a Conservative, and I Don’t Know What the GOP Stands For
‘Daily Show’ Mocks Marjorie Taylor Greene’s ‘Hilarious’ Jan. 6 CPAC Performance Art
On Monday night’s Daily Show , Trevor Noah used a good portion of his opening monologue to focus on this past weekend’s “special tribute” to the imprisoned Jan. 6 rioters at CPAC in Texas that he jokingly described as “very moving and not at all hilarious.” The host was talking about a bizarre performance art piece in which an actor in an orange jumpsuit sat in a fake prison cell and openly wept to bring the plight of the insurrectionists to life for the conservative conference attendees. Among them was Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who entered the cage to pray with him . “OK, wait, wait, wait,” Noah said. “Help me understand the logic here. Marjorie Taylor Greene is praying for a fake prisoner? Who is this lady?” Emphasizing that “this is a person who is actually part of running your country,” he added, “She must have the hardest time at Broadway shows. ‘They killed Hamilton!’” In Greene’s “defense,” the host said the actor must have really … [Read more...] about ‘Daily Show’ Mocks Marjorie Taylor Greene’s ‘Hilarious’ Jan. 6 CPAC Performance Art
Trump Critic Republican Liz Cheney Loses Congress Seat to Conspiracy Theorist Chosen by Former Prez
Republican rebel Liz Cheney lost her seat in Congress Tuesday to an election conspiracy theorist, US media projected, in the latest sign of her party’s break with traditional conservatism to embrace Donald Trump’s hardline “America First” agenda. Once considered Republican royalty, the lawmaker from Wyoming has become a pariah in the party over her membership of the congressional panel investigating the January 6 assault on the US Capitol — and Trump’s role in fanning the flames. Defeat for the 56-year-old elder daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney in the Wyoming Republican primary marks the end of the family’s four-decade political association with one of America’s most conservative states. The Republican nomination to contest November’s midterms instead goes to 59-year-old lawyer Harriet Hageman — Trump’s hand-picked candidate who has amplified his false claims of a “rigged” 2020 election. But there is already speculation that Cheney may challenge Trump for the … [Read more...] about Trump Critic Republican Liz Cheney Loses Congress Seat to Conspiracy Theorist Chosen by Former Prez
ANALYSIS: The Left’s Biggest Nightmare In America Is Coming True
Peter Thiel. Tucker Carlson. Former President Donald Trump. The trio of nationalists has a combined influence over American politics that is triggering a nightmare for Democrats in 2022. The November 2022 midterms are looming. Republicans look poised to pick up massive victories in the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate as the nationalist movement led by Thiel, Carlson, and Trump focuses on the failures of the Democrats’ first two years of controlling the Executive and Congressional branches. The “New Right” is a national conservative movement that works to counter progressive policy with trade protection, immigration restriction, foreign policy restraint, and a return to social conservatism. (RELATED: ANALYSIS: What Is The ‘New Right’ That’s Got The Left So Freaked Out?) Writer James Pogue summarized the New Right for Vanity Fair in April, calling it “a different strain of conservative politics” that is not a part of the typical conservative movement. “The podcasters, bro-ish … [Read more...] about ANALYSIS: The Left’s Biggest Nightmare In America Is Coming True
