Brits are set to be battered by three days of thunderstorms, heavy rain and gale force winds as a “revved up jet stream” brings in the storms from the Atlantic. Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: “Three days or so of rain, showers and a keen breeze especially on Wednesday and Thursday before the weather settles down for the weekend.” Looking at today, Mr McGivern said that there will be “lively showers” up and down the country. “Quite widely by mid-morning showers popping up just about anywhere and they will be lively in places, particularly in the south there will be hail and thunder where these showers occur,” he said. The unsettled weather is coming from the Atlantic jetstream ( Image: WXCharts) “A keen breeze in the North East making it feel cool but further south, lighter winds, temperatures around … [Read more...] about UK weather forecast: Thundery showers and gales for ‘three days due to jet stream’

Russia-Ukraine live updates | Stop playing with Russia, end war: Zelensky tells West
Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the West to stop playing around with Russia and impose tougher sanctions on Moscow to end its "senseless war" in Ukraine, adding his country would remain independent, the only question was at what price. Mr. Zelensky's criticism of the West has mounted in recent days as the European Union moves slowly towards a possible Russian oil embargo and as thousands of Russian forces try to encircle two key eastern cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk. Meanwhile, United States officials say the Biden administration is aiming to lead the international bloc opposed to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine into a broader coalition to counter what it sees as a more serious, long-term threat to global order from China. Her daughter was shot on live TV. Now she’s marching to demand gun control
Alison Parker had a close relationship with her mom. On Mother's Day in 2015, she took both of her parents wine-tasting and hiking around the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. And every Monday, she met her mom after her morning shift ended at the local news station to share lunch and do some shopping. "Those are the things I miss," Barbara Parker tells Newsweek . The world watched in horror when Alison, a 24-year-old reporter, was fatally shot on live TV on August 26, 2015, along with her colleague Adam Ward, a 27-year-old photojournalist, both with WDBJ7. The two were conducting a live interview at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, Virginia, when a gunman approached and killed them. The suspect, later identified as a former employee at their Roanoke news station, fatally shot himself before police could apprehend him. Much of the aftermath of the shooting played out on social media, as the suspect posted video footage and updates to Twitter as he fled. "For lack of better words, … [Read more...] about Her daughter was shot on live TV. Now she’s marching to demand gun control
Viral tweet of Ted Cruz using template for all mass shootings debunked
A viral tweet that claims to show Senator Ted Cruz using a template to identically respond to mass shootings in the U.S. has been debunked by a CNN reporter. The tweet in question contains an image that appears to show 12 tweets from the Texas Republican using the same language to react to mass shootings, changing only the name of the location where they occur. "These mass shootings happen so much that Ted Cruz really got a template ready to tweet whenever they occur," Twitter user @1DOPEKEV wrote. Responding to the tweet, CNN reporter Daniel Dale, who fact checks political claims wrote Thursday: "This viral tweet is filled with phony images of stuff Ted Cruz didn't actually tweet. The pictured Cruz tweet about the Uvalde shooting is real, but the rest of the images are fake. I added Xs over the phony ones." Cruz's tweet immediately reacting to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that claimed the lives of 21 people including 19 children at Robb Elementary School on … [Read more...] about Viral tweet of Ted Cruz using template for all mass shootings debunked
UK weather forecast: Heavy rain and wind with temperatures dropping by 10C
Patchy rain will strike much of the UK today with no chance of prolonged sunshine until the weekend, according to the Met Office . Temperatures today could be 10C lower than those enjoyed by some yesterday. Charts show the temperatures plummet, as Brits kiss goodbye Sunday's mini heatwave. Brits have basked in warm sunshine over the last few days, with highs of 24C recorded in London and the south-east on Sunday. But from today that weather is no more - with blustery conditions expected due to a strengthening jet stream that is making the weather more erratic. UK weather forecast: Jubilee weekend in jeopardy as rain moves to ‘all areas’ next week
Brits looking forward to an extended Bank Holiday weekend for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee may be faced with a washout and colder temperatures. The Met Office forecast predicting the weather next week does say there is a possibility of sunshine if a high pressure is dominant to the west of the country, coming in from the Atlantic, as it is still early to be sure what will happen. But if a low pressure over the Azores comes closer, then it is likely to bring showers for the whole country with Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern calling it a "loose cannon". The UK will enjoy a four-day Bank Holiday weekend beginning on Thursday June 2 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne. Events are being planned up and down the country for the historic occasion. The uncertainty is over a low pressure system around the Azores ( Image: WX Charts) Mr McGivern said that colder and rainy weather will start moving in from Sunday and then it will be quite unsettled … [Read more...] about UK weather forecast: Jubilee weekend in jeopardy as rain moves to ‘all areas’ next week
‘Jamie Oliver should try to force prices down, not lecture struggling families’
Jamie Oliver ’s heart is clearly in the right place but his antennae for reality would appear to need a service. The celebrity chef led a march on Downing Street last Friday to protest against a government decision to delay banning buy-one-get-one-free (BOGOF) offers on fattening junk food. So far, so fair enough. Trouble is, timing is everything and during a cost of living crisis the last thing the kind of people struggling to eat want to hear is a celebrity chef with a small fortune who doesn’t want for very much telling them how they should eat. For those people, a BOGOF meal eases the pressure on their finances and is, perhaps, a lunch meal on a day when they otherwise wouldn’t eat. So it really is no surprise he is suffering a backlash. Oliver strikes you as a down-to-earth sort with a grasp on the way real people live. The lending of his voice has helped to force child obesity to the top of the government agenda. The chef protested after the government dropped an … [Read more...] about ‘Jamie Oliver should try to force prices down, not lecture struggling families’
Daughter of woman stabbed 70 times ‘will never get the chance to know her mum’
The grieving daughter of a woman stabbed to death 70 times by her partner in a frenzied, drug-fuelled attack says she has been robbed of a chance to get to know her mum. Simone Ambler, 49, was found dead following an argument with her partner Donald Payne, 62, on March 29 last year. Payne stabbed Simone 70 times before calling 999 for an ambulance - telling the operator he had stabbed her 'a couple of times'. When police and paramedics arrived, they were met with a devastating scene. Simone was fatally wounded and Payne was sitting in an armchair, his hands, feet and jeans covered in blood. On the arm of the chair lay the knife he had used to kill her. Mum-of-two Simone was pronounced dead at the scene. Payne was arrested on suspicion of murder but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility, Lancashire Live reports. But as the killer began his life sentence, Simone's daughter Lauren Turner spoke of her sadness she would never spend any … [Read more...] about Daughter of woman stabbed 70 times ‘will never get the chance to know her mum’
