Matt Charboneau The Detroit News Published 12:22 PM EST Nov 25, 2018 Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News predicts bowl destinations for Big Ten teams: Ohio State (11-1) College Football Playoff, Orange Bowl, Dec. 29, Miami (time TBD, ESPN) After the way the Buckeyes lit up the No. 1 defense in the nation, it would be hard not to see Ohio State getting the nod over Oklahoma. That would be the likely choice the committee will be making if the teams win their conference championship games and Alabama or Clemson don’t slip up in theirs. Here’s betting the Buckeyes get the nod. Michigan (10-2) Rose Bowl, Jan. 1, Pasadena, Calif. (5 p.m., ESPN) With Ohio State getting into the playoff field, that paves the way for the Wolverines to make their first trip to Pasadena since 2007. They’d be the easy choice over West champion Northwestern. If Ohio State ends up in the Rose Bowl, Michigan could land at the Peach or Fiesta Bowl. Nick Baumgardner Detroit Free Press Published 6:31 AM EST Nov 16, 2018 The game before The Game has arrived. Also, basketball season is here, as evidenced by Michigan's road thrashing of Villanova on Wednesday. All that and more in this week's mailbag. Q: (Michigan was) in the driver's seat in 2016 and dropped (three of our last four) games. What makes you think this team is different than that team? — @Garbo824 A: A fine question and one I've thought about. The answer is that this Michigan team already has gotten its lesson in what happens when you're not prepared to handle adversity: The Notre Dame game. More: Michigan football vs. Indiana: Scouting report, prediction The 2016 team wasn't put in any difficult situations, really, until the 10th game of the year. Michigan had challenging games vs. Colorado and Wisconsin early, but those were home games. They played away against a bad Michigan State team. Matt Charboneau The Detroit News Published 11:11 PM EDT Oct 27, 2018 With roughly a month to go in the regular season, the prognosticating for the College Football Playoff will be hitting a fever pitch over the next several weeks. But before anyone in the Big Ten can start making travel plans, the matter of deciding the division champions to see who plays for the conference title in Indianapolis will need to be settled. And after Saturday’s game, almost nothing is certain. Big games still await the leaders in the East while over in the West, Northwestern has the leg up but has hardly clinched anything other than crippling Wisconsin’s chances with a two-touchdown win over the Badgers on Saturday. There wasn’t much movement to be made this weekend in the East as Michigan and Ohio State were off. The Wolverines are on top at 5-0 while the Buckeyes are 4-1 after the loss last week at Purdue. But with the teams facing off in the regular-season finale, the … [Read more...] about Big Ten football race: Michigan Wolverines, Northwestern Wildcats have inside track but much can change
Kirkland Crawford Detroit Free Press Published 6:38 p.m. UTC Aug 15, 2018 The college football season is close (we promise). Among the sports websites that can hardly contain themselves is CBSSports.com. The writers there tried to pick the best team in each state in Division I. The criteria wasn't so much projection for this season as it was "head-to-head wins and other recent accomplishments." There are some compelling arguments across the country, especially in places like Florida, Tennessee and Texas. With apologies to the Mid-American Conference directional schools, this debate for this state comes down to two teams: Michigan and Michigan State. Considering one team is 8-2 in its last 10 against the other, and that same team has won the Big Ten three times since 2010, the choice is simple. And CBSSports.com agrees. It's Michigan State. This, according to Ben Kercheval: "It's been clear-cut for several years now. Michigan State has owned its … [Read more...] about Michigan State clearly the best football team in Michigan, writer says
