The U.S. and China want influence in the Pacific. Here’s how to earn it | Opinion
Vice President Kamala Harris recently announced a hefty new package to boost U.S. relations with the Pacific Islands—including plans to open three embassies, develop a comprehensive U.S. strategy for the region, and increase current funding to $600 million over the next decade. The announcement, delivered during a gathering of Pacific Island leaders, comes on the heels of a series of surprise meetings between Beijing and island officials that have left the U.S. worried . At a time when most foreign affairs coverage centers on Russia's war in Ukraine or President Joe Biden 's talks with Saudi Arabia, the Pacific is quietly and quickly emerging as a critical frontier for the next diplomatic tug-of-war between great powers. Both the U.S. and China have awakened to the economic and military potential of the strategically positioned islands—a potential long obscured by the islands' small size. This awakening is made apparent by Vice President Harris' promise to island … [Read more...] about The U.S. and China want influence in the Pacific. Here’s how to earn it | Opinion
Why Lake Mead water levels are rising again
Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S., has made national headlines recently due to its rapidly declining water levels. The reservoir across Nevada and Arizona is formed by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, and provides electricity for hundreds of thousands of people living across the area. Due to the ongoing drought in the western United States, it has been hurtling towards dead pool level —which could be catastrophic. However, its water levels have now risen for the first time in three years. On July 27, the lake's water levels were at 1,040.71 feet—the lowest it has been since the 1930s, not long after it was first created. The area was then hit by the wettest monsoon season the Las Vegas Valley has seen in a decade. From July 27, rain was falling every day, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported. As of August 15, the lake's levels were at 1,042.29 feet, meaning water levels rose by 18 inches. Some areas saw more than a half inch of rain in just 10 minutes, … [Read more...] about Why Lake Mead water levels are rising again
The 13 states to fall into U.S. extreme heat belt in next 30 years
Experts have predicted that an " extreme heat belt " will settle over the U.S. by the middle of this century. Nonprofit group First Street Foundation has modeled how the intensity of heatwaves will change across the country over the coming years. Key findings from its report indicate that millions of people will be affected by extreme heat in the next few decades, and these effects will be worse in the landlocked states. The "extreme heat belt", as dubbed by the researchers, will span 13 states across the South and Midwest , from parts of Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana through Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky and Illinois, and the borders of Nebraska. Other states affected outside of this cluster will be California, Arizona, Nevada, as well as Florida and the Carolinas on the East Coast. In 2023, the model finds that 50 counties, home to over 8 million people, will experience temperatures over 125F, which is the highest level of … [Read more...] about The 13 states to fall into U.S. extreme heat belt in next 30 years
Real-life Willy Wonka auctions antique candy store memorabilia
A real-life Willy Wonka who ran the "best sweet shop in the world" is selling his entire collection of 1940s-style goodies. Englishman Dave Walker, 50, spent a lifetime scouring flea markets and antique fairs before opening the Edward & Vintage candy store. The time-warp store had an original Victorian-style counter, Bakelite measuring scales, cabinets from English chocolate giants Cadbury's, a 100-year-old cash register, candy jars, scoops, packets of sugar from the 1940s, old bicycles, enamel signs, and a bar of 1920s Bournville chocolate. The candy store attracted thousands of visitors after it opened in the picturesque Derbyshire village of Tissington in central England, in the U.K., in 2012 and was quickly dubbed the "best sweet shop in the world." The store has featured in a number of British TV shows, including Escape to the Country , Country File , The Great Interior Design Challenge as well as on Germany's Ard TV. John Fetterman fundraises off Dr.Oz’s ad—”Let them eat crudité”
Pennsylvania Lt. Governor John Fetterman is now fundraising for his U.S. Senate race using a video by his Republican opponent and celebrity surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz . Fetterman, a Democrat, began offering a "limited edition sticker" mocking one of Oz's videos to those who contributed to his Senate campaign on Twitter late on Monday. The new fundraising effort comes after an Oz campaign video from earlier this year became the focus of renewed attention on Monday . In that video, Oz appeared to mix up the names of grocery chains Radner's and Wegmans and said that he was shopping at "Wegners." Oz, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump , also mentioned shopping for crudités—a plate of vegetables often served with sauces—during the campaign video, eliciting ridicule from Fetterman. "To honor Dr. Oz's love for crudités and Wegners (and also because it's my birthday) we're launching this NEW limited edition sticker," Fetterman tweeted . "Make a donation of any … [Read more...] about John Fetterman fundraises off Dr.Oz’s ad—”Let them eat crudité”

Europe Drought: German Industry at Risk as Rhine Falls
Germany’s main industry lobby group warned Tuesday that factories may have to throttle production or halt it completely because plunging water levels on the Rhine River are making it harder to transport cargo. Water levels on the Rhine at Emmerich, near the Dutch border, dropped by a further four centimeters (1.6 inches) in 24 hours, hitting zero on the depth gauge. Authorities say the shipping lane itself still has a depth of almost 200 centimeters (six feet, six inches), but the record low measurement Tuesday morning highlights the extreme lack of water caused by months of drought affecting much of Europe. “The ongoing drought and the low water levels threaten the supply security of industry,” said Holger Loesch, deputy head of the business lobby group BDI. Loesch said shifting cargo from river to train or transport was difficult because of limited rail capacity and a lack of drivers. “It’s only a question of time before facilities in the chemical and steel industry have to … [Read more...] about Europe Drought: German Industry at Risk as Rhine Falls
