Amber Heard has testified that she was initially let go from her Aquaman 2 contract amid the negative publicity surrounding her relationship with ex-husband Johnny Depp . Heard's tumultuous, ill-fated marriage to Depp has been the focus of an avalanche of headlines in recent years, thanks to a libel court battle that took place in London back in 2020 and their ongoing defamation trial in Fairfax, Virginia. Their court proceedings arose after Depp, 58, filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard, 36, accusing her of defamation over an op-ed published by The Washington Post , in which she said she was a victim of domestic abuse. While Heard did not name Depp in the article, his lawyers argued it was clear she was referring to the star. Heard is countersuing for $100 million for nuisance. During proceedings at the Fairfax County Circuit Courthouse, each star has accused the other of domestic abuse. Depp and Heard have each denied the other's allegations of violence during the … [Read more...] about Amber Heard confirms she was released from “Aquaman” contract due to trial

Amber Heard confirms she has hit, thrown things at Johnny Depp under oath
Amber Heard reiterated in the Fairfax County courtroom in Virginia that she has previously hit and thrown things at her ex-husband Johnny Depp . The admission under oath on the witness stand has been latched onto by social media users and become a major talking point on social media. Depp's attorney, Camille Vasquez , was questioning Heard when the actor clarified that it was always her testimony that she had "hit" Depp. Depp and Heard are currently embroiled in a $50 million defamation lawsuit after Heard wrote a 2018 op-ed stating she was a survivor of domestic violence. She never mentioned her ex-husband Depp by name but his legal team argue the insinuation has caused a massive loss of potential earnings. While on the stand Tuesday, Heard was once again asked about her own violent actions towards Depp. "It's always been my own testimony that I hit Johnny," Heard told the court, turning to address the jury. Asked whether she threw anything at him during a specific … [Read more...] about Amber Heard confirms she has hit, thrown things at Johnny Depp under oath
I was never bogged down by failures, says Perarivalan
An unrelenting faith in judiciary despite several setbacks and constant support of family and friends formed the basis of the three-decades-old battle for freedom tasting success on Wednesday, A.G. Perarivalan, one of the convicts in the Raji Gandhi assassination case who was set at liberty by the Supreme Court, said. “It was a lone man’s struggle for justice. It would not have been possible had my mother not stood by me all through my testing times. It was not just my suffering in prison for 31 long years…my mother and other family members also suffered equally. I have had several setbacks in these years. On many occasions, freedom seemed to be at the doorstep but the case would get dismissed. But I was never bogged down by failures. I gathered courage and started from the scratch again,” Mr. Perarivalan told The Hindu . Moscow says more Mariupol fighters surrender; Kyiv silent on their fate
KYIV/MARIUPOL, Ukraine (Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday nearly 700 more Ukrainian fighters had surrendered in Mariupol but Kyiv was silent about their fate, while a pro-Russian separatist leader said commanders were still holed up in tunnels beneath the Azovstal steelworks. More than a day after Kyiv announced it had ordered its garrison in Mariupol to stand down, the ultimate outcome of Europe's bloodiest battle for decades remained unresolved. Ukrainian officials halted all public discussion of the fate of fighters who had made their last stand there. "The state is making utmost efforts to carry out the rescue of our servicemen. Let's wait. Currently, the most important thing is to save the lives of our heroes," military spokesman Oleksandr Motuzaynik told a news conference. "Any information to the public could endanger that process." Russia said 694 more fighters had surrendered overnight, bringing the total number of people who had laid down arms to 959. The leader … [Read more...] about Moscow says more Mariupol fighters surrender; Kyiv silent on their fate
Together, rodents and cats wiped out 92 species of birds, says study
Disruptive humans have played a major role in wiping out at least 187 species of birds since 1500. Two natural enemies – rodents and cats – have almost been as lethal. According to the State of the World’s Birds, a global study on the status of avian species, introduced mammals or invasive predators are the primary driver of extinctions of localised bird species. While rodents have been linked to the extinction of 52 bird species, cats have accounted for 40. “At least 187 avian extinctions have been confirmed or suspected since 1500 [baseline year for the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature], 90% of which pertain to endemic insular species concentrated on the Hawaiian Islands, mainland Australia and islands, the Mascarene Islands, New Zealand, and French Polynesia,” the study says in the section on patterns and trends of extinctions. The birds that vanished from these islands belonged to 109 taxa or taxonomical groups, most of them (33) in the Hawaiian … [Read more...] about Together, rodents and cats wiped out 92 species of birds, says study

California woman says dog defended her from mountain lion
BIG BAR, Calif. — A woman who was attacked by a mountain lion in Northern California says her dog jumped to her defense and was badly wounded in protecting her. “I don't think I will ever be able to live up to how amazing and loyal she is to me,” Erin Wilson told the Sacramento Bee on Tuesday. Wilson, 24, lives in rural Trinity County, about four hours northwest of Sacramento. On Monday, she drove to the Trinity River near unincorporated Big Bar to take an afternoon stroll with Eva, her 2 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois. Wilson was on a path with Eva a few yards ahead when a mountain lion lunged and swiped at her, scratching Wilson’s left shoulder through her jacket, she said. “I yelled ‘Eva!’ and she came running,” Wilson said. “And she hit that cat really hard.” The dog weighs 55 pounds and was outclassed by the cougar but battled fiercely. Live updates | Report: Turkey lists Sweden, Finland demands
By The Associated Press ANKARA, Turkey — A pro-government Turkish newspaper says Turkey has drawn up a list of 10 demands it will reportedly ask Sweden and Finland to meet before it can approve their NATO membership. The list published by Sabah newspaper on Wednesday calls on the two countries to stop any financial support to groups linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as well as to Syrian Kurdish fighters whom Ankara views as extensions of the banned group. There are also demands that these countries halt contacts with members of the Syrian Kurdish group. Sabah said Turkey furthermore wants the two countries to “expedite” extradition proceedings for suspects wanted by Turkey on terror charges. The list also includes a demand that Sweden clamps down on what Sabah called a “disinformation” campaign against Turkey led by followers of Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara claims was behind a coup attempt in 2016.
