HOL firms cheat fliers out of millions in delay compo while paying others on the same plane, a Sun probe shows. Passengers held up for more than three hours can get up to £520 under EU laws. But firms use loopholes to snub some claims — by blaming lateness on factors such as bad weather. Andy Hughes, 38, got £1,068 after he, wife Karen, 33, and son Jack, five, had a 24-hour delay on a TUI Luton-Lanzarote trip. Yet TUI snubbed his claim for in-laws Janet and Terrence Warburton — on the same flight — citing poor weather. Armed forces worker Andy, of Maidenhead, Berks, said: “Did TUI think they could fob them off as they’re in their 60s? "I went to a claims dispute service and won.” Yet law firm Bott & Co told her it got payouts for 11 fellow travellers. Opinion If your flight is delayed, you may be entitled to compensation. James Walker explains when you can claim. Archant There are lots of situations in life that we dread. Making small talk with strangers is enough to push many people over the edge. The thought of being stuck in a lift with James Blunt playing over the tannoy on repeat chills me to the bone. But one situation that makes us all despair is being stuck in an airport when your flight is delayed. The only silver lining on that particular cloud is the fact that you may be able to claim compensation if your flight is delayed over three hours. Not only that, but you can go back to claim for delays up to six years ago – so check your email inboxes for those old confirmation details. In a turn-up for the books, the European Courts of Justice (ECJ) has ruled on a court case that means you can now claim if you’re delayed over three hours as a result of a connection delay outside of the EU too. HUNDREDS of passengers claim to have been left stranded without food or water for at least seven hours following severe airport delays today. Flights were cancelled from UK airports last night after Birmingham Airport was forced to shut its runway when a plane made an emergency landing. The Norwegian Air flight was travelling from Reykjavik to Madrid when a “hydraulic issue” forced the pilot to land in the West Midlands. The closure has caused long delays for travellers today and TUI customers are furious after being "stranded" on their own. Customers took to Twitter to complain after flights were cancelled at the last minute. Flights travelling from Manchester, Rhodes, Fuerteventura, Birmingham and Kos have been affected. Some passengers said there were not offered accommodation or water and are demanding compensation. TUI, however, apologised for any inconvenience caused and said every passenger affected by the delays was offered accommodation last night.
