The Senior Open golf tournament at The Broadmoor boosted Colorado Springs hotels to their second-best month in 22 years, says the Rocky Mountain Lodging Report. The 90.7 percent occupancy rate trails a 91.3 percent rate in July 2016 as the second best since since August 1996, when hotels filled 92.5 percent of capacity as a construction boom was adding 3,000 hotel rooms to the market. The July 2016 rate was helped by a lacrosse tournament that filled 2,500 rooms over two weekends; the tournament moved to Aurora last year. The occupancy rate for the first half of the year rose to 70 percent from 67.5 percent during the first six months of last year.“This really shows the power of events” to fill rooms, said Doug Price, CEO of the Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We’ve known since the 2008 Senior Open that this tournament has a huge impact on our community — $30 million in economic impact — and that is reflected in both the occupancy … [Read more...] about Senior Open boosts Colorado Springs hotels to second-best month in 22 years

0 View Comments The Broadmoor hotel hopes to complete a study of the Pikes Peak Cog Railway within three months as it determines whether the now-shuttered attraction can or should be rebuilt. Broadmoor President and CEO Jack Damioli said he met Wednesday with "several" governmental agencies as part of the hotel's research on what to do with the railway. Participants in the meeting weren't identified, but the Manitou Springs mayor, and representatives of the city of Colorado Springs, El Paso County and The Convention and Visitors Bureau said they have met with the Broadmoor recently. More such meetings are likely, Damioli said. "I'm not going to get into the details, but we're talking with all the stakeholders on how we could potentially work together to make this work," Damioli said. "It's a very complex and expensive project. And so with that, we're trying to walk through all those things and make sure that we are communicating and that we're talking with our stakeholders." … [Read more...] about Broadmoor meets with Colorado Springs-area officials as it studies Cog Railway

In one of the Colorado Springs area’s biggest hotel development booms in decades, 20 projects with more than 2,200 rooms are opening in the next few months, under construction or on the drawing board with groundbreaking dates, according to a Gazette analysis of the proposals. The projects stretch from downtown Colorado Springs, to the city’s fast-growing north and northeast sides, to Cripple Creek and Teller County. Why so many? Local hotel developers, as well as several out-of-state investors and management companies, are finding a lot to like these days about Colorado Springs, industry experts say. The area’s hotel occupancy rate of nearly 70 percent in 2017 was the highest in two decades, even though it was unchanged from the previous year. When demand ramps up, hoteliers can boost room rates, which jumped last year by a little more than 7 percent on a year-over-year … [Read more...] about Colorado Springs in the midst of a hotel building boom.
