The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine could be at risk for a shutdown, which one Russian Armed Forces lieutenant general says could lead to an emergency with the spread of radioactive substances. Russian troops took control of ZNPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, in March, and there have been widespread concerns about a nuclear disaster as ZNPP remains a central point in the fighting . The plant was repeatedly shelled this summer, and both Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other for the attacks, accusing the other side of engaging in "nuclear blackmail." Nuclear experts say that a potential ZNPP shutdown could lead to energy implications for Ukraine as well as to long-term concerns, such as worsening climate change. Scott Roecker, nuclear materials security vice president at Nuclear Threat Initiative, said if a ZNPP strike or shutdown were to occur, it could cause a reaction much worse than Chernobyl. Once nuclear fuel is used, it is considered … [Read more...] about Shutting down Ukraine nuclear power plant could have worldwide consequences

Unseal the Mar-a-Lago search affidavit—but redact it, too | Opinion
U.S. Magistrate Bruce Reinhart must decide what to do about the governments demand that the Mar-a-Lago search affidavit remain sealed. Former President Trump's lawyers have demanded the opposite: that the affidavit be unsealed and open to the public. Under the First Amendment, there is a strong presumption in favor of transparency and public availability of important documents. This presumption is rebuttable upon a showing of good cause. The showing cannot be a general claim that investigations should be protected; it must specifically point out names, words, and sentences whose unsealing would pose a significant danger. Unless such a showing can be made, secrecy is not justified in relation to important documents which the public has a legitimate interest in seeing. Accordingly, Judge Reinhardt should demand of the government that they make a showing of necessity sufficient to overcome the presumption of transparency. The result of such a process would be the release of most of … [Read more...] about Unseal the Mar-a-Lago search affidavit—but redact it, too | Opinion
Russia names three countries in nuclear danger over shelling of plant
As tensions between Ukraine and Russia grow over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Russia's Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the facility could be shut down if Ukrainian forces continue targeting it and named three countries in danger from radioactive fallout in the event of an incident at the plant. The Zaporizhzhia plant—the largest in Europe—has been under occupation since March, when it was captured by Russian troops, though it is still run by Ukrainian technicians. There has been concern over the fate of the power plant stuck in the middle of a brutal conflict and the risks it could pose to the entire European continent. The Zaporizhzhia plant has been the target of several military strikes since the end of July and both Kyiv and Moscow have accused each other's forces of shelling the facility. During Thursday's briefing, the head of Russia's radiation, chemical and biological defense forces Igor Kirillov said Zaporizhzhia's back-up support systems had been damaged … [Read more...] about Russia names three countries in nuclear danger over shelling of plant
Netflix Will Not Allow This Feature For Users With Its Ad-Tier Plan: All Details
Netflix is bringing its new ad-tier plan to the market very soon, but as the day passes, we are getting new details about this upcoming plan that may not appeal to many users. The latest update suggests Netflix will not allow users to download content and watch them offline with the ad-tier plan. Downloads are a big part of the streaming platforms, and most of them charging for their service allows offline viewing. But it seems Netflix has other ideas, and not only does it plan to charge consumers for its ad-tier plan (albeit lower than its current rates) but also restrict some features for its users. All these details were discovered in the Netflix iPhone code by a developer named Steve Moser. He also found traces of Netflix not allowing you to skip ads or let you use the service while the ad is running. The video streaming platform faces heavy competition from the likes of Hulu, Disney+ Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video among others. However, Netflix has been facing lower … [Read more...] about Netflix Will Not Allow This Feature For Users With Its Ad-Tier Plan: All Details
Millions Of Users Have Faced Security Threats Because Of Browser Extensions in 2022: What It Means
Cyber-security researchers said on Thursday that more than 1.3 million users were affected by threats hiding in browser extensions in the first half of 2022. The figure is over 70 per cent of the number of users affected by the same threat throughout 2021. Kaspersky researchers analysed what risks innocent-looking browser extensions pose to users and the activities of cybercriminals hiding threats under add-ons. Mimicking popular apps such as Google Translator or extensions with useful functionality like PDF Converter or Video Downloader, threats in browser extensions can insert advertisements, collect data about users’ browsing histories and even search for login credentials. “Even browser extensions that do not carry a malicious payload can be dangerous. For example, when the developers of these add-ons sell gathered user data to other companies, potentially exposing their data to someone who was not supposed to see it,” said Anton Ivanov, senior security researcher. Saudi woman sentenced to 34 years in prison for her Twitter activity
She went home for a vacation. Now a Saudi woman is facing 34 years in prison for sharing her views on social media, human rights groups say, in a case they have condemned as the latest worrying sign of the kingdom's crackdown on dissent . Salma al-Shehab, a 34-year-old mother of two, was an active Twitter user while studying for a doctoral degree at the University of Leeds School of Medicine in the United Kingdom. She posted her own tweets about human rights issues as well as retweeting activists. Al-Shehab, who is a Saudi citizen, was arrested while visiting her home in January 2021, according to multiple human rights groups based in Europe and the United States. After initially being sentenced to six years in jail, the sentence was increased to a record 34 years earlier this month following her appeal, the rights groups said. Al-Shehab was also slapped with a 34-year travel ban that will take effect following her release, they said. The charges against her included … [Read more...] about Saudi woman sentenced to 34 years in prison for her Twitter activity

North Korea Celebrates Alleged End of Coronavirus Pandemic with Communist Posters
The communist regime ruling North Korea declared victory against the Chinese coronavirus pandemic this week after only three months of having admitted to any coronavirus cases within its borders, publishing commemorative posters in its classic communist propaganda style. The North Korean dictatorship first admitted to having confirmed cases of Chinese coronavirus within its borders in May, two years after the disease had spread to nearly every country on the planet. It was one of the last countries to officially document coronavirus cases despite sharing borders with the country where the virus originated, China, as well as Russia and South Korea, which have both endured severe outbreaks of the disease. The official newspaper of the communist Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), Rodong Sinmun , and the government’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced the creation and distribution of posters on Wednesday to officially mark the end of the epidemic in the country. The posters … [Read more...] about North Korea Celebrates Alleged End of Coronavirus Pandemic with Communist Posters
