This article is from the archive of our partner . The score for Oblivion , written by French electronic band M83, pulses and swells beautifully throughout Joseph Kosinski's film, crescendoing to thundering Hans Zimmer heights (with perhaps a little too much of his Inception bwaammmp sound) and softening into Michael Giacchino-esque plaintive piano plinking. It's a terrific score, propulsive and moody, and Kosinski showed good taste in hiring the band — just as he did when he commissioned Daft Punk to score his Tron: Legacy . He also smartly reteamed with his Tron cinematographer Claudio Miranda, who recently won an Oscar for working miracles in Life of Pi . Oblivion is sleek and gorgeous, smooth and matte-finish, full of watery grays and cool blues. And the film's digital effects — giving us a broken moon and the windswept barren expanse of an Earth gone to seed — are employed with a subtle and particular hand. What I'm saying is that the movie looks and sounds great. … [Read more...] about Not Even Tom Cruise Can Save ‘Oblivion’

Wales 12-26 Argentina: Second-half rush from visitors condemns Wales to fourth-straight loss
Wales' hopes of securing a top-four seeding in the 2015 World Cup nosedived after Argentina stunned them at the Millennium Stadium. Eleven years to the day following Argentina's only previous victory over Wales in Cardiff, second-half tries from wings Juan Imhoff and Gonzalo Camacho left the reigning RBS 6 Nations champions reeling. And to make matters worse, Wales also suffered a double injury blow when centre Jamie Roberts and lock Alun-Wyn Jones departed inside the opening 40 minutes. Full-back Leigh Halfpenny kicked all Wales' points, but they were outplayed by a Pumas team battle-hardened from recent home and away appointments with New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in the southern hemisphere's inaugural Rugby Championship. Fly-half Nicolas Sanchez weighed in with two drop-goals, two conversions and a penalty, while veteran centre Felipe Contepomi kicked a penalty before he was forced off injured after just 10 minutes. Wales' interim head coach Rob Howley - in … [Read more...] about Wales 12-26 Argentina: Second-half rush from visitors condemns Wales to fourth-straight loss
Democrats prepare for battle beyond Election Day
As the late-summer turned to fall, Democratic groups were planning for all eventualities, including a contested election—and that was before President Donald Trump chilled his opposition across the country by refusing to commit to a peaceful transfer of power. Now they're digging in, aware that the president's actions on Election Day and beyond are unpredictable. Trump stunned the White House briefing room, if not the entire country, with one statement on Wednesday. "There won't be a transfer, frankly," he said. "There will be a continuation." His comments drew immediate rebukes from Democrats across the country. "We cannot and will not let Donald Trump go unchecked as he continues to threaten our democracy," said Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, co-Chairs of the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA), in a joint statement. "Democratic AGs know how to take Trump to court and win. We are more than prepared to do so … [Read more...] about Democrats prepare for battle beyond Election Day
Premier League: Erik ten Hag Era at Manchester United Starts with Defeat to Brighton
Erik ten Hag’s reign as Manchester United manager got off to a nightmare start as Brighton registered their first ever victory at Old Trafford with a 2-1 win on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Any hope of a fresh start for United after a miserable 2021/22 season was wiped away within 45 minutes as Pascal Gross struck twice to put Brighton in command. Alexis Mac Allister’s own goal gave United a foothold in the game, but they rarely looked like getting back on level terms, showing the scale of the task lying ahead for Ten Hag. Britney Spears accuses mom of abuse after Lynne shares texts
Britney Spears has accused her mother of abuse as the pop star's family drama is reigniting on social media this week. The pop star s hared and swiftly deleted two posts in the early hours of Monday morning, one of which featured an alleged text exchange with her mother Lynne Spears during a 2019 stay at a mental health facility. In screenshots of a text conversation posted by Spears, the 40-year-old expressed her concerns over the dosages she was being given of antipsychotic drug Seroquel, which is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. "I feel like he's trying to kill me," Spears said during that exchange, which she said went unanswered. During explosive court testimony in June 2020, Spears stated that she was made to take mood stabilizer lithium while she was under the conservatorship, which had seen her personal and financial decisions taken out of her hands since 2008. The pop icon's court-ordered arrangement was eventually brought to an end on November … [Read more...] about Britney Spears accuses mom of abuse after Lynne shares texts
Josh Donaldson starting to find his groove at the plate to go along with his stellar defense
SEATTLE — Josh Donaldson was the spark the Yankees needed Monday night. After losing five straight and being swept in St. Louis, the veteran third baseman gave the Bombers three runs early to get their offense going against the Mariners on Monday and hopefully turn around a month-long skid. And the Yankees have to hope that this run can turn around what has been a disappointing start to Donaldson’s Yankee career. Donaldson’s two-run single in the first inning against Logan Gilbert got things started and then he homered off the Mariners’ right-handed starter in the third. He finished with a season-high four-hit night, including two doubles and his 11th home run of the season. “I feel like that run is in there for JD,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “And if he can get going like we know he’s capable of, that’s a big, heavy bat in the middle. And we need it.” The Bombers haven’t seen it for most of the season. After acquiring Donaldson — and the $50 million left on his … [Read more...] about Josh Donaldson starting to find his groove at the plate to go along with his stellar defense
Middle aged who can’t stand on one leg easily for 10 seconds more likely to die young
People over 50 who are unable to stand on one leg for 10 seconds are at double the risk of dying in the next decade, a study found. Researchers believe the “flamingo test” may be an indicator of general health that helps predict those who will live well into old age. The global study team, including experts from Bristol Medical School , tracked 1,702 participants, aged 51 to 75, from Brazil between 2009 and 2020. They were asked to place the front of the lifted foot on the back of the opposite lower leg, keeping their arms by their sides and their gaze fixed straight ahead. Some 17.5% of those who failed died in the study period, compared to 4.5% who passed the balance test.
