Mr. Trump, who failed to extract even a single extra dollar for his wall during a winter battle that shut down parts of the federal government for a record 35 days, will request $8.6 billion in the annual budget proposal, aides said. He will also ask Congress for another $3.6 billion to replenish military construction funds he has diverted … [Read more...] about Defying Congress, Trump Plans to Renew Fight for Border Wall Funding

Critics denounced the border agents’ action as overkill, but Mr Trump kept to a hard line. “They were being rushed by some very tough people and they used tear gas,” Mr Trump said. “Here’s the bottom line: Nobody is coming into our country unless they come in legally.” At a roundtable meeting in Mississippi on Monday, Mr Trump seemed to acknowledge that children were affected, asking: “Why is a parent running up into an area where they know the tear gas is forming and it’s going to be formed and they were running up with a child?” He said it was “a very minor form of the tear gas … [Read more...] about Donald Trump blames parents for exposing migrant children to tear gas

In an interview with The Washington Post, Mr Trump said he would be receiving a “full report” from his national security team on Russia’s recent actions in eastern Ukraine and the Black Sea. He said he would decide on a course after that. “Maybe I won’t have the meeting,” he said. “Maybe I won’t even have the meeting.” He added: “I don’t like that aggression. I don’t want that aggression at all.” The comments were Mr Trump’s strongest to date in condemnation of Russia’s recent actions in Ukraine, where tensions are flaring. But White House aides were … [Read more...] about Trump says he may cancel meeting with Putin over Ukraine

Defying Congress, Trump Sets Big Arms Sales to Saudis, UAE

· May 24, 2019 ·

President Donald Trump, saying there is a national emergency because of tensions with Iran, is clearing the sale of billions of dollars worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia and other countries, U.S. senators said on Friday, despite strong resistance to the plan from both Republicans and Democrats. The administration has informed congressional committees that it will go ahead with 22 arms deals worth some $8 billion, congressional aides said, sweeping aside a long-standing precedent for congressional review of such sales. Some lawmakers and congressional aides had warned earlier this week that Trump, frustrated with Congress holding up weapons sales like a major deal to sell Raytheon Co precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia, was considering using a loophole in arms control law to go ahead with the sale by declaring a national emergency. "I am disappointed, but not surprised, that the Trump Administration has failed once again to prioritize our long-term national security interests or … [Read more...] about Defying Congress, Trump Sets Big Arms Sales to Saudis, UAE

Trump loves strong borders. Boundaries, not so much

· April 5, 2018 ·

Checks and balances, unchecked Another morning, another tweet storm, a recurring theme: Donald Trump giving the impression that he’d like the rest of the federal government to take a side — his side — by squeezing his adversaries and rewarding his friends. The president is displeased with how the Justice Department and FBI have responded to document requests from his Republican Capitol Hill allies who have sought to reignite investigations of Hillary Clinton and discredit the Russia probe. “So sad that the Department of ‘Justice’ and the FBI are slow walking, or even not giving, the unredacted documents requested by Congress,” Trump tweeted. “An embarrassment to our country!” Justice and the FBI are headed by Trump appointees who promised to maintain the law enforcement agencies’ independence from partisan politics. Trump also upped the ante in his attacks on Amazon — whose CEO, Jeff Bezos, owns The Washington Post … [Read more...] about Trump loves strong borders. Boundaries, not so much
