So whether they are actively recruiting these low-income students for reasons of open-the-door altruism or keep-the-lights-on capitalism — or, more likely, some combination of the two — there has been a huge, largely hidden byproduct of this dramatic increase in access: These students are often being loaded up with staggering debt that is completely out of whack with the earnings boost they’ll likely get from a degree at a nonselective or less selective college. Already, average student loan debt is higher in Boston than any other metro area in the country, 44 percent above the national average, according to Credit Karma. But more troubling, many of these low-income students — and, at some colleges, most of them — are not graduating. That means these non-completers are leaving campus saddled with lots of debt but none of the salary gains that traditionally come with a bachelor’s degree. Bernie Sanders, progressives unveil bill to cancel student debt
Share Tweet Email Politics Share: Share Tweet Email Share: Share Tweet Email AP By WASHINGTON -- Days before the first Democratic presidential debates, Sen. Bernie Sanders and House progressives are unveiling legislation canceling all student debt, going further than a signature proposal by Sen. Elizabeth Warren as the two jockey for support from the party's liberal base.By canceling all student loans, Sanders says the proposal addresses an economic burden for 45 million Americans. The key difference is that Warren's plan considers the income of the borrowers, canceling $50,000 in debt for those earning less than $100,000 per year and affecting an estimated 42 million people in the U.S.Questions face both candidates about how to pay for all of that plus their proposals for free tuition at public colleges and universities. Trump Education Secretary Pick Sure Doesn’t Seem Willing to Enforce Laws Against Fake Colleges
Betsy DeVos’ confirmation hearing yesterday, you have probably already heard the highlights. Ms. DeVos is woefully unprepared to lead the Department of Education; she is neither an expert in, nor a proponent of public education in general. Department of Education flags 5 law schools’ debt-to-income ratios, including 3 in Infilaw System
Two for-profit law schools are not meeting the U.S. Department of Education’s gainful employment standard, which measures debt-to-earnings ratios, the agency reported Monday. If Florida Coastal School of Law and Charleston School of Law fail the gainful employment standard again next year, they lose access to federal student aid, the National Law Journal reports. The Infilaw System owns Florida Coastal. Two of its other law schools, Charlotte School of Law and Arizona Summit Law School, were given a “zone” rating by the Department of Education, which means the schools were close to not meeting gainful employment standards, and must pass the gainful employment standard in one of the next four years to stay in good standing.Federal student aid for Charlotte School of Law students is already in jeopardy, after the department in December found that the school made “substantial misrepresentations” to current and prospective students regarding its compliance with … [Read more...] about Department of Education flags 5 law schools’ debt-to-income ratios, including 3 in Infilaw System
