Serena Williams’ retirement keeps her from elusive Grand Slam record

August 9, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Tennis star Serena Williams said in a Tuesday Vogue article that she plans on retiring from the sport after this year's U.S. Open, which begins August 29. The U.S. Open is the final Grand Slam tournament of 2022. Williams currently holds 23 singles Grand Slam titles, second only to Margaret Court, who has 24. Should Williams win the U.S. Open, she would share the record with Court, but she cannot overtake the International Tennis Hall of Famer if she sticks to her current retirement plan. In Vogue 's as-told-to cover story, Williams said she has "never liked the word retirement " and added she is "evolving away from tennis." She also indicated she plans to focus on Serena Ventures, her venture capital firm, as well as expanding her family . Of the U.S. Open being her last tournament, she wrote on Instagram that "[t]he countdown has begun" and that she's "gonna relish these next few weeks." Many tennis experts already rank Williams ahead of Court on lists of the … [Read more...] about Serena Williams’ retirement keeps her from elusive Grand Slam record

Kate Middleton’s uncle says Cambridges have “hands full” with Windsor move

August 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Prince William and Kate Middleton 's potential move to a cottage on Queen Elizabeth II 's Windsor Castle estate will see them have their "hands full" over the summer, according to the duchess' uncle. Gary Goldsmith , Kate's maternal uncle who has become the most outspoken member of her close-knit family, has told British tabloid newspaper The Sun that the move will bring with it a new chapter for the Cambridges. "William and Kate are going to have their hands full this summer as they move home to be nearer the Queen and settle the kids into a new school," he said. "But I think they are ready for the next chapter in their lives." Though a move to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Great Park for William and Kate has been speculated on for a number of months, there has been no official statement from either Kensington or Buckingham Palace to confirm this. In June, a senior palace source said that a firm decision had yet to be made by the couple: "We're obviously aware that … [Read more...] about Kate Middleton’s uncle says Cambridges have “hands full” with Windsor move

Not Even Tom Cruise Can Save ‘Oblivion’

April 18, 2013 by www.theatlantic.com

This article is from the archive of our partner . The score for Oblivion , written by French electronic band M83, pulses and swells beautifully throughout Joseph Kosinski's film, crescendoing to thundering Hans Zimmer heights (with perhaps a little too much of his Inception bwaammmp sound) and softening into Michael Giacchino-esque plaintive piano plinking. It's a terrific score, propulsive and moody, and Kosinski showed good taste in hiring the band — just as he did when he commissioned Daft Punk to score his Tron: Legacy . He also smartly reteamed with his Tron cinematographer Claudio Miranda, who recently won an Oscar for working miracles in Life of Pi . Oblivion is sleek and gorgeous, smooth and matte-finish, full of watery grays and cool blues. And the film's digital effects — giving us a broken moon and the windswept barren expanse of an Earth gone to seed — are employed with a subtle and particular hand. What I'm saying is that the movie looks and sounds great. … [Read more...] about Not Even Tom Cruise Can Save ‘Oblivion’

Queen’s traditional Balmoral welcome scaled back amid mobility problems

August 9, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Queen Elizabeth II's traditional welcome ceremony held each year when she takes up residence at her Balmoral Scottish castle for the summer has been scaled back in another example of established traditions being altered because of the 96-year-old monarch's advanced age and health issues. The queen has been in residence on her Scottish estate since late July, where she has been staying at Craigowan Lodge—a small country house built by Queen Victoria—while Balmoral Castle was open to the public. When the castle closes to the public in August each year, the queen takes up official residence and she receives a steady stream of guests including family members and a traditional visit from the prime minister. The monarch usually stays at Balmoral until the fall, returning in late September or early October. Each year, to mark the queen's moving into the castle, an official guard of honor is formed outside the estate gates from an armed forces regiment. The queen traditionally has … [Read more...] about Queen’s traditional Balmoral welcome scaled back amid mobility problems
