ANAHEIM, Calif. — The move away from placing predominantly Latino and Black community college students in remedial college classes and instead enrolling them in regular classes is seeing substantial results in California, with a boost in the course and graduation requirement completion. Fullerton College, a school that is more than half Latino , has a 100 percent campuswide enrollment rate for regular, transfer-level English courses. They’ve seen a campuswide English success rate of 72.65 percent for all students and 69.29 percent for Latino students. “This is our goal and eventually I hope that all the colleges see that this is possible — that we are not an outlier,” José Ramón Núñez, vice president of instruction at Fullerton College, said. Fullerton College is one of the schools that is being recognized for supporting 100 percent Latino student enrollment in transfer-level English and math courses by The Campaign for College Opportunity , a statewide coalition that … [Read more...] about This state is enrolling fewer Latino and Black college students in remedial courses. Don’t Stop Using the Term ‘Cancel Culture’
Few terms have been as abused as “cancel culture.” Its very existence is a point of controversy, despite the fact that large majorities both on and off campus feel pressured to censor themselves for fear of losing their jobs or reputations. But it’s a real thing—no matter how many ways its meaning has been wrongly distorted. On March 3, Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russian foreign intelligence, accused the West of attempting to “cancel” their government for its invasion of Ukraine, echoing claims made by Vladimir Putin about alleged American cancel culture. Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the allegations of sexual harassment and a toxic workplace that led to his resignation were cancel culture. And, of course, former President Donald Trump has blamed cancel culture for just about everything — including the Jan. 6 committee’s decision to subpoena Roger Stone and Alex Jones. Ridiculous non-examples of cancel culture, such as these, provide all the ammunition … [Read more...] about Don’t Stop Using the Term ‘Cancel Culture’
Five key takeaways from primary election results
Progressive Democrats had a good night on Tuesday as five states held primary contests for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, while a key Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania remains extremely close. Candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump had a mixed night and the final outcomes of some key races are not yet known. However, there is also the real possibility that a Democratic congressman who was endorsed by President Joe Biden could end up losing his primary to a progressive challenger and that a Trump-backed Senate candidate could be defeated. Here are five key takeaways from Tuesday's elections. 1. Trump's Support Not Enough to Save Cawthorn Republican Representative Madison Cawthorn conceded defeat in the GOP primary for North Carolina's 11th congressional district after losing to state Senator Chuck Edwards in what may be the biggest upset of the primary season so far. Delicate limb lengthening surgery performed in Visakhapatnam hospital
A young man, who has spent about 20 years of his life walking with difficulty due to a 2.5 cm variation between his right and left legs, is relieved now. Doctors at Apollo Hospital, Visakhapatnam, have corrected the deformity through a limb lengthening surgery. His parents, who hail from Himachal Pradesh, had settled at Rayagada in Odisha. The boy had a defect in his right leg, since birth. His parents ignored the problem, perhaps, due to fear that surgery could make even the other leg worse. The boy went through school and college and is now a techie in Pune. “The bone is fractured in controlled conditions and is elongated and allowed to heal. The bone can be elongated up to 6 cm without any complications. Chennai’s young restaurateurs celebrate street food and home-style meals
In a plush, tree-lined bylane of Alwarpet, in a neighbourhood accustomed to buttery croissants and French- pressed coffee, sits a little corner mess where you can have unlimited portions of rice, dried fish sambal, meen kuzhambu, chicken curry, rasam, sambar, kootu and poriyal for just ₹160. At lunch on a heat-stricken weekday, all five tables under a quietly humming AC are full. “It is heartening to see walk-ins from every demographic: from security guards to executives in huge SUVs,” says 30-year-old Vikram Reddy, one of the four entrepreneurs behind Kaaram Karaikudi Mess. He pauses mid-conversation to bid adieu to an elderly guest with a cane, being helped out gently by a young companion — the duo has been a regular ever since the two-week-old restaurant opened. Repeat customers — and the patronage of established chefs and some celebrities — are Vikram’s proof that he was right in his basic business premise: “Everyone misses simple traditional food, and wants to eat it in … [Read more...] about Chennai’s young restaurateurs celebrate street food and home-style meals

Golf-Masters champ Scheffler hungry as ever at PGA Championship
(Reuters) - Masters champion Scottie Scheffler said on Tuesday that despite figuring out a winning formula that has produced one of the best runs in recent memory, he remains as hungry as ever going into this week's PGA Championship. "Winning the Masters is a huge honour for me and we've definitely been able to enjoy that a little bit," Scheffler said at his pre-tournament news conference. "After a little while, it's kind of back to business and so I've been preparing and getting ready for this week."
